Trying to develop a non-Borgish cybernetic species for a particular world. They are a relatively small but well-armed fleet of a civilization, maybe one or two thousand ships. They are uplifted beings from a planet populated by a neanderthal-like species This is meant as an in-joke in a universe populated by various "duplicate species" on various planets; several other species in this 'verse have identical counterparts on distant planets besides humans. Anyway, these guys steal technology. They're pirates and scavengers who steal what they need to keep their spacebound civilization alive (they don't really hold any allegiance to their homeworld where plenty of non-uplifted Neanderthaloids roam). This includes raiding hospitals and laboratories for biotechnology and cybernetic advances. One technology they are obsessed with acquiring is time travel, and this is why they are after the protagonists. They're considered criminals since they steal other species' technology to incorporate in their own, they are after any time travel device they can get their hands on, and they are dependent on raiding mines for substances essential to their technology, or superior to it.

When they need a supercomputer they link their brains and neural implants together wirelessly and process information and superhuman speed. But an individual can break from that link at will. In their "linked" state, their voices are mechanical sounding and they finish each other's sentences; this is not the case when they are acting as individuals.

They use sillicon based technology in their equipment and their ships, which resemble giant snowflakes threaded with guns. They have hyperspace propulsion, artificial quantum singularity power cores, plasma weapons, lasers and guided missiles. They also have teleportation implants. and an Arm Cannon.

Humans call them "Cyberthals." Their own name for themselves I haven't decided yet. Maybe The Chosen People or the Uplifted, or some other English-equivalent that would be more interesting than a generic alien name.

They retain hominid traits like eating cooked food, maintaining a hunting culture (in space), observing rituals from their homeworld for births, marriage, mourning, etc. They reproduce as we do and have tribal and clan units, that make up the various unified factions within their large fleet.
