Not sure if this would fit Troper Covens or the Music forum better, but I figured that Yack Fest would be more active than either, so here we go. This is an all-purpose thread for dance and dancing-related topics: traditional or modern, solo or partnered.

Dancing isn't a medium that the TV Tropes Wiki traditionally covers, due to it being a largely non-verbal performance art that's rather challenging to describe and categorise in text. Yet it's been an essential form of human expression for thousands of years, ranging from arcane religious rites to spontaneous Vine sensations, and I think that it's about time that we start a thread for tropers to talk about their dancing experiences, as well as for curious newcomers to learn more about its various forms and share the latest dance memes.

I'll start with my own experiences. I started high school as a pretty standard STEM/debate geek who occasionally went for jam band sessions - in other words, not the most kinaesthetically inclined type. A bit later on, my sister joined the school dance club (the only one) and started dragging me to practice sessions for under-manned performances. I subbed at a handful of performances (all set to K-Pop tracks) before the whole thing (and my debate team) got defunded, and I shelved all my non-academic commitments for my senior year. When I started uni, I stuck to environmental volunteering at first, but towards the end my second year, a close friend (now girlfriend) asked me to try out a locally-based Lindy Hop class with her. It was my first time doing a partner dance, and after the initial awkwardness, I grew to love its improvisational, cooperative style. I've done two performances so far, as well as getting to meet a handful of international instructors at social events and participating in a fusion performance for a uni event - and though I'm not particularly good at it yet, I think I'm on the way there.

Here's a great video that shows my favourite part of swing dancing, the Charleston, in all its wacky glory:
