Well, the MLA guys refer to each other by their codes, so it's a reasonable assumption that Geten is a code, even if it doesn't really fit their pattern.

But I'm starting to think that the relationship between him and Re-Destro goes beyond mere comrades in arms and that's why he calls him by name.

But anyway, this chapter establishes five pairs of hand for Shigaraki, but that still leaves two unaccounted for.

[up][up]Out loud but we have only heard Re-Destro refer to Geten in his thoughts.

On Shigaraki's sickness. It seems he was having some issues with stuff around his eyes and would scratch them.

Apocrypha sounds cool as shit. What else is Geten translated as?

It can also refer to "non-Buddhist writings (especially Confucian writings)". If we're being technical that would be the correct translation, because the word is pronounced differently depending on which it's referring to. If it were actually referencing Biblical Apocrypha, it would be pronounced Gaiten.

[up][up]Geten because it appears to be his name rather then codename. It's not in English like the other Code names.

He and Re-Destro do appear to be closer than the others. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Shigaraki/AFO situation, and Re-Destro has raised him since he was young for whatever reason.

But this chapter opened up a new can of worms by saying that Quirks can sometimes spontaneously evolve, independent of training. That was brought up before with Curious wondering if that somehow happened with Toga, but Toga rejected the notion at the time.

I wonder who else this might be applied to in the future.

[up] Is "can of worms" supposed to be a bad thing or something? It's a great protein-source that seems more and more acceptable in the current world and future, considering the massive downhill slope it's heading already...

That said, the quirks are basically Personality Powers, presumably constructed and fueled by the user's mind and soul, manifested through the body. The "spontaneous" growth isn't really that surprising or unexpected if thinking about it like that, since the human mind is a complex thing capable of immense growth that also dictates all the actions of the physical body that we're taking (that doesn't involve organ management, that is).

If fear holds one back, then overcoming it allows for further progress forward.

Isn't that common sense?

Since a quirk is tied to personality as much as it is an part of the body, getting powerups from a shift in the personality seems natural. That's what quirk means afterall.

So the League getting powerups from a shift in who they are seems like a natural conclusion.

[up][up][up] When you think about it, there'd be no reason for Curious to even think of the possibility if there wasn't any precedent.

They explicitly said that Shigaraki's powerup was likely a result of training though. Not sure where you're getting this "quirks evolving regardless of training" thing.

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014
#31066: Jul 6th 2019 at 3:51:21 PM

… No, they specifically said besides his Quirk, he's obvious been training and it's made his faster and more agile.

I don't understand how you missed that. Especially since Re-Destro also gives another example of it happening with Geten and his ability to alter ice's temperature.

I really like how the heroes are taking the sane, healthy, slow and steady route to powering up while the villains throw themselves (or are thrown) into crazy, "evolve or die" situations that force them to become stronger while breaking their fragile psyche even more.

TitanJump Since: Sep, 2013 Relationship Status: Singularity
#31070: Jul 7th 2019 at 5:58:20 AM

[up] Well, at least Twice's psyche didn't get broken and he only reclaimed a sealed away power-level, not gain an additional new one.

Still waiting to see what Spinner might get from all of this, though, beyond his newfound resolve and sense of purpose within the LOV, that is.

Really curious regarding what Shigaraki is going to do once Machia catches up to him in the middle of the fight between the latter and Re-Destro...since he still have to earn Machia's loyalty after the fight is over as well.

How to prove that he is someone worth to follow?

Cozzer Since: Mar, 2015
#31071: Jul 7th 2019 at 6:18:12 AM

[up]It's true that Twice got stronger and more confident... in his "I'll throw my lot with mass murderers because they accept me as I am rather than trying to become adjusted in society" resolve. As tragic and somehow heartwarming the villains becoming True Companions is, in the end they're enabling each other's disfunctional traits.

I really love this arc.

We got more info on the new movie.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2019-07-07/my-hero-academia-creator-teases-next-anime-film-as-last-one/.148724

It will apparently be the last movie, being described as something of a “finale” to MHA. Apparently it uses a concept Hori wanted to use in the final battle so it will be Plus Ultra than the last movie.

I have to wonder, has another series ever done a villain-focused arc this long and intense? This one will probably end in a couple chapters (depending on how fast Machia decimates the MLA), but it will still be something like two-volumes long.

[up][up][up]Shigaraki is sort of reminding me of the titular character from Dexter. There the whole show is premised on the basis that witnessing his mother's brutal murder and being left alone with the remains as a child left him irreparably damaged and with a desire to kill people. The series is based around him dealing with that.

Some people complain about how Shigaraki is "boring" or how he "doesn't grow", but I think that's missing the point of the character. He can and does grow, but he's not going to move past wanting to wreck everything because he can't. The intrigue just comes from him adapting to his mentality, not moving away from it.

Toga also seems to work under a similar premise.

The fact theyve all but implied he wanted to be a Hero alongside his sister further compounds the tragedy of his situation.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to AFO becoming an evil overlord as a result in the past as well, which his brother never saw because he never tried to look beyond the "EVIL~" since AFO chose Shigaraki for reminding him of a part of himself.
