So instead of Joker showing Harvey Tom and Jerry, it's more like him showing him Tom and Jerry with footage of Rachel blowing up, right?
It's been 3000 years…I'm pretty sure they meant the more abstract kind of brainwashing. This was literally just removing their free will.

This song needs more love. It's pretty weird to say "I'm sure they meant X" when the authors created a work that goes into greater detail.
What you mean is, "I thought they meant X and that would have been a better story."
Really it's more like "X was a better plot device when they were vague. Going into detail ruined it."
This song needs more love. It's like explaining the Force away to be some gut bacteria that's somehow sensitive to mystical auras - it's a piss-poor explanation for a concept that fans just mostly roll with.
Junko's purported Johan Liebert-level charisma and manipulation gave her great cred as a villain, and for Despair Arc to just erase that is a waste on a frankly criminal level, and reduces her to a pathetic antagonist. Fans were willing to suspend their disbelief on this one, and Kodaka produced a completely hacky answer to that mystery.
It makes sense, actually, for the 77th class to be complete cinnamon rolls literally unable of doing anything wrong unless some mindhack video makes them - for marketing purposes. This completely goes against SDR 2's message of taking personal responsibility for your sins - and seeking redemption in spite of those.

To be fair, I always thought the "THE WORLD FELL INTO DESPAIR" concept was stupid from the get go, so I was happy that they added "Ha ha brainwashing!" into the mix. Way more sensible than the idea that humans are just that dumb.
What humans are that dumb.
We are a fucking moronic race especially when mob rule is formed thus driving our IQ's to absolute 0.
All of humanity collectively going insane is pretty believable cause humanity is that fucking stupid.
Just look at Devilman for one. They Goddamn killed themselves over there.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Danganronpa 3 could've used this growing sense of nihilism and meaninglessness that's pervading the world (and even tackle what makes people, particularly youngsters, do terrible things)
I guess I just have more motha fuckin Kibou in humanity than you then :P
But also, AI is scary, and humanity will probably destroy itself because of technology.
So, you know, it all depends on what story appeals to your sensibilities.
Or how about V3.
Over 50 fucking seasons of a show where people kill each other for real.
All because they really liked the original visual novel that GODDAMN much.
If the show whole show thing is really serious & the students really were that vile before the personality implants then the whole of humanity is a fucking garbage pile.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."We could argue all day, but I still stand by brainwashing anime being a terrible explanation, and her treatment by the fanbase and the Trope Pantheons to be a travesty.
Still, this thread is about V3, and what I would like to know is:
Just how many of killing games 4 through 53 were "Recruit people from the streets and give them fake talents" and which ones were, for lack of a better word, "real"?
To be fair, V3 is a world where it's possible to completely fabricate a person with a flashlight.
When identity ceases to be a thing, THEN it's more plausible for humanity to not care about whether people live or die.
There's no real reason to believe that DG 3 was the DG 3 in the V3 continuity though. Again: Tsumugi only uses her fiction cosplay power to turn into DG 1 and DG 2 characters.

x2 I think they may have mentioned that like the first 10 or so danganronpas were 'fictional' (as in not a reality tv show).
While I don't have a reason that the story contradicts your point about DG 3 meaning your reasoning could be right in that sense, I think I've heard that in developing that game they wanted to put the characters from UDG and DG 3 but they ran out of budget for the voice acting so they just stick to DG 1 and DG 2 characters.

There was no indication for when the Ultimate Real Fiction started.
@ Sundown Literai: Why do you care about the Trope Pantheon so much? Its glorified fanfiction and holds no sway on what Junko is like or the overall opinion of her character, as its mostly a Vocal Minority.
@Lord Vatek: If it is retconned, I see V3's end being retconned into something far worse in terms of Nihilism.
Plus, the Main menu implies that the "Tv station" they are all in is a rundown apartment somewhere.
Watch SymphogearBecause the Trope Pantheons are, as I see it, is somewhat of a microcosm of fiction and its characters and how fans/Tropers perceive them. Given how she's become a Base-Breaking Character after Despair Arc, and how she's become a punching bag in there, I can't help but be reminded of how that arc destroyed her cred and mystique.
I just find it incredibly shitty that Junko is no way and will probably never be near Terumi, Izaya, Nui, etc. when it comes to manipulating into despair because of mindhack anime. Now, she'll never get to join the ranks of Trollkaiger (because the King of All Cosmos gave here a reason you suck speech about what she did in DR 3), and since the Hope's Peak Saga is complete, her cred and mystique gonna be forever in ruins.

As they should be :P
... to end this note, I still can't (probably won't) get over the fact that my Junko x Izaya x Nui x Terumi teamup fantasies get crushed like Junko was in her execution.
That's not the only reason why I loathe that reveal, but it's sure one of them.

I am offended at the claim that Junko was never a good villain.
In the first game she was a bomb-ass villain, one of the biggest & most jaw-doping reveals gripping every moment of the trial with an amazing manic energy & sense dread. She's like one of the most iconic character in the franchise, she even stared in a prequel light novel.
Sure she completely lost her magic in the 3 anime & was most likely already losing steam in 2 but hey that's what happens to every popular villain. They are fucking driven into the ground from overuse where they lose what made them special in the first place. Just look at the Joker.
So to claim that she was never a good villain is just complete bullshit.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I think DR:AE was where she was at her best as villain though.

I mean she was never a real character so much as a plot device so explaining how she did what she did was never going to be satisfying.

Junko's a good villain in the first game and a good Woman Behind the Kids in Ultra Despair Girls, but otherwise, I find her presence to be very unwelcome.
It's been 3000 years…Tsumugi and Monaca are better then her, IMO.
Watch Symphogear
I recall a little fan-video that showed Ibuki crying on the curb in the rain abandoned by her crew & fans because they don't approve of the music she wants to sing.
Then comes in Junko who offers a kind hand of friendship thus signaling the rise of the sun for Ibuki.
I would have liked if they gone that route, Junko just taking advantage of the students at their weakest whether intentional or not & convert them to her beliefs.
I think they meant a different kind of brainwashing as in cult brainwashing.
