So I've been debating buying a PS 4 in preparation of Dragon Ball FighterZ - though I fame on PC, I want to be with a more active playerbase and there are quite a number of PS 4 exclusives I want (the new Digimon games, the upcoming Spider-man).

Would the PS 4 pro be worth the extra hundred bucks if I'll only play games like DB or console exclusives on it? PC will probably still be my main gaming console.

If your interested in Visual Novels, you can play the entire Dangan Ronpa series of games (Plus the spinoff third person shooter) on it, though you can dot he same on PC, so....

If all the games you're looking forward are confirmed to be "PS 4 Pro Enhanced" and you have the expensive TV for it, sure, why not?

It'll kick some games into higher FPS and resolution, and if you're big on streaming, the Pro does that on a higher resolution for your viewers.

But if you don't or never will have a 4K TV, the Pro would most likely not be a big deal.

I've been enjoying my PS 4 Slim greatly.

Just a reminder that Bloodborne is still free through PS + for a day and the DLC is also on sale.

The sale the DLC was part of has ended, but Bloodborne is still available for free until Monday.

If you get the game for free and enjoy it enough to get the DLC, you shouldn't mind paying full price :P

Considering the DLC isn't even much. tongue

Price wise that is. Content wise it's very much.

Yeah, that was part of what I meant. There's a good amount of content in the DLC.

In hindsight, really glad that the Bloodborne DLC is as packed as it is.

I could see some infamous publishers charging for each new weapon, tool and area seperately.

Yeah, you could pay the £15 or whatever it was for other DL Cs, and only have gotten one of the areas and maybe one or two new weapons and one boss for that. The Old Hunters has, what, at least three distinct zones, maybe five or six, I forget exactly where the 'borders' are, and certainly there are five or six different flavours going on, I think five new bosses, and about that many new weapons as well. It's fucking good DLC. There's a lot of complaints about DLC these days, and not without reason, but now and then DLC is actually worth it.

Necroing for bad news:

CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment: "PS4 is entering final phase of life."

(Realizes he never got around to getting a PS4 despite meaning to for ages.)

Well. I guess I'm screwed, aren't I? Sigh... sad

Estimates place a PS 5 at 2021 or 2020 roughly.

Oh really when?

Why is this bad news, exactly? It was gonna end sometime, and if you never got a PS 4 but intended to, well, probably the price will come way down now, and hey, there'll still be a new Playstation console with (theoretically) new games, soo... yeah, I don't see much of a downside here.

Also, they release games WELL into the next console’s life cycle anyway.

This is actually good news. The final phase of the console is when all the best first-party games come out.

The final phase of the console is when all the best first-party games come out.

...Really? Is that a fact? Or some video game rule of thumb?

Also, the comments section in the article had someone saying a PS5 will have backwards compatibility with PS4 games. That's just wishful thinking, right?

Given we know literally nothing about it whatsoever, yes, it's wishful thinking. Although an educated guess. Xbox One has it, and it's been pretty successful for Microsoft, and the main reason PS 4 doesn't is because PS 3 is built on completely different hardware. PS5 will presumably be similar to PS 4.

And it's a rule of thumb. Understanding of the hardware is at its peak, and the console-makers want to squeeze whatever money they still can from a console that's been around half a decade. Exclusives are how you convince people who still haven't got your system to go get it, and they're being done by teams who know their platform like the backs of their hands.

EDIT: You can already see it happening. Sony already has a serious Game of the Year contender out this year with God of War, and their E3 conference is being built almost entirely around four exclusive titles: Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us Part II.

Yeah, I was hoping that we'd hear about The Last Of Us Part II at this year's E3.

I hadn't even considered the fact that a new console's release doesn't mean the immediate death of the previous one. I learned from my mistake of getting a PS 2 at launch and didn't get a PS 3 or PS 4 until they'd already been out for about a year. In both cases there were still games coming out for the current console that were more interesting to me than any launch titles on the new console.

And yeah, backwards compatibility would be nice, and I don't think it's an unreasonable hope. As was said, in theory the PS 5 should have similar framework or whatever to the PS 4, and we've seen that the lines between generations are becoming blurred anyway with the likes of the PS 4 Pro, and then add into that the sheer number of intergenerational remasters and ports note , I would guess it's likely that we'll be able to play many of our older games on a new console. The ideal thing would be a new version of the game for the current console that we already have access to for owning the previous one (not unprecedented, when Journey was remastered for PS 4 I went to the store ready to pay, only to find that I didn't have to because I already owned it on PS 3).

Crossbuy typically only applies to smaller, indie games. You're never going to see it on something like a Borderlands or God of War.

According to this article, the PS 5 is still at least three years away.

Between Horizon, God of War, and Spider-Man, if this level of quality is where we are with three years still left in the generation...

It’s gonna be a good three years.

Someone was thinking it would release next year, but surely it would have been at E3 in that case.

Nah. PS 4 was announced, revealed at E3, and released all within a 12 month period.

The PS 4 had nine month window between offical unveiling to launch (February to November 2013), Xbox One and Switch had a six month announcment to launch window (May to November 2013 and October 2016 to March 2017, respectively).

The last major console to have a long announcement to launch window was the Wii U at 17 months (June 2011 to November 2012) and let's just say that it was the least of that system's problems.

In that case, it would be likely that they would announce it somewhere in spring, unveil it at E3, and launch it in the fall?
