"Dunno," Sam remarked, "Maybe it's like a brand deal or something?"

Byron and Jo

"Please come with me."

The man wordlessly lead the two of them through the inner workings of the stadium, occasionally getting a glimpse of hordes of spectators leaving, until they eventually arrived at a room that seemed to be Kayla's office.

The room seemed rather... makeshift. It looked like still be some old office supplies laying around, but the walls of the room were decorated with framed sheets of cards, some common, others extremely rare. Kayla herself was busy on the phone, but looked up to see the three visitors entering the room.

"Yes... Ok... I'll get back to you in a little while," She remarked as she put the phone down and put her full attention towards Jo and Byron, "Thank you for getting them for me Dornez. Today has just been exhausting."

"No problems." Dornez replied before going to stand guard by the door.

"So, you two are probably wondering why I've called you down here," She said as she grabbed some papers from under her desk, which she began to read "Last night, after the first round, you two were both confronted by your opponents from said round, Dan Tatsumachi and Deckard Becket, at separate times. And, after dueling them, they entered comatose states, at which point both of you called an ambulance for them to be taken to the local hospital."

"Do I have this all right?"

“A deal after two rounds? Heh...that’d be a trip and a half.”

Jason stretches. “Really...who knows, yeah? Might not concern us in the slightest...best we can do is start prepping for tomorrow’s matches.”

Office

"...yeah, that's about right." Jo said after a moment, giving a nod of his head in response. "And there was something weird about the duel too, like I could feel every hit I took."

"Then... are we free to leave now?" Yuria asked.

Arena

Sam shrugged, "I guess. You guys wanna get something to eat?"

"I suppose I could spare the time for a bite, yeah." Jason shrugs and clips his Disk to his belt. "Havin' a place to sit'd be nice. You know a place?"

He chuckles meekly. "Won't lie but my match had me goin' for a moment, eheheheh..."

Byron

"Yeah, same here, damn near wanted to hop in the ambulence it hurt that bad." Byron said after a pause as he nodded his head. "And he...had this weird card. Like...I did research and I didn't find ANYTHING about it."

"Sure, can you give me the address? My guys will drive me to wherever you pick."

Kayla looked concerned.

"Did they say anything about where they got these abilities? Have anything on them that could've done something like that?"

Office

"Oh, him too? Yeah, Old Man Deckard had some weird Magnet Warrior Link..." He trailed off and shook his head as he tried to recall the details of that night. "...his duel disk looked weird. And the crystal he had was a different color, but I don't know if that would have anything to do with it."

Arena

Sam gestured over to the sole unknown round two victor, a bespectacled girl with twintails of black hair.

"Hey, you wanna join in?"

"Eh?" The girl in a dark grey cardigan sweater and yellow top turned and paused as she was about to leave "Oh, um... Sure?" She smiled shyly at the offer of dinner with the presumably more experienced tournament goers and pulled out a phone to start typing up a text "Just gotta let Grandpa know not to worry about dinner tonight. Got anywhere in particular in mind?"

Jason flicks through his phone. “I mean we got diners, burgers, wings...pizza too.”

Musta misses her match...wonder what she plays...

Kayla's Office

"Do either of you know where they could've gotten these things?"

Jo shook his head at that, a look of worry writ on his face. "No ma'am, not in the foggiest."

"Not a single idea." Byron said, shaking his head. "It looked...well, it sure didn't look right. But I haven't a clue on how they got it."

Mellie, who had been quiet up until this point, spoke up from the back of the group. "Um, there's a good sushi place I saw around here... The hours are kinda weird, but I think they're open now."

Office

Kayla wiped her forehead.

"Alright," She said worriedly, "These incidents are very ... concerning to me."

"Getting this tournament together was already a bit of a headache, but this? This is just making it a nightmare."

She looked down at her desk, "We've tried contacting the authorities, but they said without any evidence there was nothing we can do. I'm at the end of my rope trying to assure their families while keeping this whole thing quiet so it doesn't interfere with the tournament too much."

Kayla turned her head back to the duo. She looked and sounded tired.

"Look, just ... if either of you find or remember any information on what's happening, I need you to immediately report it to either me or Dornez. This tournament is very important to both me and the company and we're trying to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible."

Dornez opened the door behind them.

"You can go now."

Restaurant

After a short discussion, the group eventually decided to go to the sushi restaurant Mellie had mentioned. Sam personally was interested in trying out sushi for the first time.

One small wait later, the groups orders arrived. Sam took one of the sushi rolls she had ordered and started to eat it. She quickly swallowed it before giving off a slight shudder.

"Yep, that was exactly what I expected," She remarked as she pushed her small plate to the middle of the table, "Not my kind of food."

Sam quietly started drinking the ice tea that she had visibly dumped several sugar packets into.

"So, what kinda cards are you guys gonna make if you win?"

Sushi Joint

Jason, rather joyously, chomps down on some unagi sashimi.

"I'm...not entirely sure yet? I mean, definitely more 'Chaos' style cards...maye a monster that'll help recur cards back into my deck or grave...gotta be flashy tho."

He nods to himself as he contemplates. "Gotta wow the crowd too, yeah?"

"Not a fan? Suit yourself." Mellie happily pulled Sam's half-finished sushi towards her, setting it beside her order of takoyaki. She considered Sam's question for a moment, taking the time to sample her food before responding, "I haven't thought about it much, really. A universal tutor of some kind, I think. Sylvans could really do with one. ...Do you think we get to design the art, too?"

"Ooh, they are? I've been meaning to check that place out sometime" Kara said, nodding in agreement.

Sushi Joint

And before long she was thoughtfully sipping from one of those bottled sodas with a glass marble in it while she debated her answer to the question.

"I was thinking of making a couple new gem knights, but I'm still trying to decide what they'd do... Haven't really thought about the rest of the set yet"

"My drawing skills are terrible so I hope someone else would take over that duty instead." Yuria said while gobbling her food.

Leaving the Office

"You got it, Boss Lady." Jo said with a nod as he turned to make his way towards the door. Once outside, he turned to Byron and shrugged, giving a slight grin. "Well, this is some weird stuff, ain't it? Not much we can really do for it at this point, I guess... wanna go track down the others and eat? Even if you lost it was a good match, so we should go celebrate."

Meanwhile, in a district of the city filled with old warehouses...

Sasha Vozron stood in a large alleyway, flooded with black tar-like muck. Her shoes were stuck to the ground. The quagmire was filled with large, darkened skeletons of various creatures. (LP: 1400) Her duel disk was active, and in front of her was a large aquatic monster, Evigishki Soul Ogre, ensnared in a mass of tar, partially sunk into the ground, struggling. (0/2800)

Across from her stood her opponent, a lanky man wearing a black breathing mask on the lower half of his face. (LP: 7650) In front of him were a pair of figures, seemingly made from the same ooze that covered the ground around them. They also both also had pieces of bone grafted onto them like armor. One had a large shard of bone acting as a chestplate, with two corresponding bone shoulder-pads. It held in each hand what looked like massive fossilized fangs, acting as a pair of blades. A bear-like skull with shattered teeth acted as a crude helmet, behind which were a pair of red glowing eyes. (2500/0)

The other figure was less heavily armored. It had only one skeletal pauldron, smaller then its companion's. It also noticeably had several sharpened bones impaled into its back like arrows, alongside a long skull with several more white arrows inside of it. Its helmet resembled the skull of a cat, with one fang completely broken off while the other one was fully intact, leaving only one eye visible. The being held a bow, made from two giant fossilized ribs. (2800/0) Slowly rotating around it was a purple Xyz material.

"My... turn..." Sasha remarked painfully as she drew a card. She glanced at it, then back at her Soul Ogre, still stuck.

"I'll activate Gishki Aquamirror!" The signature Gishki mirror appeared in front of her.

"Now, I'll use Soul Ogre and Gishki Abyss from my hand as the tribute! I ritual summon Gishki Zielgigas!"

The shark-man Abyss joined Soul Ogre on the field as they both turned into ten wisps of blue fire, hovering around the mirror. The mirror turned towards her opponent, revealing the reflection of Zielgigas as the wisps converged inward. In a spire of blue flame, the giant Gishki beast's silhouette appeared before the flames dispersed, revealing the revived Steelswarm Hercules. (3250/0) However, soon the Gishki warrior began to sink into the tar surrounding it. (3250-2650)

Jason taps his chin with the end of his chopstick. "Y'know...tomorrow's the Quarterfinals...but when I think about it, I barely know my own fellow participants."

He chuckles, gulps down another eel sashimi, then folds his hands. "I mean, it ain't exactly kosher to talk strategy and deck type, I get that. But like...why'd you all enter the tournament in the first place? Designing an entire set of cards or fleshing out an archetype is cool, yeah, but...can't be the only reason we're here, right?"
