I think the case of Foreigner!Molay resonates a lot -and I say I think because I'm a cishet male- because the Catholic Church is mostly known now for its regressive views rather than any positive work it does so they probably reclaim Foreigner!Molay over their Saber counterpart because it resonates much more with the idea of giving the middle finger to religious figures, with all their associations with gender repression, over the historical account of the templars.

I'll also note that while I like Saber!Molay more because I'm a sucker for history, I can understand if people will prefer Foreigner!Molay over their arcade counterpart, and hey, if that is vindicating for them, I don't think I can criticise that since one of the reasons I gushed about Queen Zenobia is because I like it when historical women get their chance to shine and reclaim the spot they deserve.

I suppose trans people taking Foreigner!Molay as a positive trans rep, and female fans like Mami who are upset at the lack of anything catering to them aren't mutually exclusive.

That being said, Media being what it is, the scale is definitely catered toward Cishet/Lesbian/Transgender-Female side than it is the opposite.

For media, being mass appeal is targeting the straight cis male demographic, that's a fact. That's why every popular game that doesn't only have one gender in it like azur lane or twisted wonderland always show a bias towards releasing female units, writing the story with more consideration to a male MC, using the guy primarily in adaptations/promotional materials,etc. There isn't even a single game I can think of that has equal number of male units to female not to talk of more guys than girls.

Primarily male Vs primarily female fandoms have different philosophies and tend to stay seperate (it's obvious from sites like twitter and Tumblr that the fate female fandom isn't small, but whenever you see it in spaces like Reddit and You Tube you only notice the male players unless something happens that rules up female fans) at anyrate. DW's attempts to appeal to the female fanbase is with their yearly special CBC posters, hotel rooms and other merch, which I don't think valentine ever has. Which I don't really care for since you have to live in Japan to access it.

Okay, I looked up when Arcade really revealed Molay, and the reveal trailer for him was on March 17th. So he has been around in full for seven month. Now we know that it takes at the very least six months for Servant to be implemented from conception to final release. So Molay would have to have given a month at most for someone to be like "You know what? This version of Molay isn't working, time to genderbent them". And min you that Molay cameoed in Requiem, so he has been around for some time. Not to mention that Saber Hokusai has many design elements taken from other Foreigners, which includes a western sword.

So what I am saying that there is a very good chance that Meteo had planned for this for a really long time.

That doesn't actually change anything for me.

X2 and yeah it's progress I can't deny that but it's still very much in the minority.

Regarding appeal, I question if there would be any audience overlap between these characters.

Anyway my two cents are that Zenobia is just Boudicca again but incredibly managed to achieve the feat of pratfalling into wet concrete even faster than Boudicca did in writing and Foreigner Molay is an uninteresting mess whose only saving graces are the text doesn't go out of its way to say "No Actually Every Single Part Of This Character Had To Happen In This Exact Way Please Care For Our New Waifu" (which I will automatically retract if it turns out to be another 5D convoluted chess plan) and Shiki Aoki.

I just want to know why it is the foreigners I'm not trying to get have all fallen into my lap.

x2 There would not, no. Jacques is plain even by anime bishounen standards so while his personality is very cute he's not going to be a breakout for the crowd that likes husbandos and he's probably not going to appeal in a significant way to people that just like cool male servant designs without being attracted to them (he's in a different position to the likes of Hajime-chan who had writing to fall back on to boost his personality because arcade barely has a story and he's unlikely to have future events to up his charm in it).

Molay meanwhile (oh yeah, I've been differentiating them by calling the male Jacques and the female Molay) is a sexy succubus with seafood energy so...

Not being involved in the representation thing, I just like Jacques because she has a cool theme going on, with the embodiment of slander thing.

Also, can't go wrong with demon girls.

Broadly the humiliation thing and the 'No you see this Middle Eastern woman WANTS to be in chains and little clothing because she'll overcome it someday!!' when the static nature of gacha games means that her NP vs the rest of her screentime doesn't do much to advance anything.

I imagine this how most fans like Mami feel whenever there's a new genderbent mtf servant.

I would not be surprised come Molay's material, we find out that his Saber and Foreigner versions were created at the same time. I did find it weird how his artist was Kuroboshi in his Saber reveal. Guess the Foreigner version explains why.

Also, in regards to Saber Wars II, who the heck is the redhead that shows up with Billy in the credits? It's the most casually dropped servant I've seen yet in this game. Not even a name or how she's related to Billy.

Nobody knows.

It's been two years since the event was originally released in Japan, and we still have no clue who the hell that cowgirl is. Probably won't find out till either Saber Wars III or until Billy gets an event focused around him.

Not to nitpick but the golden chains were historically accurate and her wanting overcome her past as an imperfect queen probably has to do with the fact that Zenobia's actions lead to the ruin of Palmyra itself just after her late husband Odaenathus led Palmyra to its highest point as a friend of Rome.

That and the fact that she basically usurped her son to crown herself empress was probably not exactly her highest point.

I don't think that meaningfully serves as redress for my problems with characterization, since Zenobia's depiction is an extrapolation of historical detail, not the other way round.

So... anyone else here actually like de Molay?
