I'm not sure if this warrants it's own page(or even if I am posting in the right place, am a bit new to these discussions) but I see this often enough that I feel it warrants comment. In a lot of movies and telivision shows, they will have network/telecom racks populated with computer servers... in places where no sane network engineer would EVER place such a thing. Typically in public spaces or in work spaces.

I see it so often I've taken to calling it "Servers as set dressing" in my head. Its as if some set designer thought they would look cool, but had never been around an actual, functioning rack.

Here's a basic picture of what I am talking about:

And here's a picture of what an actual, functional one looks like:

In real life, you would always have something like this tucked away in a secure room or closet. They are LOUD and produce a lot of heat, so not something you would ever have out in the open next to people trying to do office work. Plus, depending on what is in it, they can easily cost millions of dollars. Even if no one spills coffee on the silly thing, you would not want to see the entire network go down because someone walked by and absently started hitting buttons on it.

The ONLY time you would ever see a populated rack sitting out in the open is if it was a network technician's support lab. This is very specific, here; you wouldn't even see one in say a software engineer's lab(because, again, loud and hot). The only time you'd ever want to have one around you is if you actively needed to access it several times an hour.

Anyway, let me know if I've posted this in the wrong place.

Thanks!

To ask if we have such a trope, the best place is Trope Finder. If you don't have any luck there, you could go ahead and write it up at Trope Launch Pad, where others can help you expand it and provide examples. I've definitely seen this trope in action as well, even if it's harder to recognize when you're not in IT.
