Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Financial Times has an update:
Abe was seen collapsing during a speech in Nara at around 11.30am, the broadcaster reported. He was bleeding. An NHK reporter on the scene heard the sound of a gunshot.
The former prime minister has been taken to hospital, the report added.
Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, with two stints in office from 2006 to 2007 and 2012 to 2020.
NHK later reported that police said Abe had been shot from behind with a shotgun. The Financial Times has not independently verified the reports.
I hope Abe doesn't become a martyr. I'm worried how the Japanese far right is going to spin this
"Enshittification truly is how platforms die"-Cory DoctorowI'm kind of surprised it was a gunshot. It's rather harder to get a gun in Japan than it is in the USA.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe culprit used a shotgun in the supposed attack.
Those are easier to get, albeit a bit regulated.
Sorry for that, had a knee-jerk response because this sounded like the kind of info that the government/emergency services would want to break to the press prior to an official confirmation of death. Apparently the news came from a local fire department, so while it sounds like a fatal attack on the outset, we'll probably want to wait for an official statement on this one.
Those are easier to get, albeit a bit regulated.
They're the easiest firearm to get a licence for if you're a hunter, and Nara culls its local deer population on a regular basis IIRC.
Echoing hymn of my fellow passerine | Art blog (under construction)Seems to have been a homemade gun, too. This is looking like it's gonna be the biggest political assassination since JFK.

We have photos of the attacker and his firearm, I am 90% sure the fire arm is hand built.... its not one of the shotguns issued in Nara for hunting deer....
And I have never seen a shotgun with 4 barrels and a pistol grip, that is only as long as your forearm come out of a factory....
I hope Abe doesn't become a martyr. I'm worried how the Japanese far right is going to spin this
He is to the left of the politicians we have now.... soooo uhhhhh, good question actualy.

Guy was supposedly apprehended by SP officers.
FYI, these guys are police officers trained in VIP protection.
Yeah. Japan does, in fact, have legitimate hunters who learn how to shoot shotguns (actually, right now the Japanese government wants more young people to go into hunting and they're not getting them). As I understand, in principle an experienced hunter is allowed to get a rifle permit, but in practice you won't get it.
Rifle permits you can get, its handgun permits you cant, there is only 500 of those nation wide.

Long twitter chain doing OSINT on the attack.

Twitter post on the "strange" firearm seen with the suspect.
Gun is clearly hand made from this better angle photograph◊
Only two barrels, but braced with a wood plank.
Nice.
Looks like an improvised shotgun, given (what seems to be) the presence of black electric tapes used to hold the barrels.

Yes, reports are now saying that both the gun and ammo were handmade.
It was home-brewed black powder filled with ball bearings.

Can't seem to find a good shot of the pistol grip.
The best shots I have seen look like a bike handle.
I've seen handlebars that are angled slightly, so that could work.
So basically this fucker made himself a fucking Warhammer 40K Ork gun and used it to kill an ex-president.
Nobody would believe this if it was a movie script.
Prime minister. Japan doesn't have a president (due to being a monarchy).

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Semantics, I'm half-asleep. The general absurdity of the situation still stands.
I'm honestly more wondering about the why, to be honest.
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Tetsuya Yamagami was identified as the suspect. He's a Nara resident and unless I'm wrong, SP officers jumped him when they got him cornered.
One guy's arrested by police in Nara.
