I assume it works like lots of Poise in Dark Souls. You still take damage, but the hits don't stagger you too easily.

Umm... I don't really know what Dark Souls is, but I can only guess you are refering to Sky's giant combat avatar. Yes, he still takes hits, but they come off more like scratches and bruises that blunt trauma and dismemberment.

I actually referred to Fokias' guy's Semblance. ^_^;

Pretty much, yeah. Taking it to it's logical extreme, he could stop a speeding train dead in its tracks. That would still fuck him up radically.

So the train stops, but he is now a fine red mist?

Post-rework ult gives him passive armor and magic resist. Upon activation the resists are removed in favor of an attack damage buff for the duration.

Also, in season two you could ult while CC'd to break it, which was nerfed out before the rework.
