With the destruction of Earth, many are left wondering what to do next, all that is known is that a group of young graduates who narrowly escaped are left stranded, a broken ship sitting over a unknown planet, S.A.I.L pronouncing a strange energy reading coming from the planet below, and no idea of what else to do now that Earth is gone.

What will your party do?

The Premise

This is a longform Starbound RP meant to follow the official story in a loose sense, following a group of Protectorates made by the people here on the forums. Character interaction, development, and reaction is the aim of this game. Also don't worry about the crafting elements, those will be glossed over.

Now before I lay the ground-rules, I do want everyone to have fun and for this RP to actually last longer than most of mine. Alright, let's get the rules down.

  1. No God-modding, your character can't force anything, mooks are fine, but bosses will be handled by the GM
  2. Nothing lore breaking, there will be plenty of opportunities in the RP to bring shout-outs to life, trust me
  3. This is a limited player RP, once I announce the signups as closed, they are closed, I don't want to overstuff everything, but I won't let it be totally empty. There will be at least a chance for 6-8 players, I may open up more spots later to give a sense of the "Chosen Many" I have going on, or to let in other characters who aren't directly tied to the plot.
  4. Suggestions are fine, the story is largely crafted by us, but I reserve the right to veto anything I feel may interfere with the plot too much, don't worry I'm not gonna be some no-fun allowed jackass that will only allow the stuff I like, just please suggest the idea first, I want everyone to have fun. This does include side-quests.

With that out of the way, onto character creation. Please visit the Wiki for any details on playable races and backstory beats you may need. Also feel free to be creative.

Kepler-7 A Squid Since: Apr, 2015 Relationship Status: Healthy, deeply-felt respect for this here Shotgun
A Squid
#2: Dec 6th 2018 at 8:15:47 PM

Name: His name translates roughly to Mandrake.

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Race: Floran.

Appearance: Like most Florans, he's a light green color. His foliage/'hair' is a light brown, like dead leaves. His foliage resembles spiked hair. He's taller than the average human. He tends to wear either a Protectorate uniform or a human casual outfit complete with hoodie. Fond of baseball caps.

Personality: Mandrake is a well-educated Floran, something that surprises most people. He even learned to speak without hissing, though he still falls into it sometimes. He's excitable and always curious. He's friendly, helpful, and generally a cool dude. He has a strange fascination for human culture, probably due to the unusual nature of his upbringing. He bears no grudge against the Hylotl, is enamored with the humans, fascinated to a lesser degree with the Glitch, thinks of Novakid as sorta 'stupid smart' but otherwise fine, thinks Apex are weird but tolerates the ones not affiliated with Big Ape, likes but doesn't know much about Avians, and thinks of his fellow Floran as his violent but endearing siblings. Has a fondness for guns, mostly pistols.

Backstory: Mandrake was born to an unusually nonviolent tribe, or at least, nonviolent for Florans (meaning they didn't kill outsiders on sight). This was mostly thanks to Greenfinger Threeleaf, the rogue Glitch Bolter, and the former USCM soldier known simply as Kilgore. His education was handled by both Bolter and Kilgore, Bolter teaching him 'proper' social conduct and how to read, while Kilgore taught him how to fire a gun and telling him stories of his life and human history. While Bolter was close with Mandrake, Mandrake loved Kilgore's stories of his life with human civilization, wishing he could too experience stuff like human music, food, and clothes.

Then, one day, the Protectorate came. The protector and his crew had only stopped to give supplies and books to the village, but Mandrake, through sheer persistence and effort, convinced them to allow him to join. He bid goodbye to all the villagers, then went off at the age of 14 to join the Protectorate. He quickly became accustomed to life on Earth, where many people were impressed with his civility and education. He made many friends, human and not. His graduation ceremony was one of the proudest days of his life.

Chosen Study: Guardsman, basically meaning a soldier-like individual who protects the citizens of far off colonies from threats including piracy. Oh, and he also learned some cooking skills.

Abilities: Cooking, Gunplay, playing bass guitar, negotiating with other species

Preferred Weapon types: Guns, all the way. Prefers pistols but likes heavier stuff too.

Starting Items: One revolver, one combat knife, and one matter manipulator. Oh, and some bandages.

Approved! Welcome to being the first!

Since we've had no activity so far.

  • Name: Sev Vokolov
  • Age: 24
  • Gender: Male
  • Race: Human
  • Appearance: Tada
  • Personality: A direct individual who likes to speak in rather broken english to mess with everyone, preferring to keep his distance and try to do his own thing, with a penchant towards hedonistic lifestyles if unmotivated. Despite this he doesn’t go out of his way to be directly rude and would rather solve a problem smartly rather than resort to violence, or alternatively, resort to robot violence.
  • Backstory:
    • Sev grew up in Russia and always idolized robotics, his family having served in military operations beside many robotic troops and even Glitch. With a love of old mecha series and many nights of running Robofighter games, Sev signed up for the Academy to join in their Mech program in both piloting and fabrication, with the end goal being building a mech unit based on a old series he watched when he was younger. He joined not out of the goodness of his heart and a desire to make the galaxy safer, but because he wanted to just have fun, and selfishly get his own mech.
  • Chosen Study: Robotics Engineering
  • Abilities:
    • Engineering - Sev’s degree serves to make him capable of building a suit of armor in a cave with a box of scraps, though it sticks to automated tools and even mech designs.
    • Weapons Training - Sev received basic weapons training and found a proficiency for handguns and short blades, though assault rifles were a common favourite
    • Piloting - Sev was top of his class for the first half of the year as a mech pilot and could be found using various explorer pods as well, this serves to make him highly useful in the great empty.
  • Preferred Weapon types: Rifles, Handguns, Swords
  • Starting Items:
    • Revolver
    • Short Sword
  • Other Notes:

This seems very interesting! Though I do have a couple of questions.

1: Would a machine pistol be allowed? It's been a long time since I last played the game so I forgot if they come in tier 1s.

2: What kind of role would you like me playing? I wouldn't mind some suggestions, since all I can think of is being some kind of soldier XD

Machine pistols are in fact allowed, and it's up to you which role you want to play, part of this is setting up your own character to react to the events of the story.

  • Name: Mair Bryn

  • Age: 22

  • Gender: Female

  • Race: Human

  • Appearance: Here!

  • Personality: Generally, Mair has a curious personality, tempered with chivalry as best as she can. While she loves to learn about new cultures, she tends to want to stick to her own, or at least, the culture her parents brought her into. The girl particularly dislikes disrespect, as most people who disrespect others can't be trusted easily. Her thoughts of people extend past what they are, and rather who they are. As such, her default disposition with races are fine, until they do something that gets on her bad side, much like the Apex allied with Big Ape.

  • Backstory: Mair was originally an orphan on a colony on a more distant planet from Earth, having nothing but her first name. She had no parents to start with, as her mother had given her off days after her birth. The orphanage took care of the baby up until she was six years old, when a peculiar Glitch family came around, and found that they had an interest in Mair. At first, Mair was nervous and apprehensive, having literally known the orphanage all her life, and these two strange robots were going to take her and raise her someplace else. Eventually though, Mair decided to go with them to see what it was like. Talking with her new parents was strange, considering the Glitch's monotonous way of speaking, with them needing to preface their sentences with their emotion. Over time, she got very used to it, and was deeply interested in the Glitch style of life. Though, when she questioned why they didn't stay with their people, her parents admitted that they were outcast for breaking through their coding, unlike those who stay in their villages and castles. Once she became an adult, she wanted to travel the stars like her parents had once done, and she figured the best way to do that would be to join the Protectorate, and went to Earth in order to join.

  • Chosen Study: Though her focused field was in ship engineering, she didn't slack at all during her combat courses, and on top of up-close and firearm combat, she also learned how to operate ship weaponry.

  • Abilities:
    • Weapons Training: Mair has training in most types of weapons, though her expertise shines brightly in her swordsmanship.

    • Engineering: Mair is a fine ship engineer, and can keep a ship running through many harsh conditions. Her engineering skill also extends to the offensive, improving the weapon systems every now and then for that extra oomph needed in battle.

    • Classical Guitar playing: As a way to pass the time as well as stay connected with her family, she picked up playing the classical nylon guitar at a young age and kept up with it over the years.

  • Preferred Weapon types: Swords. Particularly, two-handed swords.

  • Starting Items:

    • Broadsword

    • Machine Pistol

It's a shame people don't seem to be that interested in the RP D:

TheRealWren Omega Overlord. Or superjwren329. Either or. from I...honestly have no idea. Since: Jan, 2011
Omega Overlord. Or superjwren329. Either or.
#11: Dec 30th 2018 at 1:16:37 AM

...Well, I was supposed to post this two weeks ago, but, well, things happened and I wasn't sure what to actually go with, so...yeah, hope this is good enough.

  • Name: Rin Ikedia.
  • Age: 21
  • Gender: Honestly, I'm still indecisive. Gonna leave it ambiguous for now, but probably leaning towards Male.
  • Race: Hylotl.
  • Appearance: Like all Hylotl, Rin shares the usual traits of having three ruby colored eyes and fins. Their skin is colored a light shade of lilac and three teal colored fins on their head, two of them webbed fish-like ones on each side while a third looking sort of like a mow-hawk. Aside from that, Rin has an androgynous build, is shorter than the typical human, standing about at 5'2.
  • Personality: Some would say Rin would best be compared to an ocean, content to just go with the flow and being relatively calm most of the time, even having a bubbly and positive attitude at the best of times. Although there is the occasional 'storm' being a frustrated outburst when put under excessive pressure. Outside of that, they don't have any issue with Florans, provided they don't get too 'stabby', he tends to ask other Hylotl what the big deal about their art is about when they get all...preachy, being quite curious about the Apex's technological advancements, the Glitch in general and gets on well with most humans and Avians.
...Although they don't really know much about the Novakid and well...Rin gets even more perplexed, if not outright skeptical at stories of sentient, talking penguins and whether or not they actually exist.

  • Backstory: There isn't much to be said about Rin's childhood as while it was...somewhat unusual being born on Earth and being left in the care of a human family. Bubbly and always full of energy, even while their parents were busy with research and experiments being told they were 'very fancy doctors' putting the idea of following in their footsteps into the optimistic child's head. Of course, even once things had been clarified, Rin was determined to be a doctor.

    • Eventually, this did leave them a bit at odds with their actual parents who were more focused on science for the sake of solving problems while Rin was more interested in helping others. Not long after turning 18, their parents laft Earth in search of more scientific mysteries to solve while Rin remained to enroll in the Terrene Protectorate after their foster family's encouragement, as not many hospitals were actually looking for a doctor, let alone wanting to train them considering how much technology had advanced over the years, not to mention becoming a Protectorate was also a way to help others in need.

    • It...wasn't as easy as Rin was expecting as there were some classes that were mandatory. Combat classes in particular were a considerable struggle, with most weapons either being too heavy or impractical for Rin to wield and one attempt at trying lift and swing an axe is something they'd rather forget. As for ranged combat classes, Rin's third eye apparently made it harder to aim with both bows and pistols. Rin managed to prove surprisingly nimble and pass the athletic portion of the class at the very least with the studying/theory sorts of classes.

    • Of course, as they were a few months away from graduation, Rin isn't 'officially' a Protector yet and their current Matter Manipulator was reluctantly borrowed from one of the many unfortunate souls who failed to escape Earth during the evacuation from the Terrene Protectorate as without it, Rin wouldn't have made it to the ship.

  • Chosen Study: Medical Support. Kinda what it says on the tin, really. Think Combat Medic but with more emphasis on the medic part.
  • Abilities: Like the choice of studies might suggest, Rin is capable of both treating injuries from minor scrapes up to broken limbs and actually making medical supplies if they have the necessary materials on hand. Granted, it's probably not particularly effective in the thick of battle as it'd be after all the threat's dealt with, but patching someone up keep them on their feet for a little longer is better than nothing. They're also rather talented with a needle and thread, whether it's fixing clothes or knitting new ones and as mentioned above, while Rin's not great in a fight, they're agile on both solid ground or underwater.

  • Preferred Weapon types: None at the moment, daggers if Rin REALLY has to, if only to keep a free hand to grab and use medical supplies when things are getting hectic.
  • Starting Items: A Broken/Rusty Dagger and a Hunting Bow. They might have a few medical kits or just bandages, depending on what'd be allowed.
  • Other Notes: Nothing I can think of. I guess the 'at the moment' bit for Prefered Weapon will be Wands/Staffs if/when they turn up. Sorry if this sounds a little vanilla.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

A solid character, a medic is always useful. With that, we should have enough to start in a week, I'll make the Discord soon. Keep a eye out folks.

I'm sorry to say but I lost interest in this RP, I'm deeply sorry to everyone who signed up. I just lost interest during the wait time for enough players, I've got some potential other R Ps coming out and everything.

Once again, I'm just deeply sorry this didn't pan out.
