That would be like the early Dragon Ball tournaments, in which people use magic or kamehameha or are a talking dragon, and everyone acts like it's impressive but normal.

Also none of the normal people can see the Green energy and Stuff.

I think the whole idea of nen being a secret is actually more of a problem than the Heaven's Arena arc. Like, it doesn't make any sense for Killua's backstory either (why wouldn't they want to start teaching him from a younger age like his brothers?), and there are plenty of criminals like the Spiders with no desire to keep nen a secret either.

It's pretty obvious that the entire existence of these superpowers was retconned after the Hunter Exam.

I've been wondering when exactly Togashi decided to add Nen. There's a lot of early stuff like Hisoka's aura during the tag battle and Illumi's aura during the reverse tournament that seems to hint at Nen being planned really early on but thee's also a lot of early stuff that seem like they really should be Nen but explicitly aren't like Gon, Killua and Kurapika's super strength despite their lack of muscles and how Killua can grow claws and appear to be in multiple places at once.

So, Chimera Ant arc is 61 episodes. We're on Episode 103. It ends at Episode 136.

Tch-inhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale

Yeah, ok, I think I'm done with this for a bit and I'll let Toonami plod forward awhile. I thought we were approaching the end. Judging from how this is going it'll be at least two months before we reach the end. I'll see you all then.

Positives:

  • Gon and Meleron's unexpected... "friendship?"
  • The Ants spreading across the world and the Phantom Troupe dealing with them
  • Neferpitou and the others figuring out Nen
  • Mereum waking up
  • Killua snapping that one Chimera Ant's neck was brutal
  • The singing sniper ant and Killua's tactics fighting him
  • Kite's introduction and later transformation

Jesus christ what the phuck:

  • that awful scene where bee-girl was shot and arrow-guy was lobotomized
  • "you have accrued interest!"
  • Hey biskie long time no see since last story arc
  • So many Chimera Ants... so many chimera ants to give focus to...
  • still not fond of the "game" from Episodes 101-102
  • Here's this awesome King Chimera Ant, let's push him out of focus after introducing him to focus on the small fry - like imagine if during the Namek Saga we'd just seen Freeza disintegrate Nail, but then we spent 20 episodes watching Vegeta and Goku fight the Ginyu Force... I mean that is kind of what happens but it was building up with Freeza's presence still being felt, like the last boss of a video game.

Alright, now, looking back at Episode 6 (Episode 11 in the older one)... what exactly was the point of Menchi's exam? That exam felt blisteringly unfair and served so little point that the freaking chairman had to come down and insist that the proctor give an easier one.

She was on edge because of Hisoka and in a bad mood because of it.

That exam was also changed from the manga, where it made a bit more sense on its face. Originally, she asked them to make sushi (an exotic dish that no one had heard of) without telling them how its made. They were supposed to observe the tools provided and infer what kind of food she wanted. A test of logic and deduction. However, Hanzo happened to know what it was and happened to blurt out the answer for everyone to hear, so it stopped being a test at all.

[up] (2) That always came off to me as a weird way of saving face.

"Oh sorry Netero person who pays my salary, I didn't mean to create an unpassable test and ruin this year's graduation rate, but, you know, there was this really creepy guy among the entrants, so I took it upon myself to f'ck everybody else over just to get him to leave instead of, you know, calling in one of the 10 other combat specialists available in our organization to deal with him. Oh, that guy with all of the pins in his face? Nah, he seemed to be on the up and up."

[up] Now that makes a little more sense to me.

[up]She never brought up Hisoka to Netero. She bought it up to the other examiners when they were discussing the participants. Also Hunters don't have a salary, the examiners are all volunteers.

The reason she gave to Netero why the test was unfair was because a bunch of the participants insulted her profession. Which she also gave in the manga too.

The latest dubbed episode made me think about how in a show where people are all about thinking things through, I like it when people make conclusions that are entirely logical but also wrong. Like when Morel makes the assumption that Pitou is a Manipulator, when it actuality they are a Specialist who is very good at manipulating because it's so close on the nen chart.
