Yeah, VS dialogues hint at a lot of things that aren't really canon so to speak. Sadly a lot of them are more interesting than what we ultimately got.
I've always treated the vs dialogue as a kind of Mortal Kombat X/11: The Series. The game's story is the pilot episode, and ends mostly he same though with the Big Bad still active and able to be part of vs discussions (Kronika) or take part in fights (Shinnok).
Yeah, but then the VS dialogues imply
- Cassie Cage has a twin sister
- Jacqui has a crush on Johnny
- Johnny got a vasectomy before he had Cassie (and somehow still had Cassie)
- Sindel is the thirstiest fighting game character ever written
So while they're fun headcanon, cyberized murder army or not I doubt we need to take any of those seriously.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).all Jacqui said was Johnny was hot
Cassie: STOP IT
Also D'Vorah and Kotal totally banged, Shao Kahn tried to hire Erron Black and Joker kidnapping Takeda just to troll everyone while either Cassie doesn't know or inexplicably refuses to tell Scorpion
TBH, D'Vorah & Kotal banging really isn't all that hard to believe.
What's hard for me personally believing is that everyone is aware of what happened after Liu defeated Kronika
That's where my The Series headcanon kicks in. The way characters act, it seems like Kronika was defeated without turning back time, possibly without Fire God Liu Kang, but because of that the Time Crash persists.
For someone who hasn't played any previous games, and whose only platform is PC (with PS 4 controller), would X or 11 be a better spot to get into the series?
♭What.I think you're going to want to start with 9 actually. It reboots everything from the earlier games, recaps most of what you'd need to know about X or 11, and it's aesthetically superior to the later two if you want an unpopular opinion. It feels like a hokey 90's fighting game with a modern brush. Also, Mileena.
Plus you'll only spend maybe 2-4 hours running through 300 challenge missions as opposed to playing through the weird collectathon Krypt mode.
Plus 11 is just a weird point to jump into the franchise. It's the most recent entry so everything you play after will feel inferior.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Granted it’s from before Netherrealm really perfected their facial modeling and stuff.
The women in particular can look very off.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Like anyone looks at the female characters' facial modeling in MK9

9 had human Smoke and is therefore the best modern MK.
...Is there a way to legally purchase MK 9 on PC, after its removal from Steam?
Edited by Sivartis on Apr 28th 2021 at 8:15:55 AM
♭What.I actually forgot that MK 9 isn't on steam anymore. [[Strike: Damn you, Freddy]]
I should lurk & look around in the TYM forums to see if they have the answer but as far as I know, MK 9 isn't available on the PC anymore.
Anyways, if you're legitimately interested in the MK's gameplay then you should buy MK 11. It's my least favorite of the NRS Trilogy but it's the most accessible & flexible of the 3. On top of that, it has arguably the best tutorial I've seen in a fighting game. I should also mention that I never got into MK X & 11 as much as did with MK 9 but IMO MK X is the best of the trilogy because it's the fastest of the 3.
If you're only interested in the lore & the story then you're better off just You Tubing the story mode. Especially since I can't think of any way to actually buy MK 9.
But to summarize;
MK 9: The best way to jump into the series with arguably the best roster. MK 9 is the only game of the trilogy that has 4 players offline tag-team game.
MK X: IMO, the best of the trilogy & one of the best, if not the best newcomers of any fighting games. Variations add a lot of depth to the characters.
MK 11: The most accessible of the trilogy with its customizations & custom moves. Unfortunately, the game is a lot more grindy for these accessories.
MK9 is actually still available on PS Now, Freddy included. Of course, that doesn't help Sivartis, since they said they only have a PC, but it's at least available somewhere.
Fair warning to anyone hoping to try out 9, though: for some reason, the game has no single-player versus mode. Meaning you can't just go into a regular match against the CPU. I have no clue why this isn't an option like in all other fighting games, but that's just the way it goes.
Man, hopefully NRS is able to work something out with the Craven estate so that they can sell the game again.
Then again, I kept hoping against hope that they'd be able to renegotiate Ash's appearance in 11. Though that's probably different.

Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonBit of a random question, but I've heard that Scorpion's real name, Hanzo Hasashi, sounds a bit nonsense to actual Japanese speakers. A bit like if you had an American character named something like "Alexander Thompsop" or "Brian Wanderson." Anyone know if this is true?
The given name is ok, but it's the family name that sounds wrong. At least that's what I've heard.
Kind of like all those western names in anime that sound like gibberish to us, I think.
Edited by Blueace on Apr 29th 2021 at 3:10:03 PM
Wake me up at your own risk.Yeah, Scorpion's name is a mashup of two famous Japanese historical figures: the ninja Hattori Hanzo (Hanzo being the first name) and the samurai Miyamoto Musashi (Musashi being the first name). So it'd be like, maybe a Japanese developer naming a cowboy character something like... Jesse Jyatt (after the outlaw Jesse James and the sheriff Wyatt Earp).
♭What. It was the 90’s, we hadn’t gotten foreign names down.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Pretty sure they only revealed his name in X?
Scorpion's real name has been a thing since the very beginning of MK 1. Why improve/change by MK 9 will forever remain a mystery to me.
So VS CPU wasn't exactly a common feature until the last decade. Tekken 6 & MVC 3 didn't have that either & this was when NRS, now being known as NRS, was really getting their together.
The fact we don't have news even with the new movie out pretty much tells that we're just not getting more DLC in general. It's a little disappointing, but MK 11 had solid support overall.

Ok, so it doesn't look like MK 9 is available on PC (and the lack of cpu versus matches would pretty much be a deal breaker anyway), I'll go with 11.
♭What. Not to make you 2nd guess more than you should but do keep in mind that the game is more gimmicky than before & there are micro transactions.
That being said, you don't have to spend a single cent other than the usual DLC
I think they're good characterization moments, barring Alternate Doppelgangers.
Besides, it's not like we need to defend a murder army that eventually cyberized its various members.
