If the village is used as a staging area then the local businesses are going to make a killing off of everything from bored soldiers to war profiteering.
On the other hand, I don't see them getting much loot. Not directly at least. Loot belonged to the soldiers who fought. They'd spend it on all manner of things but you never just gave loot to nearby towns.
Well they're hoping that if they win, their country will gain new territory and that they will get to settle this new land. Similar to how many American settlers moved West to find a new life.
If it's a border village, it may not necessarily have strong feelings towards a country. That would heavily depend on how their past looks, their demographics, language or religion. If it always traded with both countries it may still easily do so. It would certainly not be pro-war if it made no profits off of that (ie weapon production isn't a thing they do). On the other hand, patriotism may be felt strongly enough that they might want their country to win even if it hurts them.
So there's a rational side to it (where are we better off?) and there's an emotional side to it (where do we want to belong). They might not even be constant, e.g. it initially is anti-war due to trade loss but as the war goes on they become more willing to side with one over the other. Unpopular rulers could also be a factor in that.
And if the other side started the war by raiding across the border (one of the most common causes of war in pre-industrial states), then most of the village would be very pro-war.
I'm putting this under world building because it has to do with the culture of politics of the people in my world. Anyways, one of my settings is a village located at the border of two countries. Their economy is based off of trade between the two countries. At one point, the two countries go to war. Initially, the people in the village are reluctant to do so because this will mean a cessation of trade and their economy will suffer. However, once they war starts, the people of the village want their country to win the war.
Now the logic for this change in attitudes is that the people in the village figure if their side wins the war, they'll get some loot and land to make up for their financial losses. At the time this made sense to me, but now I'm starting to wonder if it still makes sense.
Now, the entire village isn't pro-war. There's a group of people who still trade with the other country, but it's a small group. I'm wondering if I should make this group larger, even the majority of the village, and the people who are pro-war will be a small faction.
