"Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita...", 3

Bartolomeo had failed to catch the angel, who had instead retaliated, hard enough that- were he mortal- he might have began nosebleeding. What he did know was, his head hurt enough, and he hadn't even had the satisfaction of making that demon pay for it, which made him all the more pissed off.
Pissed off enough in fact that he had not said a word as he followed Cassiel. In his mind the only thought was to find the demon and let it- he refused to use anything more than "it" for that entity- pay for what it did.

He was just waiting for the right chance. As soon as it would present itself, he would go in and slice that demon to pieces himself. The chest and the mission came after that, for him, now. The hands still holding the scythe seemed to tighten their grip, and so he waited.

Cassiel scratched his chin. "Dominions...how did they get their hands on heavenly equipment?", he wondered out loud. Then he sighed. "Well, we can't ignore it now. We have to find out what they planned to do with it and who is supposed to get it."

He looked at the others. "Alright, this is how we do this. Sage, I want you to go with Lux, Gakusha, Bartolomeo, Emile and Tamara and go around the side. Get inside and try to figure out how many of them there are. Take out guards if you can, but only if you can do so silently.", he explained to the girl. "Do not engage, until I give the order. Me and the rest will start the assault, when the time is right. Once they focus on us, you attack them from behind."

"They will try to scatter. Try to take them alive and do not let them get away with the equipment."

He looked at them sternly, but then patted each of them on the shoulder. "Listen to Sage and keep together. We succeed as a team and only then. Now go!"

With that, the host split and Sage's team made their way back down the stairs and on to the streets. The decrepit building was just behind them. From the outside it almost looked like nothing was going on. A homeless man leaned against a nearby wall, unaware of the activities so close to him.

Lux

Lux nodded at Cassiel's order. "I won't fail you, sir." With that, he followed Sage down the stairs and onto the streets. Okay...what now? Going in guns blazing was definitely a bad idea, but they didn't even know the layout of the building, and that sounded like a good way to get ambushed. Unless...

Lux knelt down and picked up some of the glass and steel lying on the ground. Muttering something under his breath, he carefully snapped and bended and flattened the materials, his hands softly glowing as his Virtue activated, until after several minutes, he stood up wearing some sort of steel glove, with mirrored glass attached to the outside.

Just in case we're ambushed. Then, he followed the group to...wherever they were going.

"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."

Sage

"Alright y'all, follow me," Sage whispered hoarsely, waving them forward. "All clear, now!"

They rounded the corners of the building and Sage held up a hand for them to wait. She waved them forward when she realized it was still all clear.

"Imma look in the windows to see if there's any guards in there," she explained. "The rest of y'all keep watch. Remember to look up!"

Sage went to peek in the windows. She was still holding her dual muskets.

The window showed what used to be a living room. A dusty couch sat in the corner, while a broken TV-set was still rusting on a half-broken table. A door further in the back lead to the central staircase. Inside the room Sage saw two demons lounge around. One of them was a young man, probably in his mid-twenties, with a nasty scar over his right eye. The other one was a heavyset woman, who had headphones on and played with a hatchet, throwing the thing up and down, while lying on the couch. Both had not spotted her and looked more bored than anything else.

"How long is that bastard going to make us wait?", growled the man. The woman didn't answer, until she noticed his look and pulled her headphones off. "What?"

"I was wondering how long we still have to wait. It's been over two hours and I'm getting twitchy."

She shrugged. "Why the rush? The boss said we're good. The Doves aren't patrolling here anyway." Doves...the slur the demons used, when they were talking about angels.

The man scratched his scar. "Maybe. Just don't wanna risk it. This whole thing...it stinks, you know?"

"Would you give it a rest, already? Its really simple. We have the box, he has the key. One thing for other and that's it. We've done this a hundred times by now."

"Yeah, with other demons. Not with...him." The man shuddered.

The woman rolled her eyes. "Just make sure to not piss your pants when he arrives. The boss would not like it, if you embarrass him.", she said and chuckled at her companions face going pale at the implication.

The conversation died off, as she put her headphones back on and he resumed pacing the room.

Sage

"Get down," Sage hissed quietly to the rest of the strike team, hunkering down next to the door so that she wouldn't show up in the window. "Quick, get down, all of y'all!"

"Two demons inside," she mouthed, getting out her battle hatchet. "On Cassiel's signal, we break in the door and we do what we need to do. Nobody move before then, y'all hear me?"

She nodded at the gang to make sure they knew what they had to do and readied herself to move when she heard the signal.

Lux

Just two? We could probably take them.

They're probably much stronger than the woman from earlier.

We dealt with her pretty well.

Don't remind me.

This time, Lux decided to just follow orders, getting low to the ground. From there, the group waited, Lux absently checking the mirror glove every so often just in case.

Two demons inside, he heard as he got down. He could definitely handle both on his own, this time for sure, what with catching them by surprise and all. But, the angel telling him to wait seemed really convinced of what she was saying.
Oh well, he figured. The end result won't change anyway, so what's the harm in waiting. His scythe would claim heads, at any rate, and he would feel that good feeling of being better, better than the two demons who would lie dead at his feet.

He could almost picture it.
As usual, the scythe in his hands was held tightly, and he was ready to jump and strike. He smirked. The scythe's steel blade glinted. And he waited.

On Top of a Building

Cassiel watched Sage walked around the back. Meanwhile, beside him, a young angel named Carl pulled out his rifle and began to aim. Cassiel watched him, fiddling nervously with the scope. "Take it off. Sun glints off it.", he told him and the recruit quickly does so, not wanting to give any watching guard a sign that they were there.

Minutes passed. If they wanted to strike, they would need to do it now. Then he heard wings beat behind him. Cassiel whirled around, hand on his sword, before he saw who it was. He relaxed almost instantly. "Mon Dieu...Samael. Ever heard of greetings?", he chastised the angel landing on the rooftop.

Samael was a tall, handsome man. His skin was tanned from years in the sun and his black, curled hair oily. Unlike many of his fellow angels, he also didn't dress in modern clothes, preferring a bleached tunic, that was open to the sides, and simple woolen pants. The bright, pristine fabric contrasting deeply with his dark features. It made him stand out, even without his handsome looks. He wielded no weapons, as usual.

As he touched down, six other angels followed suit. Cassiel watched them and his surprise quickly turned to discomfort. "And you got your Host with you. I thought, you were picking up the demon we apprehended?"

Samael stepped past him and watched the ruined apartment-block. "I see, you split your host. Where is the second team?", he asked, a voice a smooth baritone.

"Sage is about to bring around the back. We were planning a two-pronged assault.", answered Cassiel, visibly not happy about being ignored.

Samael nodded. "Order them to attack."

Cassiel nodded to his recruits, who readied their weapons, but then Samael raised his hand to stop them. "Just them...Cassiel."

The grizzled veteran stared at him, then scowled. "Not sure, what you are getting here at, Samael, but I will not send Sage alone in there without support. This operation-"

"Has just now changed.", interrupted him Samael and held out a document. Cassiel ignored it, furiously stomping past the man and barking at the others to get ready. Samael grabbed his shoulder, but was brushed off in anger. "If you think, that I will allow you to set Sage up, you got another thing coming! I don't give a flying fuck about your reasons or what you think you're doing. This is my operation and my host, so fuck off!"

One of Samaels angels, a little readhaired girl, laid her hand on her assault-rifle, but he simply looked at her and gestured her to calm down. Then he faced Cassiel, grabbed his hand and forced the document into it. "Read it.", he said, his voice calm, but grave.

Cassiel clenched his fist, tempted to just throw the paper away. But then he looked down and read the first few lines.

Read, from whom it was.

Read, what it said.

Read, what it demanded.

His face grew ashen-pale. His hands shook and the document nearly fell out of his fingers. For a brief moment, he closed his eyes and said nothing. The recruits looked at him, worried and nervous. Samael calmly waited, seemingly already knowing what would happen next.

"...it's been confirmed?", asked Cassiel, not looking at him.

"Yes. Without a doubt."

"So this...was a trap?"

"Is a trap, mon amie. One that might end this war, if it works."

Cassiel opened his eyes, calm and cold and grave. He raised his mic, so that sage could now hear him through her earpiece. And he gave the order.

"Ground-Team...Strike."

Sage

"Wonder what's takin' that ole coot so long," Sage muttered, looking at a nearby clocktower. "I hope nothin's gone wrong. That'll sure take some elbow grease ta fix..."

As Cassiel's voice suddenly gave the order to attack, a wide grin split Sage's face. "Alright, everyone ready your weapons..." When everyone was ready, Sage gave her orders. "Follow me and try to stick close to each other, 'kay? We'll meet up with the boss in the middle."

With that, she shot the hinges off of the door. "GERONIMOOOOOO!" she bellowed as she took point and tried to pepper the whole room with bullets to rattle the two demons within and distract them while her comrades moved into position to surround them.

Lux

Wait, we're going now?

Of course we're going now.

But we're not ready!

We'll never be ready! CHARGE!

Lux drew his lance and dashed in after Sage, maneuvering to the closest exit. "DOWN ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"

He pointed his lance at them, wings flaring out behind him. "Hand over the chest," he snarled, taking a few steps forward. "Now."

"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."
