We haven't been discussing my problems with the show.

We're discussing problems with the show. Mine, yours, whoever's. I noticed that, as usual, I'm getting too bogged down in discussing details and examples and decided to bring my focus back to the point I was trying to make, namely that, in the effort to maintain the idea of a mystery, RWBY never really gives us any concrete information properly and just piles on more and more lore on the presumption that it will be important later, preferring to let us build the show's story for it, and that this is a bad writing practice and a real problem with the show. My question there is simply that: don't you think that's a problem?

EDIT: OK, got to my response a bit too late. To answer you, I'd say the point is to tell a coherent, quality story, one that doesn't rely solely on the audience's imagination to keep them interested. Which is not what RWBY is doing. At this point, we're all more interested in the story we wish RWBY would be than the story it seems interested in telling. RWBY has spent six volumes meandering around a few mysteries that it never gives any solutions or indications to. Very little has actually happened in this story, very few information has been made clear. To me, that's not a story, that's a company trying to retain viewers by baiting them with answers they don't intend to give until people start complaining. And by that point, that's no longer art or entertainment anymore.

I agree that a good work should generate ideas in it's public. Some of my favorite Star Wars material are fanfics and Expanded Universe stuff. But generating ideas on the public isn't the only thing a work should do. And yet that's all RWBY seems to be doing. It doesn't seem interested in actually telling it's story. And that, personally, I see as a problem.

Has a split in Team RWBY and Team JNPR been discussed here? I see a troper unilaterally creating subpages for each character, even though both team pages are still well below the word limit.

"None of them remark on how this is humanity's second go"

Not true at all, Maria very directly comments on it as she reins in the group from yelling at Oscar

[up][up]That's an off-hand remark. The point is that it's not discussed. Nobody seems concerned about it or anything.

Born from dust and all that. But since Ozpin wasn't around for it he doesn't know thus can't be keeping it a secret.

As for the rest of Jinn's infodump it's largely irrelevant to the day-to-day worries of the group. Sure, the Gods wiping out humanity's first iteration is a huge revelation, but the immortal witch who has it out for them is a bit more of a pressing concern for them.

A 47 minute video explaining the Blake x Yang ship, why people like it, and why the You Tuber argues its development has been a natural sequence of events instead of being forced into the narrative.

I did not post this with the expectation that anyone would watch a video of this nature, especially when it's nearly an hour long. I wanted to post something I though was positive about RWBY for a change, given the last time I did so the video in question wasn't very uplifting about controversial subjects.

I also think it's interesting that the video defends Sun's character in a positive light, as anyone who was around for volume 4 will remember the heated arguments about him being terrible or not.

Emphasis mine. My immediate thought on seeing that, before even going further into the post, was "Well that tells me everything I need to know right there".

Re: I remember at least one person regarded him as some kind of rapey stalker, though he only really fit the most dictionary definition of stalker to my mind, given that all indications were his motives were never anything but sincere.

Honestly the fact that he went "alright, you're cool now, later!" at the beginning of V6 was pretty solid confirmation that he wasn't following her because he wanted to smooch her or anything.

On Blake x Yang, I wouldn't say that it's forced, just that it's badly written and has been spinning its wheels for four seasons. I also don't find it a particularly interesting ship because Blake and Yang have no real history. Blake and Weiss would have had way more foundation for interesting character drama.

Meh, Blake and Weiss barely interact and aside of one being a member of white fans and the other part of racist company, nobody cared.

But I do agree Adam should be mad at Blake for being friend of Weiss, is weird how he dosent even know her friend even when he is obsess with her.

Yeah, I'm talking about what could have been with the setup they gave us, not what actually happened. Blake's and Weiss's backstory have the most overlap by far, so throwing them together and seeing how all that worked out would have been awesome.

But like you said, it basically gets ignored. Which is all kinds of disappointing.

We're discussing problems with the show. Mine, yours, whoever's.

Thanks. I had no idea until you pointed that out to me. tongue

My point is that we've been discussing other people's issues with the show — as in other posters on this forum. We haven't discussed my issues. I've been more interested in exploring everyone else's issues. As a general rule, I mostly stick to the issues raised by the poster I'm responding to. I'm sure you've noticed that my posts are quite long enough all ready. My issues with the show can wait for another day.

Has a split in Team RWBY and Team JNPR been discussed here? I see a troper unilaterally creating subpages for each character, even though both team pages are still well below the word limit.

I don't know what's going on there. It hasn't been discussed anywhere that I can find. Another troper caught some of the edits and reverted them, so I reverted the rest.

We did start to have a discussion on reorganising the pages, but it petered out. We should do it because the subject has been cropping up and the Kingdoms page is going to suffer once the Atlas arc starts.

We need to do two things before Volume 7:

  • Decide once and for all if we're keeping the 'First Members don't trope for 1 week until it's out for the general public' message. The three options:
    • No Change: Do we keep it on the pages it's currently on (characters and main trope page)?
    • Increase Coverage: Do we extend it to all Moments pages as well (basically, all RWBY pages)? note
    • Scrap: Do we scrap the very idea of it? note
  • Decide how to organise the character pages.

Regarding the character page reorganisation:

I think the one thing we did get close to agreement on was turning the Technology page into scrap metal (although I'm not completely unfeeling to the irony of scrapping the Technology page right before we start the part of the storyline that focusses on the technology-heavy Kingdom). I'm going to suggest we do the same thing we did the last time we reorganised the character pages: create sandboxes of the splits, decide what we're happy with and then make the change to the live pages.

I've still got the sandbox I did of the idea to split the Kingdom page into Continent Pages, so we can use that page, and reorganise from scratch. I think the main ideas we were exploring were (as far as I can remember):

  • Keep: Team RWBY, Team JNPR, Creatures of Grimm, White Fang and Salem's Faction pages as they are.
    • The Friends and Allies would retain Ozpin, Oscar, Qrow and Maria, but get rid of Sun (who will be returned to his team).
  • Scrap: the Technology page and move the tropes to the main work (A-Z) pages.
  • Create a new Family Page (which will absorb some of the entries from the Kingdom and Historical Pages).
  • Convert the remaining Historical Page into a 'Remnant Mythos' page that details only the characters famous to history and legend. This page would then absorb the oddball 'mythic' characters such as Jinn.
  • Unknown: what to do with the 'Other' Page, which currently is supposed to be franchise material (manga and video games), but it doesn't seem to be thriving, so I don't know if it's worth keeping.
  • The Kingdom Page is the biggest issue. The original suggestion was to split by continent (excluding anything that would go onto the other pages).
  • Any other ideas I've forgotten?

4x[up] I think that my biggest problem with bumblebee its just badly written like with Adam saying lines like 'I will destroy every thing you love' or 'what does she see in you' just how can Adam know anything about Blake relationship with Yang?

Or how Blake and Raven share similar character design and Blake can act as a foil to Raven which given Yang Mommy issues say something Yang.

that's also not getting in to how Adam was spying on the heroes this entire season (am guessing he was hiding in the walls to hear the "master plan" they came up with)

#58691: Mar 5th 2019 at 4:44:06 PM

[up]I think that's the point. He doesn't. All he sees are signs that he recognises as how Blake used to be around him.

  • He only picked Yang at Beacon because of Blake's reaction: Yang turns up visibly worried about Blake, and Adam watches Blake's face as she expresses absolute horror at realising Yang is there. It's the expression on Blake's face that made Adam choose Yang.
  • In volume 6, we unfortunately don't know how much he witnessed on the train or in Argus before he revealed his presence. However, what he does witness is Yang racing to Blake's rescue, Blake making a declaration of protection about Yang, the fact they were holding hands when facing off against him and - what seemed to be the most important thing - Blake vowing she wouldn't run from Yang's side. I say this is the most important thing because Adam's been very fixated on forcing Blake to feel like she needs to run from him.

So, he doesn't know much but he's an abusive control-freak who is losing his control over Blake at the same time she's making all the same vows of protection and loyalty that she once made to him. For an abusive control-freak, that actually is all they need to be triggered.

[up][up][up]About the other page i think it should be rename to RWBY media and cover to games, manga's and books and with team CFVY book coming out and probably more books, games and manga which will more then likely have new characters it should be kept.

Also should RWBY Chibi have it's own separate character page?

Yes. RWBY Chibi is troped as its own work and therefore has its own pages.

Question:

Is RWBY worth it again?

Or is it still middling?

Oooh, boy.

It's sort of a bit of both, I think. It's showing promise again, but it's also still got the same issues, just distributed differently. Volume 6 was by no uncertain terms an improvement over Volume 5, but it's still not good. My opinion is that the show is just slightly above middling right now, with great potential to go either way depending on what they do with all the build-up and setup they have for the next arc. It might improve and turn really good, it might make another hard turn downward, or it might find it's own little spot of averageness and mediocrity and make itself comfortable there.

If you weren't interested in watching Volume 6 as it came out, I'd suggest waiting for the next Volume to end. We might have a more concrete idea then.

Volume 5 is a hot mess.

Without spoiling anything, take a fun action-packed series like RWBY and remove all the action, replacing it with lengthy exposition, things we either figured out from the word go or already know being repeated to us but somehow dragged longer than the first time we were told this, telling how characters progressed instead of showing us, and an overall sense of disappointment.

If you can stomach that though, Volume 6 has a pretty decent start and it makes it pretty clear that Ruby's the main character. Even if it starts to get... annoying at it by the end of the Volume.
