Well, the show premiered today, and so far it's as much of a sakuga-fest as the preview was.

Production values are just stunning.

Does anyone more skilled than myself want to make the page for it?

Pretty sure there's already a page for it. EDIT: Yeah, here it is.

But yeah, it's looking good from the first episode. Here's hoping they keep it up.

It's "Hanebado".

Anyway, yeah, it looks pretty sleek. Though it also seems much more drama-focused than I expected − I hope Nagisa doesn't spend too much of the series angsting, cause so far she's pretty annoying.

One thing I won't forget is to put on my yuri goggles though, because I'm seeing much potential in that department. tongue

edit: Okay, out of curiosity I read the first chapter of the manga and… this is not the same series… like, the tone, the pacing, the characters' personalities… everything's different. Weird.

Episode 2: Now that's more like it. Thank god Nagisa doesn't stay annoying for too long. The episode hit every beat right without being overly melodramatic this time. The animation is still stellar too.

Also, that opening is getting quite infectious.

Action scenes are phenomenal, but the story it's telling is so dull. Maybe that radically out-of-place pink girl will liven things up

Good, lord, the pink girl. Just what is up what that character design all of a sudden? She sticks out like a sore thumb. I can kinda see what they are trying to do there, but I don't think it's working as intended.

Also, coach-dude is the worst kind of adult, pressuring Ayano like that in front of her peers. It really sucked seeing her getting ganged up on like that.

This show has good animation, but I'm probably going to get really annoyed at it.

Yeah, I don't really like the idea of "if you're good at it, then you should do it even if you hate it"…

I mean, obviously she stopped playing because of some traumatic experience involving her mom and not because she didn't like the sport, but that doesn't change the fact that she doesn't want to play and shouldn't have to.

Lots of Japanese...actually uh let's face it, lots of media conflate pushy dudes with charming and lovable fools who just never learn am i right.

This series looks like the truth. Production and animation staff are on point- even the still shots look like goddamn art. High school students having big emotions about sports also still gets me everytime so I'm keeping my eye on this.

also, judging by the manga pages I saw and stills from the OP? Lot of crazy murderface going on. Big big fan of that.

Man, I am loving the animation and cinematography here. This episode really hit the mark, especially with the game sequence near the end. Good to see Nagisa get out of her bad spot this soon. It opens a lot more paths for the show than if they left her there.

The only thing I'm not really keen on is the treatment of Hanesaki thus far. Girl doesn't want to play, yet everyone around her is forcing the issue. I hope this gets explored and called out.

Also, sudden Yuno Gasai at the end was a surprise. In a world of relatively realistic hairstyles and colors, she sticks out like a sore thumb.

Will there ever be a page dedicated to this manga/anime? I barely know anything, but I want to know more about the characters in the manga.

Yeah,it would be a good idea to fix the thread's name…

Anyway, episode 3! Probably the usual Mommy Had A Good Reason For Abandonning You plot, but wow, without extra information we got a Best Mom Ever contender here.

Aaaand the pink-haired girl is a bitch. That's admittedly the first time I've seen this particular cheap trick. Poor girl can't catch a break. Thankfully it ends on a happy note, with both Nagisa and Ayano becoming functional human beings once again. Yay.

Welp, that was a good series, it was a bit short but… what do you mean it's not over?

Oh my god, they didn't have the same hairstyles their whole lives. I don't think I can remember the last time that happened in an anime.

There's gotta be some extenuating circumstance to what happened with Ayano's mother. It can't just be that simple and cruel. And I'll bet it goes beyond just Kaoruko. Who, by the way, makes a strong impression, even if she still feels like a starter villain at best.

I think it's a bit more understandable why Elena basically forced Ayano back into badminton. I still don't fully agree with the method, but I can understand the reasoning. And it looks like she'll be joining after all. Well, if she's back in high spirits, that's one amazing player they have on their side, since everything up until now has framed Ayano as leagues ahead of everyone else. Looking forward to her rematch with Kaoruko.

Episode 4… another twin-tailed rival, another bitch. Ayano really has rotten luck. Although this one's gotta hurt, being her mom's disciple and all. At least the Phenotype Stereotype is realistic this time.

But geez, if you don't want your teammate to "get in the way", don't play in a freaking double. =.="

Dude, Ayano really attracts the obsessive weirdos, doesn't she? And they all have something to do with her mother as well... geez. I hope she wins, although with the opponent being an international powerhouse, I don't really think they can.

So I continued reading the meanga, I'm at chapter 4 right now. At this point I'm not even afraid to spoil myself, considering how massively different the two versions are.

Interestingly, Connie is actually the first rival Ayano meets in the manga; second, Nagisa has much less screentime overall (hell, I think even Riko has more screentime so far); third, Ayano is much more childish in personality, and has some pretty creepy expressions when she's "having fun"; and fourth, Connie is not a bitch. The shock. Also Tagajou, her partner in the double… has next to nothing in common with her anime counterpart.

So far you could say this is less character-driven than the anime with Ayano taking more of the spotlight, and the setup of the situations is also a bit uncanny like Ayano being literally kidnapped with her "friends'" blessing to take part in the training; but on the other hand the manga's characters are so much more fun and likeable…

While watching this show I feel bad for hoping that Ayano will just move on and play badminton. In all fairness she should quit that crapsack sport where everything seems to be related to her mother and do something else about her life.

Eh. I think badminton is actually good for her. She clearly realy likes it. It's not the sport's fault her mother and everyone related to her seems to be a dickish nutjob.

Continuing my manga marathon, with chapter 20.1, which made me fall in love with Connie for good. waii So yeah, if you wanna know what her deal is: Uchika is her adoptive mother from waaaay back when she was a child, and let's just say she loves her mom a lot. She wants to meet Ayano because the latter is technically her older sister and she wants the three of them to live together eventually. Now why Uchika hid her second daughter's existence from Ayano for years is not yet explained where I'm at… at the moment, I can't say I find her actions very commendable, no matter how I twist it…

…Now that's the situation in the manga, but it might be different in the anime, considering how differently Connie acts.

...why did this episode open with a recap?

Ok, that was a good resolution to the match. Two people getting the wrong idea, neither gets to win in the end, so Ayano gets to learn she can fail once in a while without people casting her aside, and Connie can... actually, what was Connie's deal again? The show hasn't explained that yet. She did get to be piled on by the other girls on her team, though, so there's that.

More and more, I kinda want to punch Ayano's mom in the face. We haven't even seen the woman in person yet, but she's getting worse every time we hear about her. I can absolutely understand why Ayano wanted to distance herself from badminton. Poor girl seems traumatized. Like, really broken.

I get the feeling, from these last few episodes and from the way things go in the opening, that the last game in this show is going to be Ayano against her mother.

This is why I said earlier, while it would suck storywise, Ayano should just not do that sport. It is being poisoned by her mother and her acquaintances.

(While saying this, I enjoy the show).

Well that's… a different direction. In a way, saying "screw my Mom" could be the right call, considering how much everything related to her is driving Ayano crazy in the anime. Except those eyes don't look like "screw my Mom, I'm gonna play badminton for myself and have fun with my pals", but rather "screw my Mom, I'm gonna hole up with drugs and alcohol."

And man, anime-Connie really is a bitch… which makes it all the more jarring when she and her teammates suddenly switched to their manga personalities for 2 minutes, then went back to the angst. That was weird. Still, it makes a bit more sense that she tells Ayano right away that she's Uchika's daughter instead of teasing her about it. But again, why does she need to say it in such an awful way? =.="

Now on the plus side, I kinda liked that little scene with Sora. Giving some more spotlight to minor characters like her and Yuu is welcome.

Ayano should just not do that sport. It is being poisoned by her mother and her acquaintances.

Yeah, I'm more and more of that opinion as well. She should just call it quits and try her hand at some other sport. I hear there are some lovely girls up (down?) in Okinawa having the time of their lives with beach volleyball. Maybe she should consider that.

"screw my Mom, I'm gonna hole up with drugs and alcohol."

I hadn't quite figured out what that look meant, but your description is spot on [lol]
