The decade-end charts are out. "Uptown Funk" is the top song, 21 is the top album & the top artist will be announced at the BBMAs.

Peace is the only battle worth waging.

[up]It will definitely be Taylor Swift. I'm not surprised that Uptown Funk got the #1 song of the decade. It's a modern day classic.

[up]I mean my pick would be Bruno or Rihanna (who both have more number ones than Taylor) but...it’s Taylor freaking Swift. She also most definitely sells albums better than either of them.

Drake is probably her only competition as he has streams, seven number ones, and huge album sales on his side.

....yeah, I take that back. Drake’s taking this one.

[up] Oh, and we got an answer to when the chart year starts and ends. Just like last year's Year-End, it started in November of last year and ended in November of this year (in this instance, the 2019 chart year started in the week dated November 24, 2018 and ended on the week dated November 16, 2019), so I guess we can expect this is how Billboard will track every chart year now.

25 years later, Mariah Carey finally did it. Her Christmas classic "All I Want for Christmas" goes to number one, becoming her 19th number-one hit, the first Christmas number-one hit since "The Chipmunk Song" by the Chipmunks with David Seville back in 1958, and breaks the record for most time spent between a song's release and it hitting number one at 25 years in addition to breaking the record for most amount of weeks on the Hot 100 to hit number one at 35 weeks.

The rest of the top 10 hasn't been revealed yet though, so this'll be the only chart news you'll get for now.

What a legend.

Mariah Carey earning her 19th number one hit says a lot about this past decade, mainly how much pop culture was obsessed with nostalgia for previous time periods partI mean, I wasn’t born until 1996 but I heard the 90s were pretty awesome in comparison to the 20’ Teens.

I wonder why we dont see a similar trend involving "spooky" songs around Halloween. I mean, you dont see Monster Mash or Thriller or Somebody's Watching Me or Welcome to my Nightmare returning to the top 100.

I feel it's at least partially because 'Halloween music' is far less of an established genre.

[up][up] "Thriller" has returned to the Hot 100 plenty of times around Halloween though. Otherwise, yeah, "spooky" music doesn't really chart as well around Halloween as Christmas do, given Christmas is far more popular than Halloween and, as Xeroop said, Halloween music isn't exactly an established genre like Christmas music is.

Number 2 is still way to high, tbh. The song is trash and the tactic he used to attempt to get it to number one was pretty distasteful.

Also um...who is Roddy Ricch?

TheEmperah Since: Jun, 2013
#4225: Jan 14th 2020 at 4:08:26 AM

[up] He's a Compton rapper who's been making waves in the last couple of years, being featured in albums by Meek Mill and the late Nipsey Hussle in addition to becoming a XXL Freshman last year, but he has recently become way bigger with the Mustard collaboration "Ballin'" and the release of his debut studio album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial last month which generated the number-one hit he has currently.

"The Box", which isn't even an official single yet, got big because it has become super viral in the last few weeks thanks to TikTok, with Roddy Ricch going "EE ER" repeatedly throughout the song being a big meme. The controversy surrounding Bieber's desperate tactics also probably helped "The Box" a little bit given it's the song "Yummy" is competing with and thus encouraging people who don't like the Bieber song to stream "The Box" more in response. I doubt that had that much impact on how "The Box" performed and I think it would've still gone to number one without the Bieber controversy, but it certainly didn't hurt.
