Honestly, no, pretty sure they were always like that.
Disney100 Marathon | DreamWorks MarathonI’ve heard that it only started being a thing with Geoff Johns’ work in 2005 or so.
I don’t have much familiarly with GL comics before then but I remember their animated adaptations being reasonable.

It's been eons since I saw it, but I recall GL: TAS spliting the difference between prickly Guardians and reasonable ones.
Like at the very least, I know Ganthet was a real chad in TAS.
"The scenic route." (IYKYK)
Yeah, John Stewart was originally an architect. It wasn't until Justice League: The Animated Series that he was given any kind of military background. Guy Gardner was originally a gym teacher, believe it or not.
In light of Daniel Cherry III opting out of DC to work for Kanye West, it looks like DC already has a successor for general manager set up: Anne DePies.
According to BC, apparently this is a change that has DC staffers very excited.
Incidentally, Cherry only lasted 16 months? That's only barely a year! OOOOOF.

What I find interesting about John is that he used to be the least used Lantern so his role in the cartoon gave him his big break and propelled him to stardom.
Before then Hal and Guy had more prominence than him.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Indeed he did.
Which is funny, because when Green Lantern first appeared in the DCAU, it was Kyle Rayner.
But for Justice League, they went with John, though I believe their giving him the military background was because he hadn't been used in a while at the time, and they felt he was obscure (I admit, I'd never heard of him before).
As I said, haven't they incorporated his Military Background from the TV series into his comics background as well, or have they let the former supercede the latter.
One Strip! One Strip! It’s like the whole thing with the Batwoman show. Technically speaking Ryan Wilder is prolly more well known than Kate Kane at this point but that doesn’t mean Ryan is more popular in the reader base than Kate who actually is the star of many stories.
And this extends to John somewhat as from what I’ve seen the most popular Lanterns are Hal and Kyle somewhat by virtue of their respective runs with Jessica quickly catching up to them as this generations breakout character.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Interesting. Are you saying John and Guy aren't popular at all? I'd have thought the opposite.
I am fascinated by the stuff about Hal and how his run with Green Arrow did far more damage to him than intended (to the point where his portrayal in that is the reason DC wrote him off as boring and tossed him under the bus with the whole Parralax thing).
Then again, Ollie is pretty much defined by being a self righteous prick, and it sounds like this run helped a lot in that. Like at this point, it doesn't take much to taint a character in a negative way.
One Strip! One Strip! It’s more like each Lantern has fanbases of various sizes which are influenced by the various stories they have been in. It’s not to say they aren’t popular, just some are more popular than the other due to various factors.
For instance Guy and Alan Scott’s fanbase’s are at least also comprised of fans of the Justice League International and Justice Society because the 2 are well know mainstays of those teams.
At this point prolly the most unpopular Lantern is Simon due to his general lack of prominence compared to other characters to the point he is the only Lantern who didn’t receive a cameo in the Justice League vs the Fatal Five animated film.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I mean, Ollie being a prick is more a feature and not a bug. You can say he's obnoxious or overbearing, but it's not like he was tainted when there was nothing to taint. Hal maybe had the whole action-hero thing, but Ollie didn't have much going for him before getting on his soapbox.

Ollie didn't even have a personality before Dennis O'Neil gave him one, inspired by Neal Adams's redesign of the character. Before that, he was literally just Batman with a bow and arrow (with an Arrow Cave, an Arrow Car, and an Arrow Signal) and had only survived as long as he had because he appeared in comics edited by his creator Mort Weisinger.
It should be remembered that around 1984, Hal gave up being Green Lantern and John Stewart took his place full time; John was Earth's Green Lantern during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Hal would later become a Green Lantern again upon the death of Tomar Re.
I still think it's weird that Space Sector 2814 (Earth's Space Sector, according to the Green Lanterns) seems to need so many Green Lanterns, when the usual policy is for each sector to have only one, and they're all from Earth. Or I dunno, how big is a Space Sector? Are there any other inhabited worlds in Space Sector 2814? I'd assume there are, as Abin Sur wasn't from Earth, and GL's are (with a few exceptions) supposed to be native to the Space Sector they patrol.
I think they are on the galaxies scale. As insane as that sounds. With many solar systems.
Just how two guys can cover that kinda beat, even with FTL travel or whatever.

Wake me up at your own risk. Its a very blatant case of Sci-Fi Writers have No Sense of Scale.
Though the Puffball Collective which is a kind of hive-mind can patrol an entire galaxy and keep it one of the most safest places under GL watch.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Has anybody read the Garth Ennis Peacemaker book that came out this week? How was it?
It's very close to his Punisher: MAX stuff. It's not bad at all, and if you want a story about a violent murderer who kills unambiguously bad people, it's got that.
But it's also nothing Ennis hasn't done before.
Well they certainly picked the perfect writer for it.
Though I would have assumed Ennies would go all in on Peacemaker's whole "peace at any cost" schtick.
Its definitely the kind of stuff he loves delving into and deconstructing.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."DC announce their Milestone special, the cornerstone of their Black History Month celebrations...will now be out in June.
DC has been pretty bad with delays lately.
Wake me up at your own risk.Delays are still an issue due to the problems with the supply chain.
Here's a first peek at Aquamen.
Awwww Orm is still a badguy.
Also the designs for the Aquafam.
Garth and Tula are confirmed to appear and Goddamn they look great, love Garth's tats.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Yeah yeah we get it, Ennis doing supers is cringe
Hello. So I'm designing the page for this DC graphic novel "Shadow of the Batgirl" and I'm running into an issue. Since the novel is an adaption of Cassandra Cain's origin story, but with explicit Coming-of-Age themes and adapted to fit a new audience, how should I approach tropes that carried over from the original series. For example, Tyke Bomb. Cass is this in both the original work and in this novel. So, should I mention that trope here, or do I skip over it.
And if this isn't the place for this kind of help, it would be swell if I could be lead to where I can gain input on this.
Credit to the Guardians there, they actually took Ollie's critiques of them into account and event sent one of their own (I presume Ganthet) to travel alongside the 2 as a human so they can learn about the people they have sworn to protect.
