So the Kamen Rider Gaim / Ressha Sentai Tokkyuger crossover got me interested in the latter show. I may take a look once I'm done with Dairanger.

Though there are other shows I want to watch as well.

How old are those guys. There's something about the way they went about things in the crossover, that came off as rather childlike (the way they casually looked down the hole that the Badan mole had made, like a bunch of curious ten year olds. And then there's their little stunt with forming a human Train to push the lion invess out of the mall). I just get the feeling they really enjoy being heroes and all.

[up]The whole theme of To Qger is imagination, so regardless of age, the rangers are going to act like children.

Heh.

That makes sense.

So it occurs to me, that with the more childlike mannerisms of the Tokkyugers (though I haven't watched every single Sentai series, so I can't say if others were like this) that the best possible way to port it over as a Power Rangers series is to have the protagonists be actual children, like Kibaranger, Justin, or more appropriately the Big Bad Beetleborgs.

It would even justify the imagination based powers of the heroes. Just have their bodies grow when they transform.

That being said, it might not be so good an idea considering that kids are apparently really hard to work with, but it's a possible suggestion.

So I'm very much enjoyin' Toqger. I find it hilarious, though I doubt it'll be adopted into a Power Rangers series.

[up] Some of the humor clearly needs to be removed to get within the censors(namely the thrusting jokes). But I think that's it.

It being a joke series works fine. Although Turbo went badly with fans, so it's possible they don't want to lose money on a joke series? That's really the only reason I can see them skipping it. It looks like it could be good, and we only had some train-based Megazords, but never a season.

Well I can see it not bein' adopted for several reasons.

  • Some of the humour in the Sentai footage would go right over Western audiences.
  • Saban likes to make their Power Ranger shows be half serious. A serious tone wouldn't translate well with the Toqger sentai footage. Cue Turboo II.
  • Trains aren't really relevant to Westerners, aside from those living in Europe. The reason Toqger appeals to Japanese audiences is because trains and transits are a part of their everyday lives.
  • The train premise and the theme of imagination might just be too silly.
  • Instances of crude humour. Example: Boner-Oh.

Didn't stop them from making RPM.

Also, not like Saban's not shown they are willing to completely ignore the theme of a sentai season. I mean, look how much of Super Megaforce references the pirate theme. Or Megaforce and the Angel theme.

They completely ignored Megarangers theme entirely. Granted it wasn't as blatant as Gokaiger's. And RPM is quite possibly the exception to the rule. It took place in a post-apocalyptic alternate future yet it was self-aware and humorous at times making it borderline post-modern. Unfortunately it's less then ideal time slot kind of screwed it over.

Still I think the train theme would be pretty hard to ignore or change seein' as it's so blatant. They can partially get away with Gokaiger because the season previous they had a pirate themed Megazord as well, and they got away with Goseiger's angel theme because their suits had a rather generic look to them that didn't really imply anythin' angelic outside of the gold crests.

They also ignored Dairanger's theme (Mythological China), Ohranger (Geometry? Ancient Civilization? Okay that one was pretty non-existent).

Accordin' to the trope page it's apparently referred to as 'Super-Civilization', though to me Ohranger/Zeo will be known as the season with the two Dalek Zords.

Don't forget it's the season where the Megazord had superpowered hats. Proving that stupid gimmicks for the Mechas (Like the headers, Hurricaranger's pokeballs, Koryuger's batteries) isn't new.

I actually came up with the idea that they could work around the more lighthearted nature of Toqger by going the beetleborgs route of making the entire cast actual kids.

It'd be a great work around, and play off the more childlike nature of the protagonists, plus both Power Rangers and Super Sentai have a precedent for it, just with only one character.

[up][up] That would probably be a baaaaaaad idea.

Saban has a hard enough time finding competent adult actors, having them use 5-6 child actors would be show suicide. Especially with their "two year season" method.

You may be right.

It's a shame though, since I think there's a buttload of potential.

Imagine the hook: These kids are big fans of the Power Rangers, and then, lo and behold, they get to become Power Rangers themselves. It's something I think quite a few of the fans in the audience could relate to. And some older fans too (who wouldn't have wanted to ride around in Giant Robots as a kid).

Plus, they it could explain some of the sillier things in the series as a bunch of kids fucking around, with no clue what they are doing (since it's been implied since the first season that being a ranger gives fighting ability to those who don't have it naturally).

But yeah, using all kid actors could easily backfire.

Does anyone else feel that the whole "Super Sentai vs Power Rangers" fan war is rediculous? I mean they pretty much have the same plot, a team of heroes protecting the earth from evil. Also, if it wasn't for Super Sentai there would be no Power Rangers.

I'd say the main difference, for me, at least, is Sentai tends to have half-decent writing.

Power Rangers writing and acting tends to vary wildly from meh to awful based on season to season.

[up][up] Occasionally Power Rangers is better. RPM is miles better than Go-Onger (And would've been even better IMHO if they had picked another Sentai as the base material)

And IMHO Time Force was much better than Time Rangers, despite sharing 99% of their plots. I'd say the same for Lightspeed Rescue.

IMHO RPM and Time Force represent what Power Rangers should be. Either a completely new tale using the original footage, or using the extra time to re-tell the same story, but fix some of the weaknesses (Like swapping Time Force's villain for Ransik).

There are elements of Power Rangers I feel are done better than their Sentai counterparts.

I think the MMPR teens are way better characters than the Zyurangers (except Burai, he's the best character of them all). Tommy is a way better Fangranger than FUCKING KOU. Ransik is a cooler villain than Dolnero (no surprise he became comic relief in Time Force).

Of course, there are things the Sentai does a lot better. Story progression is one of them.

I think a good reason the wars have flared up so recently is that the last two (or four) seasons of PR have been terrible. Not only through bad acting and character, but by poorly copying the Sentai. Instead of making their own stories.

To you maybe. I think Go-Onger was hilarious and awesome and RPM is way too damned serious.

Granted, I will grant RPM is one of the few well written seasons.

Interestingly, I think Megaranger and In Space are both awesome, but for different reasons. Mega because it was a season where everything clicked and Space because of its place in PR history.

INT is knowing a tomato is a fruit. WIS is knowing it doesn't belong in a fruit salad. CHA is convincing people that it does.
