EC Comics were, at the time, the best produced and probably the most sophisticated and mature comics in the US.

Ah, yes, EC comics! Some of the best comic book work ever produced, and somewhat underrated these days.
Don't forget the original comic book format of MAD. Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood and company produced some terrific work, with some really, truly funny satire. My personal favorite would have to be their take on Bringing Up Father, which deconstructs slapstick violence by having every other page drawn realistically, with the bruises and injuries all very evident.

I've been getting more into old comics, and I think EC made some of the best of them. Can you think of any other comic back then or today like Tales from the Crypt or Two Fisted Tales?
Oh yeah, and EC Comics has a nightmare fuel page now. Believe me, it earned it.
