popular works will have more fans, ergo said work is more likely to have more fanfics written about it
Honestly, my question is the opposite: Why do some fandoms not have fanfics? There are a number of enormously popular series out there with huge casts of characters, and then I look at A03 and they've got barely a couple hundred fics. I'm specifically thinking of the Tales Series right now, but it's something I've seen with plenty of other franchises.
I mean, I understand why Dark Souls is relatively low on fics despite its popularity; people don't play it for the story, and it's pretty low on character interaction. But Tales games are the quintessential JRPGs, so it seems odd to me.
Some of the older Tales games have more fics on Fanfiction.net than AO3, just because that was the main place people posted fanfics at the time. The newer ones are the opposite.
…I did start a thread a while back for Tales fics, along with a long list of personal recommendations. It never really got traffic, but it’s there if you’re interested.
