Gamera is really neat.
He is filled with turtle meat.
...sorry.
I've only watched the Showa films, but the Heisei series sounds cool. The existence of this thread is making me want to give them a go.
Gamera strikes me as one of those characters who's been in a lot more crap then he has good movies. Between every Showa movie after Vs. Gaos, and that limp reboot a few years back, it's kind of hard to reconcile that with the 90's trilogy at times.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatI saw the first movie of the Heisei trilogy. 'Twas as good as everyone said. I need to see the next two.
Otherwise, I've seen the MST Gamera episodes. Have the DVD box set, in fact. One of the discs has a history of the Gamera franchise by a guy who's clearly a fan, and all that history puts the Showa films into perspective. It's interesting how the series developed. That first movie clearly wanted to be the next Gojira. Then Vs. Barugon was a clear bid for mainstream respect and an adult fanbase—by shoving Gamera himself into the background, which was not a good sign. When that flopped, Vs. Gaos desperately backpedalled to regain the kid audience, and succeeded. At which point, the studio heads decided that kids, and only kids, were Gamera's demographic. Which is why the sequels after that became increasingly goofy and stupid.
Yet more proof that movie studio heads don't have the brains God gave slugs. Even in Japan.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great"That first movie was a hit! If we hand the sequel over to a completely different director, I'm sure it will be an even bigger hit!"
"What, he's making the sequel wildly different from the first one? I can smell the money already!"
The Synchtube Troper Coven is very fond of Gamera.
Guess the Heisei trilogy showed them.
Now, if the new godzilla reboot is succesful, maybe Gareth Edwards can be given lee-way by Kadokawa to direct the 50th anniversary gamera film, if one is made?
Watch SymphogearBump, because James Rolfe reviewed all the the movies on his website:

Watch SymphogearMassive bump
a Reboot is underway for 2015:

Hopefully, if the new Godzilla is successful, Kadokawa will be willing to let it air worldwide at some point.

Watch SymphogearI'm a little worried about "new, surprising form."
If you meet me have some courtesy, have some sympathy, have some taste. Use all your well-learned politesse or I'll lay your soul to waste.I'm sure they're probably gonna go with what Legendary Pictures is doing with Godzilla and go for a CGI Gamera instead.
Watch SymphogearI've been watching the new blu-rays of the Showa films lately. The Japanese audio tracks improve the experience a lot, even on the bad ones. The first film still feels like a made-for-TV movie, but at least it doesn't have the awful surf rock theme from the dub.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans should count their lucky stars BBI didn't have to use Gammera The Invincible; say what you want about Sandy Frank, at least he didn't replace the music.
Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatYeah, but wasn't it the Sandy frank dubs where the pronounced Gamera wrong?
Is it not "Gah-MAY-Ra"? If so only the kids said it like that.

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the GreatYeah, that's the one.
Okay, I've given Gamera Vs Guiron a watch on blu-ray and I have to disagree that all of the sequels after Gamera Vs Gyaos were crap. This one was actually quite fun, and Space Gyaos got it worse than any monster in the series thus far.

Okay, I managed to finish the Showa era of Gamera. Gamera Vs Jiger was alright, Gamera Vs Zigra was mediocre, and Gamera Super Monster was a great big pile of WTF.
Because of the similar tone and the prologue's time setting, I keep a headcanon that Gamera the Brave was the real ending to the Showa series instead of the Gamera clip show.
That reminds me, Gamera The Brave is the only one I haven't seen yet. But that being said, I kind of enjoyed the clip show. It was one of those things that seemed like you'd assume you hallucinated it if you watched it drunk.
50th Anniversary short film/Proof of Concept trailer for a new feature was released at NYCC
Got a lot of Godzilla 2014 vibes from the opening scene of the trailer in terms of lighting.
Not a bad thing, I would say. And it feels like an epilogue to the 90's trilogy with all the Gyaos attacking Tokyo at once.

Talk about anyhting Gamera related here.
I just saw the heisei trilogy.
I agree, that even most Godzilla movies from the same time period would have a hard time being in the same league as them.
Having Kow Otani be the music composer helps.
