Toriyama loved the Bardock special so much that he canonized it in the manga. Almost nothing that Toei added to Dragon Ball made it into manga canon, with Toriyama even admitting outright that he barely even watched any of the anime. But he loved Bardock. IIRC He even said in interview that what fascinates him about Bardock is that it's a story he could never bring himself to write.

Which. Uh. Kind of foreshadowed the disconnect when, many decades later, he tried to write Bardock.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.
Nick and Lani rewatching GT is a real treat. It's fun seeing them comment on just how bad the pacing and characterization were especially in the first twenty episodes.
In GT, stuff just kind of happens but there is no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes events will just drag out like on the asteroid planet but it's not in service to the story. The slow pace doesn't emphasize an idea or help build a quiet moment for character work. It's just slow because they didn't write enough content and couldn't storyboard something out. And it's a problem that plagues the first third of GT. Each episode really feels like the writers are struggling to fill that half-hour mark. I really excited to see how they feel about the tonal shifts in the Baby arc.

Toriyama's Bardock really feels like a different take on the character than the original. Not necessarily better or worse but just a very different spin both character wise and tonally. The original Bardock felt a lot more melancholy and gruffer than Toriyama's version. It makes me curious how Toriyama would have written Bardock during the different eras of the series (Early DB, King Piccolo, Saiyan, Frieza, Cell, Buu, etc)

That's an interesting thought...but unfortunately we'll never know because it's adapted 1:1 in a movie, disregarding the Jaco stuff.

So as joked about in the last DBZ Kai Abridged, there was to be a Cell Game video with Alucard from the Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
That said, any other anime characters you could see trying to challenge Cell?
Maybe Speed Racer for one and as I've had my first rebinging of Ranma 1/2, maybe Ranma Saotome and some of his cast?
I see Ryoga Hibiki lucking onto the stadium as he has bad sense of direction. Genma Saotome would immediately back out and just play innocent in panda form.😏
