Exactly. His long game was clever, but that by itself isn't enough. He also backed it up with a cunning and effective short game.

Palpatine's plan was overall pretty solid, but it does have a few flaws.

One of the big flaws in it actually is that at least one branch of the Xanatos Gambit relied a little too strongly on Anakin Skywalker.

For example, Anakin having visions of Padme's death just as soon as Palpatine needed a new apprentice is either an incredible stroke of luck or something Palpatine himself arranged. Of course, he was grooming Anakin, but it was still a risky move. In fact, it almost did undo everything in one fell swoop.

Anakin reported him to the council right away and Mace Windu beat him. He only won because, by pure luck, Anakin happened to come back at just the right moment. And no, I don't think Palpatine had losing to Mace Windu as part of his grand plan for a few reasons, nor was Anakin coming back something he knew was gonna happen.

But to sum it simply: Palpatine could have lost had Anakin got stuck in traffic.

Though, if I were to speculate, Palpatine originally had a more methodical plan to turn Anakin that was less risky, but decided to speed up the process when he learned of Anakin having visions about Padme. The Clone Wars were wrapping up, Dooku was dead, and that window of opportunity with Anakin needed to be taken as soon as possible.

Also helps to have mild future sight or is that power Jedi only too?

As noted, Anakin turned him in to the Council immediately despite the years Palps spent priming the kid. That worked out only by sheer luck.

His pitch to Luke went much worse.

Palpatine probably figured the recruitment of Anakin was a death or glory maneuver, if he failed it would have been an enormous blunder but if he won it would be the stuff of legend. It was also implied even without Order 66 having the Jedi kill him very well might have turned the Republic against them anyway. We could speculate as to other failsafes he might have had in place.

And he knew of Anakin's dreams from telepathy or precognition, which implied either targeting a weakness or he was able to manipulate the dream to begin with.

Yeah I think it's brought up that Mundi's race usually has short lives hence all the sex but he's older than that.

Not to mention how old Yoda was when he died. His species matures very slowly but still, 900 years.

On the other hand, every human Jedi we’ve seen seems to age at the usual rate. For obvious reasons.

Well Dooku is quite fresh for his age though.
