I get bored with cutesy themes. T-rated fics can only go so far.
Sometimes, I want to explore the dark nuances of a character's mind. And, in my opinion, the best fics for me are those that have lots of action, balanced dialogue, thoughts, etc.
I also love kickass action scenes. And sometimes, I'm just in the mood for blood n' gore.
I started reading romance novels when I was 15. Sex is now boring for me to read, unless I REALLY love the characters and such. But after the first time, it starts to get repetitive and I don't want to read it any more.

I'm kind of a sucker for amping up the violence factor with works and characters that don't normally go to that level, as long as it's not crazy gratuitous gore splattering everywhere, if that makes any sense. Like, maybe this isn't the best comparison, but I really like the scene from Colin Baker's run on Doctor Who where he has to desperately struggle to not get dropped in an acid bath and then makes a pithy remark after the two people who tried to kill him fall in on accident. I kinda like the idea of writing fanfiction where characters from works that flirted with having violence and action are thrown into more realistic life of death situations, and those usually come with an M rating.

I like really dark M-rated fics. Badly written sex fics are also a guilty pleasure of mine because of all the weird euphemisms for vagina and penis.
