The animation of this reminded me of stuff from Newgrounds a little. But glad to see a new Season - this was fun. Especially with Keith David and Mark Hamill hamming it up all over the place.
And woo - heroic scorpion character! Fingers crossed it'll be good.
There's a new plot synopsis for season two.
Looks like there will be a pretty big time skip between the seasons. It might as well be a sequel series instead.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).It's interesting that the heroic scorpion has a black exoskeleton instead of red like the other ones.
Season two trailer, coming out on the 20th.
There's a trailer on You Tube, but it's the Latin American dub. I'll edit this post once I can embed an English trailer.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Finished the season! Overall, I kind of prefer it to season one. It didn't have the massive pacing issues the first one had, with the story flowing naturally, with one exception (which I'll get to later). While the animation is still noticeably Flash, it's a little less distracting. You can tell they really found their groove by this point. The worldbuilding is still top-notch and the grimy city of Cardigal felt refreshing after all of the prairies and deserts of season one. It also did a good job balancing the multiple plotlines going throughout. I particularly liked Stinger's story, as cliche as it was, and the bittersweet way it ended.
However, there's some stuff I didn't like: Darkan, despite his cool design, was a flat villain who didn't amount to much, especially with the reveal that he's a Kulipari also going nowhere. I didn't even notice when he was killed off. While the voice cast for this series is pretty good, the lack of new voice actors for the multitude of new characters was very noticeable (though I did like Phil La Marr's Darkan). The fifth episode is basically one long flashback that stops the story in its tracks just to recap viewers on the events of a comic spin-off and introduce two of the comic's characters to the show. Also, despite praising the pacing of the season, I did think that Quoba's fate was very awkwardly handled and it just seemed like a massive tease for a future story. In fact, too much of the season finale seemed like Sequel Bait with a couple of actual conclusions.
I did like this season overall, though. One of the stronger shows on Netflix, but also one of its more underlooked ones. I hope if they do put out another season, it doesn't take more than two years to come out.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Huh, new season came out? BTW, has anyone read the books the show was based on? I'm curious at how much they diverged
I have it on my Kindle when I saw an animated trailer for the series, but I haven't touched it yet.
I haven't read them myself yet, but apparently, it's just a less-detailed adaptation of the books. Some characters are cut out (Gee's younger brother), a major plot point ( the actual reason the Veil was lifted in season one was glanced over. Though, on the other hand, Arabanoo's death was given more significance and weight than in the book.
I should really look the books up to compare. Maybe even buy the comic book taking place between seasons once I get the money.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).So, not only are we getting new Kulipari content, it's coming out on Pryce's own digital network. Huh.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).So not on Netflix anymore?
The article says the first two seasons are still there (and I think they're compiled as movies on Amazon). But any new shows or continuations will be on the new channel.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022)....Why does football player who writers children's action adventure books also have their own streaming service?
I guess this is one of those rich people hobby things? ._.
Apparently. Hey, if you're retired, have a lot of money, and a dream to pursue, go for it.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Still a very strange career path.
Yeah, if you have enough money to not need to work work, you might as well try some alternate amusements.
So, the spinoffs were shown off at Comic Con last weekend, but it seems no one has covered it and no trailers were posted. Pryce opened an animation studio in Baltimore for them. Based on everything we know, they are:
- Dawn of the Hidingwars: A prequel starring Darel's father.
- Veneno: A spin-off taking place in the Amazon jungle, with new characters and starring Burnu.
- A CGI remake of the first season.
- Warflower: Originally going to be novel, it shows what happened to Quoba that led to her status at the end of Dream Walker.
- Scorpion School: Looks to be more oriented to younger viewers, and starring young scorpions.
Wow, this is really taking off.
Mhmm. A couple of the interviews with Trevor Pryce and Josh Keaton, the former having a bit more info. These spin-off shows (and a movie) all coming out on 2021.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).The Outlook VFX website has first looks at the CGI movie reboot of Army of Frogs, Scorpion School, and a bunch of other original animated programs.
There's also screenshot of what looks to be a video game starring Koa. There's actually some screenshots and a video of it, but according to Steven Noake, the project has been shelved.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Update: The franchise is officially moving to Hulu. The third season, titled A King's Rise, as well as the CGI movie will be coming out in late 2023 and late 2024, respectively, as well as any future projects by OVFX.
Remastered versions of the first two seasons are also now on Hulu. The most noticeable changes are the new opening and end credits sequences.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).
I just realized, since I have Netflix now, I can check it out.
