Mirielle, Seb's House

Miri nodded to Benjy. "I think Emmanuel is in serious trouble. If you can get there, you might be able to help him, even if it means taking him to a doctor," she said, eyes wide and pleading. "But you might be discovered. It's up to you if you want to take that risk." She didn't want to force Benjy to do anything that he didn't want to do, especially since it might lead to him being discovered. "He's off Bliss Road somewhere." She was mostly focused on Benjy and the Emmanuel problem, but she nevertheless said a cheerful "be safe, Jacob!" as the person in question left.

Then a spear went through the doorframe, making Miri jump in surprise. Still, she stepped forward to greet the person that then stepped through. "Hello! Fondue?" she asked, offering the food in question.

Sebastian's House

Seeing the backdoor be yanked off by some girl and her spear, Jacob was in a bit of a state of shock. "Alright... I'm just... going to be over there..." he said, walking back to where everyone else was. No way he was dealing with this shit. That didn't just happen! Though... just in case it did he wasn't going to try leaving. A meteor would probably hit him next time or something.

Sebastian at least had the good sense to be completely confused about this. Unlike Mirielle who offered this intruder food?! Why?! "Did you miss the part where she was inches away from skewering me?" he asked, sounding incredibly offended. "I almost died because of her! Don't just go offering food!"

Harriet very bluntly turned down the fondue. She did not think that she would get this far.

"...I should introduce myself, right?" She was not exactly a people person, and the large insect-thing was certainly a first. "Rynhill...Harriet Rynhill." The spear flew in front of Harriet, as if it did not want to be ignored.

"And this...is a burden."

The spear stayed still. Completely, weirdly still.

She gave it a disdainful glance, and continued. "There were these smoke snake things, and then I got swallowed and after that this thing appeared and won't leave me since, and you all just saw how troublesome it is. I don't even know what it wants or what it is..."

Her voice trailed off as the spear angled itself in her direction. She knew she should be scared, but instead she just glared at it a little defiantly. A long, pointy object aimed at the shoulder would send anyone running. Then, it moved. Straight into her.

She could not feel or hear herself screeching in agony as she fell to the floor and an enroaching shade blacked out her vision. Then, stillness, for what felt like hours to her. And then, carved into the pitch-blackness of her perception...

"Se...ver...ance... Severance? The spear is Severance?"

The blackness hastily parted, and Harriet found herself panting on the floor with her face covered in drool. "Severance" also lay flat next to her. She instinctively grasped for where the spear pierced her. There was no wound.

Hallway

With the school's evacuation sending most people into a panic (and, you know, all the stuff happening that caused said panic), Maggie Liams was having a hell of a time. She wasn't interested in being in class on a normal day. But on this day? It's not wonder so many kids were playing hooky altogether. Factor in police officers and full-blown explosions, and Maggie was a bit annoyed that she even tried to go to school in the first place. It was obviously going to go to shit, so why bother?

She had been wandering the school ever since the evacuation was called, since one kid out of a few dozen missing won't really change anything, when she happened to stumble into a pretty tense situation. Principal Shooter, holding the severely burnt Nurse and trying to stare down a student. Maggie managed to enter the scene on the tail-end of Shooter's little 'Holier Than Thou' ramble, and by the looks of things, the situation had escalated a tad bit.

Maggie remembered why she came in today. To see the chaos.

"Hey Shooter," Maggie called down the hall, making her way towards the group. She and the principal were never on the best of terms even back when he wasn't holding a burn victim hostage, and she just loved to needle him. "Isn't there some other stuff you should be doing? Y'know, besides manhandling the nurse?" Maggie could barely tell which nurse it was under all those burns. Whatever had happened, she was glad it wasn't her.

As she got closer, Maggie casually raised her hands up towards Shooter. Small sparks of electricity arced between her fingers as she used her own power. She discovered it when she woke up on the ceiling, and had been toying around with it all morning, seeing what could stick where, how, and why. Answer: everything, everywhere, because of magnets. It was pretty cool.

She focused her aim where Shooter held Nurse Dini, and after a second, Shooter's hand was gently forced away from Dini's arm. An invisible force that kept him from touching her skin, at all.

"So," Maggie continued, stopping short of the principal, right beside Irene. "I'd think you should go check to make sure no more troublemakers are in the halls. I mean, you are principal, right? Responsible for every student?"

Irene - Hallway

Irene had been preparing her answer, and also making a note of the agent the principal mentioned. Nobody was springing to mind.

She would have been happy to leave Dini in the principal's care, had she any confidence in the man. Watching over someone 'till the ambulance came was not the hardest of tasks, but Shooter seemed more angry with herself than concerned for the nurse. She was prepared to go along with it regardless, if it expedited an end to this idiotic argument. Acting in opposition to the man wasn't working at all.

Then Margaret descended upon them, like a vulture on a carcass.

And some other kid whose identity was unknown to her.

Her eyes darted back and forth between Liams and Shooter. Liams had displayed abilities of some sort, which Irene thought troubling. And she seemed to be using them on the principal, which didn't improve matters.

In comparison, the mystery boy's remarks weren't particularly noteworthy, though she hoped Shooter would take disagree on that assessment.

More than anything, Irene wished to be elsewhere. Watching her sister paint figurines and talk at length about her chapter master's incredible deeds didn't seem half so bad as this.

"I could tell the ambulance staff that I'm there at your behest, principal." Irene said, frowning deeply. "Though you are right, our health and safety is your duty and responsibility. So of course I'm ready to leave the nurse to you."

She mouthed a silent apology to Dini for all the trouble so far. It didn't seem to be letting up.

Brenton Point Park

Hyeon held back a snort as Nadine-through-Benedict’s message popped up on his screen, mentally adding Alexa to Benedict’s grab-bag of super abilities alongside Wikipedia and the whiniest possible version of Google. It was my plan, remember? Don’t worry about it, I’ve got it handled. He typed out as he waited for the other girl to respond—or not, because as far as he was concerned this non-conversation was already over. Hyeon was in the process of sliding his phone back into his pocket and hefting the weight of the pizza box more firmly against his torso while thinking about if they’d have time to stop somewhere for snacks on the way back—when the question was popped, stirring and spewing Hyeon’s thought process like the ensuing spray of champagne.

‘What squirrel?’ was Hyeon’s first impulse, somewhat undermined by the animal in question running forward to leap onto the flat surface of the pizza box once the creature picked up that it was time to leave. Hyeon instantly tilted the box forward out of both instinct and spite, jettisoning Kwang toward the pavement to land on all fours without missing a beat. Hyeon speared Kwangs’s back with an annoyed glance as the animal surged forward to stop and sniff familiarly at Josephine’s pantleg, the musician mentally willing the furry hanger-on to exist substantially less than he did in that moment even while scrambling to come up with a coherent, well-thought-out response.

“N. No.” The Korean teen said in a series of stumbling consonants, trying to sound indignant or apathetic or confused instead of merely like someone pinwheeling their arms on the edge of a large pit. Settling on a spicy mixture of the three while his upper lip hiked up and his gaze did a once-over of the girl before settling on her eyes, he scoffed before leaning his elbow back on the statue’s base nonchalantly and rolling his own eyes for good measure. “A-are you?” He said, with a sarcastic bent and a catch in his throat that he hoped wasn’t as obvious as it felt, sounded, and practically tasted.

BRENTON POINT PARK

There was a quiet boop from Hyeon's phone as another message arrived.

Tudor here. I can read your lips. Are you really going for that answer? Signed, Benedict Tudor.

In the distance, Hyeon would easily notice his car finishing the slowest and most obvious lap around the park, before stopping in a position a few feet away that could only be described as the equivalent of putting a giant neon sign over the hood of the car that said HEY WE'RE WATCHING SOMEONE FROM HERE.

Sixteen seconds later, another boop.

She's from our school. Her name is Josesomething. I never talked to her but I remember seeing her. I think she's one of us. Signed, Benedict Tudor.

HALLWAY

Shooter's eyebrow shot up at David's interruption. "Whu- where did you come from?!" He bellowed... and then Maggie showed up. "Where did YOU come from?!" He asked even louder, looking around to see if any more kids would pop out from the walls. Feeling an encroaching sense of danger, Shooter held on tight to Dini's wrist. "Listen, you two, you heard the message: you need to leave the building n... ow?"

He looked at his left hand, and at the fact that it wasn't closed around the nurse's wrist anymore. In fact, the more he tried, the more he got pushed back. And that was enough to make his eyes go wide and at least a few hairs in the back of his neck go up. Yelping loudly, he let go of Nurse Dini, caressing his own hand and trying to grip it around his right wrist. When it clenched around it, he looked over at Maggie, then at David, and one could practically see the dots connecting behind his eyes.

"Yes, you do that." Shooter muttered solemnly to Irene, his eyes stuck in a wide position as he took several steps back, away from Maggie. "Get her to an ambulance. I will... oversee... the evacuation-" And without even saying 'efforts', the Principal turned around and fast-walked out of there, one hand still clenched around his wrist just to be sure.

SEBASTIAN'S HOUSE

"Oh yeah, in the middle of a big news scene, with injured people, someone can hear shouting from inside a house." Barbra parroted, rolling her eyes all throughout the sentence before raising her hands defensively. "Okay, maybe I went too far on that one. But the point still stands! No one is just going to walk in h-"

The sound of a spear going through the back door was enough to silence all of them, and in Benjy's case, make the bug-man flare up and spread his wings in a menacing way. When he noticed that no one was breaking into the house, he returned to his normal stance, blinking several times before looking down at the other kids. "Sorrryyyyyy... I got sssscarreeed."

Jacob's accidental repetition elicited confused looks from all (except for Rose, who started typing in her phone silently). Hans had taken a step forward and tried to brush his hand against the spot Jacob had just occupied... again... and sniffed his own hand for confirmation. "Ja, that is incredibly weird."

"Offerrrring foooood is niceeee and caaaalming." Benjy chided Jacob, trying his best to sound as non-confrontational as possible.

A voice came from the back door, and Rose looked up from her phone, raising an eyebrow. "Bag lady?" She muttered, walking past the others to get a clearer look at Harriet (and her spear). "Oh no. Bag lady got in this too?" Her eyes widened at the sight of the spear stabbing its owner, only for no injuries to be left behind. "Damn." She whispered to Sebastian. "Bag lady got cool all of a sudden."

David kept his unamused glare on the back of the principal's head even as he walked off, before flicking his gaze back to Irene and Maggie, albeit now more tentatively focused on the latter.

"...We should probably get going now that that's over," he muttered quietly, glancing over at the now released Dini. "...That was a bit weird though, how he suddenly let go... and physically couldn't grab her hand again..." he suddenly stated, boring an intense stare into Maggie. "How would you explain that?"

The phrasing of his words were challenging, but also testing, judging by how he stressed his question. He had already guessed from the incredibly obvious evidence that the 'phenomenon' was caused by her, but was aiming to make clear his disapproval of the fact that she recklessly used her abilities in public view. Even aside from his carefully constructed implications within his tone, the look he was sending her (plus Irene) was clearly stating a message by itself.

We need to talk.

Irene - Hallway

Victory at last. Though Irene doubted it would be anything long-term, she was happy to finally be able to move Dini without any hindrances.

There was the minor matter of the boy very unsubtly demanding an explanation from Margaret, which might blossom into confrontation. Or not. She didn't know Liams well, but the girl was not what one would call discreet as she recalled.

In the end she elected to refocus her attention on Dini. Taking care to minimize the weight and discomfort felt by the nurse, she slowly moved the two of them towards the car park in anticipation of the ambulance.

She was ambivalent about the other two following her. The potential conversation could yield some useful information, but it might also see them focus their attentions on her specifically.

Ivy, VIVIAN'S HOUSE GUYS PLEASE LISTEN
"G-G-Guys!" Her voice managed to raise itself, presumably finding itself a step-stool to get up there. "This isn't re—isn't important! If the school's evacuating, they're gonna..."

No, that wasn't right. Just saying that the entire school faculty was going to be very inquisitive about where the people in this house were, not to mention the large groups of others that Ivy was currently unaware of.

That was all badly underplaying one important factor.

"...MY M-M-MOM'S GONNA WONDER WHERE I AM!" Stricken by the true, unshakeable panic of getting in trouble with your parents in a public fashion, Ivy didn't even wait to see if anyone else was. Bolting off her chair, she immediately tried to get out of that room, get off of the second floor, get out of this house, get back to school on her own two (decently fast) feet and pretend as if nothing ever happened.

Would anyone dare to stop her?

With big bad Shooter out of the way, Maggie grinned. Her fingers sparked again as she dropped her trick, just in case Dini and Shooter started to grow tumors or something. If Maggie's powers could make cancer, she would rather not know about it.

When David started to hint some things in Maggie's direction, she tilted her head, hand on her chin in mock thought. "Hmm, that is pretty weird. I guess somebody stepped in and stopped it from happening." She fixed David with the same accusatory look he was giving her before she smiled and put her hands together in prayer. "Must've been one of the Lord's miracles. Amen."

Her interest in David immediately dropping, Maggie did a small half-jog in order to keep up with Irene as the latter left with the nurse. "So uh, what happened?" She asked, pointing between Irene and Dini. "Did you do that?"

Irene - Hallway

Irene suffered a momentary aside glance at Margaret, before resuming her slow journey.

"Of course not. I found her like this a short while ago, Margaret. There's an ambulance on the way, so I'm taking her to the car park."

A moment later, her manner and speech struck her as harsh and petty. Liams had aided her by getting Shooter to drop the matter. But there was no turning back the clock, so she said nothing as she walked.

Almost at Eustis - Longest Introspection-while-running Scene Ever

By the time Ivan and Ciro had reached Kay Street, the former was about ready to collapse; fortunately, his copious amount of experience with that sensation over the past few minutes made it rather... well, not easy, but bearable, to ignore. The matter of how he'd be of any use while his legs disintegrated to jelly would be handled at a later date. Fortunately, Ciro had begun slowing down, meaning Ivan could follow suit. Less fortunately, the change in pace broke the 'habit' of running Ivan had built up, so all the pain and fatigue came back at full strength, and it took all of his concentration to not fall over like Ciro had earlier.

It was somewhere around this point, as Ivan had avoided his stumble, that his mark had turned specifically to ask him what he was doing. Unwilling to go through two internal crises and a most hellish impromptu exercise session all in the course of half an hour, Ivan decided not to internalise the question, instead just dismissing it by vaguely gesturing his head in the direction they were headed, trying to keep Ciro focused so he could stop distracting them both.

That said, this did prompt a secondary question which Ivan sorely wished he wouldn't've thought of: what could he do? Assuming some monster was the case (which, again, might've seemed almost out of the ordinary had half a school not been impaled by smoke and then gained superpowers), he couldn't really do anything apart from get himself killed, or, at best, make himself a liability as he desperately stared at his notepad like a moron. If it were some gun-toting sociopath(s), he'd get the same result, although at least he'd look like a martyr or something. Not that that would make his parents feel any better. Ivan didn't stop moving, but he did start feeling increasingly nervous; that said, he wasn't one to renege on his word, even to himself. His hotheadedness may cost him, but that would be a problem for Future Ivan. He continued "running", desperately trying to think of a plan.

Eustis Avenue

Not satisfied with Ivan's lack of an answer, Ciro prepared another question, one that was proving difficult to form through his distress. It was, maybe, not the best time to try and spark a conversation (doubly so considering what little he knew about Ivan's condition), but everything was spiralling out of control so quickly that he was almost desperate to regain some sort of footing. Even if it was something as minor as figuring out why the giant Slavic boy was shadowing him.

His attempt would prove to be for nought, as the silence was broken first by the wailing of an alarm ahead of them. He barely had time to wince at the cacophony before it was shut off again, replaced with something that was instead visually alarming: two small bodies running towards them, followed by a larger, serpentine creature that burst out of the roadside foliage and tore at their heels.

To their credit, the younger Gardner siblings had been able to get a good distance before the monster got within range of them. Still, they couldn't outrun it forever, and Don cried out as its teeth caught the edge of his backpack and sent him stumbling. Elly grabbed onto him and pulled, but wasn't quick enough to get them out of the way before the monster struck again, its razor-sharp teeth snapping up the air before them...

And then, it stopped.

The monster would find that it couldn't get any closer to the two children. Something unseen and powerful wrapped around its torso, like a giant hand grabbing hold of it from above. Once this new force had fully gripped the monster, it would then attempt to drag it down the road and away from the kids- which, if successful, would look to all witnessing as if the monster was being hauled away by nothing.

Elly and Don couldn't understand what had happened, but weren't about to look the gift horse in the mouth, and continued their sprint down to where they saw their brother and another boy waiting. Ciro, also, didn't entirely understand what he'd done, his gaze blank but fixed intently on the monster that had nearly eaten two of his family members.

Vivian's House - One of those days...

Zia hadn't blinked for a solid minute, staring through the other teenagers, then through a dozen eyes at the reptilian horror and its own malicious vision. She was only dimly aware of her surroundings and of the miriad of crises blooming throughout Oldport, "Some... Some kind of huge- fuckhuge lizard. It's chasing a couple of kids and..." She gasped, a sick feeling over taking her, "Ivan? Ciro!?" Brayne saw her friends appear ahead of the chase and then recognised the fleeing pair - Elly and Don, Ciro's siblings.

"We...We have to do something. I saw a sign - Eustis Avenue!" The telepath suddenly returned to her feet, a strange calm overtaking her, "Daigo and Melissa are gonna kill people, we need to get there." The statement had a tonality of an order as she took the fleeing Ivy's arm, "What your parents think won't mean dick if we don't stop those psychos! You can blame it on me if you like, I don't care..." Zia noticed the gigantic, scaled thing stopped by some invisible force and released the other girl's arm, "Okaaaay, so maybe they have powers too? Not even surprised anymore-" Brayne waved off the topic and start out the door. A glance to the others communicated that the invitation to help was still open before squelching her way through Vivian's house and sprinting out onto the street in the direction of Eustis Avenue. Zia was suddenly very glad of all those years of track.

THE CAR PARK

Once the kids arrived at the car park, all they had to do was wait a few minutes (less than five) before the ambulance itself arrived, at first leisurely stopping near them, but suddenly springing into intense and frantic action once they saw the state of the nurse.

Almost immediately two paramedics sprung out of the back and rushed towards Irene, seeming like they were going to tackle her, but instead gently prodding her to move away from the nurse as a third paramedic wheeled a stretcher, almost tripping in the inconsistent cement ground of the car park.

"Jesus, kid, what happened here?" The first paramedic (a tall and slender Asian-American figure whose only discernible characteristic were her eyes, seeing as both her hair and mouth were covered by medical cap and mask) asked as the other two loaded Dini into the stretcher, quietly getting to work as they took her to the back of the ambulance.

EUSTIS AVENUE

Snapping and growling, that's all the lizard creature did as it struggled against the invisible force weighing it down. Its toe claws scratched against the concrete, letting out a ear-piercing screech, like a heavy piece of furniture being dragged across an old piece of wood.

Luckily, there weren't enough passerby there to witness the creature, but a few people did poke their heads out of their windows to hurl 'kind insults' at the kids causing a ruckus. Their insults didn't drown out an incoming conversation, which soon came to a similarly screeching halt when its participants- Daigo, Melissa, Kev and Devin- jumped out of the same roadside foliage.

They didn't say a word, instead their eyes simply went from the lizard creature to Ciro, from Ciro to the lizard creature, back and forth, back and forth, until Kev finally spoke up. "We've gotta kill it!" He said, as the creature sunk its claws into the concrete, showing surprising strength as its target changed from the kids... to Ciro.

"Don't you dare!" Daigo hissed, holding out his hand as a sign for Kev to stop. "Lay one finger on it and I swear you're going to pay for it!"

"Daigo, we were going to send it into—" Kev mumbled hopelessly, before raking his hands through his hair and throwing out a desperate scream. "—I can't! I can't stand by and watch this anymore!"

"SHUT THE FUCK UP!" An old man yelled from his window, as a shoe landed several feet from Ivan.

Kev placed his hand against his chest, seemingly gripping the air as he started moving slowly towards the creature. "Hold it steady!" He yelled to Ciro, as he pulled something out of his chest... first, a bright spot of energy, like a living lightbulb, which soon took the form of a light-green pistol with blue trimmings.

As he took on the first steps into the street, his hands kept shaking, unable to get his aim focused on the creature. It snapped, hungry jaws aiming for the approaching teenager, unaware of a third person entering the fray: Melissa, who stretched her hands forward, sporting an unusually dead glare as said hands turned into a dark grey smoke, floating towards Kev's head.

Daigo took a few steps forward, towards Ciro, making sure he could see his inhumanly sharp nails and the two fangs boring out of his mouth. "Let go of it, boy." He growled, his eye-color subtly changing to red. "Let go before you make a mistake you'll regret for the rest of your life."

And to top it all off, not only was the old man preparing a new shoe, but another screech tried to make itself heard on top of this cacophony: that of a car careening down the street, its passenger slamming his foot on the brakes before it hit the gun-wielding teen and the monster in the middle of the street.

OUTSIDE SEBASTIAN'S HOUSE

From his vantage position, the Dark Dragon would manage to see not just the uniformed officers taking care of their own and working towards cordoning off the area, but also a man with a crop cut and a suit bearing the logo of Oldport's biggest news station, practically hovering around the area, waiting for the right moment to strike.

"No, I can't go live yet." He grumbled at his bluetooth headset, walking back to a bored-looking heavy-set woman wielding a camera over her shoulder and leaning against her news van. "The cops aren't talking to me... yeah, yeah, one car's flipped, the other looks really banged up, like something out of a Hollywood movie... they're not talking to me, Richard, I can't tell you what their explanation is."

VIVIAN'S HOUSE

Luna would dare. With a 'softness' reserved only to dealing with an unruly wild dog, she threw her arm forward, trying to both hold her friend back and scoop her up by wrapping said arm around her mid-section. "Woah, woah, woah, wait!" She leaned down, gritting her teeth worriedly. "You're not going to leave me alone with those guys, right?" She nodded at the other kids- and Crispin.

"I heard that." Crispin said, before laughing, wheezing and trying to nudge Ed in the arm. "Get it? It's... it's a joke. I make those."

"Nah, she's right!" Destiny said, grabbing her phone from her pockets. "My Ma, she's gonna be freaked out once she hears the news. I'm gonna send her a message but I can't stay here longer..." She looked over at Vivian, opened her mouth, and then watched in surprise as Vivian rushed out of the room and downstairs after hearing a certain voice.

Destiny just shrugged and decided to look at Zia. "You can talk to people's heads, right? Can you tell everyone to meet up later- hey, wait!" Unfortunately, Destiny was left behind, watching as Zia ran past them. "I do not want a part in whatever the hell that is."

Luna, on the other hand, let go of Ivy, looking at her with the kind of freaked out eyes that could only mean one thing: oh God, oh God, what do we do?

———-

Lenore's eyes took ages to focus on Jessica, but by the time they did, all desire to reply with a biting remark about her purple skin had disappeared, replaced by the usual apathy. "Sticks and stones, man." She shrugged, much to Jessica's chagrin. "I gotta see my friend."

"You have to see your dealer, that's what you mean-" Jessica began, but her 'clever' response was interrupted as Vivian rushed past her and wrapped her arms around Lenore, bawling into her friend's skull shirt and chest.

Vivian's cries were so muffled, that the purple-skinned girl had to lean forward and get close just to hear the tail-end of her complaints. "-and then I got all angry and I turned into Raven and it was so scary it was like I wasn't even myself and I don't want to go through that-" A flick against her forehead stopped Jessica's eavesdropping, as Lenore's eyes bore down on her with a deadly glare.

Before another word could be spoken by either of them, Lenore nodded at the person waiting outside, and all Jessica could do was sputter outrageously. "You don't think I'm going outside to talk to him, do you?"

———-

Slowly, the front door to Vivian's house opened, and a very hooded Jessica stepped out, glaring daggers at Finn from across the street. Before he could register her purple skin, she took a deep breath, and a very convincing shout made its way towards him. "Tell me: who are you and what do you want-"

To throw insult on top of injury, Zia had just pushed her way past Jessica, throwing the purple-skinned girl face first onto the dirt. "Oh, fuck you!" She yelled, before spitting out some soil from her lips.

Seb's House

"Shit, are you okay, Harriet?" Sebastian asked in shock, running over. The spear had run her through, but she appeared to be fine now, if a bit shocked. Also, apparently the spear was called 'Severance' and it was sentient or some shit. Maybe. It certainly seemed that way, given the fact that it was moving on its own and it wouldn't leave her alone. And besides, stranger shit had happened.

No injuries.Intriguing. Perhaps she has immunity to her own powers? Fexsis mused, a feeling of interest reverberating around Seb's mind. No matter. But do take note that these snakes attacked her as well as you, despite her being homeless and not a student. They appear to have attacked specifically children, regardless of station...

"You were there when the smoke snake things attacked?" Seb asked, after making sure she wasn't dead or dying. "All of us got stabbed and shit, too. Gave us super-powers."

Irene - Car Park

"Some manner of conflagration," said Irene, shrugging at the nurse's query. "I genuinely know no more than that. Only came across her after the fact. Whether it was an accident or by design I can't say."

She paused for a moment, watching the three paramedics attend to Dini. A moment later a question popped into her mind.

"Will you need me around, or can I take my leave now?"

Outside Vivan's House

Finn took notice as his mouth opened involuntarily to answer the purple girl's demand, something he would have done anyway without being forced, but an instinct like common sense told him that shouting back in reply would be a bad idea. The redhead strolled casually over to where Jessica had fallen, watching in confusion as Brayne sprinted away and noting with interest that the foreign compulsion to obey was allowing him to delay so long as he was en route to deliver the explanation ordered. Then, crouching by Jessica's head and making no move to help her up, he answered.

"Hi there, Hawkins, I'm Finn fucking Flannagan, and I was just passing by and wondered why there were so many utter weirdos congregating at Viv's house. I guess I don't really care, though, since I'll probably find out sooner or later. Also, I thought maybe I should deliver a warning about a shady government agent going after those of us who were affected last night, but you wouldn't really believe that even if I told you, would you?"

CAR PARK

"That will not be necessary." The paramedic said, looking down at Irene. "You and your friends have already done quite a service, Ms..." She nodded, egging on for Irene's name before shaking her head. "I'm sorry— saving her life comes before courtesy!" She patted Irene in the shoulder. "Thank you for your help."

SEBASTIAN'S HOUSE

"So it seems logical to assume that this spear is your power." Hans said, walking towards Harriet. "If you come inside, we can help you figure out what's going on, so please... don't... stab us with that."

VIVIAN'S HOUSE

Jessica's head slowly craned up, as if a laser beam was about to shoot out of her eyes and slash Finn in the middle. "I'm gonna make you shove your head up your own ass, you stu—" Her eyes widened and she swatted at his chest. "What the fuck do you mean by shady government agent?!..." She took a deep breath and growled. "Tell me about it."

Outside Vivian's House

"Ugh." Finn pulled a disgusted face. "You could just ask, you know. Don't rely on your power for every little thing."

"Anyway," he sighed and began to rattle off exposition, still making no motion to pick Jessica up off the dirt, "there's some government agent with a Department of Justice badge going around under the alias Sarah Travers and pursuing the people who were affected last night, purpose unknown. Given that she threatened the principal into carrying out her scheme with the implication of snipers, though, I'm gonna go ahead and guess that her intentions are less than noble. I found this out by shaking Shooter's hand when he called some of us into the auditorium on what I presume are her orders, because I can see the past of whatever I come into contact with. I don't have a complete confirmation of what happened during their meeting, though, because she has some kind of technology that interferes with our abilities and made me feel like my head was going to explode. Then I got a little too mouthy at Shooter, and he expelled me."

"Which means," he concluded with a raised eyebrow, "I actually have an excuse to be here, unlike you. Unless you somehow knew they were going to issue evacuation orders today. What are you doing here, anyway?"

Sebastian's House

Somewhere in the middle of hyperventilation from blacking out and wondering why "Severance" pierced her shoulder, Harriet heard Sebastian's exclamations somewhat clearly. Clear enough to figure out at least. "Snakes...right, that's what they were." Slowly, her senses returned and she picked herself up off the floor. "And I kinda already noticed I'm not the only victim," she added, as her gaze accidentally came across Benjy again.

"...anyway, I think I'll stay for a while." She glanced over at Hans, half-trying to avoid eye contact. "This thing...Severance won't leave me, might as well figure out what it's good for."

Eustis Avenue, Kind Of A No-Win Situation Here

It was a small miracle that the force upon the monster didn't break as Elly and Don crashed into their older brother, their yelling drowning out each other and the impending panic that was surfacing in all three of the Gardners. Ciro found his footing again and pulled them into a fierce hug, his gaze still fixed on the monster beyond them. He didn't know what he was doing, exactly, but he knew he had to keep his concentration on it.

Working past his desire to never let go of his siblings, he pulled them away and took a second to catch both of their eye. "Elly, honey, what was the name of your friend that lives on Kempser Street?" he asked, ignoring the crack in his voice.

"What?" She blinked, rapidly, and he noticed that her eyes were watery. "I-Isabelle, why-"

"Okay, okay. You're going to take your brother and go to Isabelle's." He felt his attention waver and forced it all back onto the monster. "Then... then stay there until I call, or Dad does, don't leave her house, just tell her it's an emergency and-"

"But you're coming too, right?" Don interrupted. "You're not staying with the monster, right?!"

Ciro swallowed, found their hair with his hands and gave them both a ruffle. "It'll be fine, don't worry. The police are gonna be here right away, they'll take care of this."

"But-"

He firmly pushed them both behind him, his pressure on the monster growing stronger now that his focus wasn't as divided. "Get going! Please. I'll call you soon, I promise."

The two of them looked at each other, then back at Ciro, then at Ivan, as if expecting him to have something else to add. Eventually, though, they turned tail and started running again, this time the distance between them and the monster growing instead of shrinking.

With a shaky breath, Ciro forced down the shock that had been threatening to overwhelm him since seeing his family in trouble. "You should go too." He told Ivan, not looking away from the monster but gesturing in the boy's direction. "I-I don't know how long I can-"

Then everything happened at once. Ciro backed off as the monster lunged at him from one side while Daigo approached from the other, the pressure radiating off the latter threatening to break the bond between Ciro and the monster's restraint. He felt a trickle of sweat run down his neck (in actuality, a bead of blood that had gathered from the scrapes along his chin) as he saw Daigo's form becoming more monstrous out of the corner of his eye. He had no idea what to do- whatever he chose, one of them were going to lunge at him, and he didn't know how well he could protect himself from that.

The decision was ultimately made for him when the car came careening down the street, threatening to run over both the monster- not exactly the worst thing to happen in this scenario- and the only one in Daigo's group that Ciro felt he could trust at the moment. With a hurried cry of "Watch out!", the force disappeared from around the monster and instead materialised around Kev's waist, aiming to wrench him out of the way of the oncoming vehicle.

Car Park (Here All Along)

With Nurse Dini in the hands of people who probably knew what they were doing, Maggie leaned into Irene's personal space. "Hey uh, next time someone asks if you know about something, you should probably play it a bit cooler. You sounded like a robot there." Further violating whatever distance was between then, Maggie gave Irene a sharp poke in the arm. "Since you're not, like, made of metal, I'm willing to bet you actually do know what happened with her. Spill it."
