This is the thread for discussing everything computer-related.

This thread's On-Topic Conversations counterpart is here.

I just installed Chromium. Basically the same as Chrome, except they aren't constantly tracking my keystrokes and location in order to sell me things.

They'll never ketchup to all this strength that I've mustered.

Interesting timing for the thread's creation, as I just looked up some new parts for my box.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

And I need to find a Processor for my newly bought motherboard. This will be the first time I ever put together a computer.

[up][up] Do you need ideas for parts? I'd know the best combination. What's your budget?

[up] Good for you. What socket is your motherboard? More importantly, what's the name of the motherboard?

Well, I'd stick with Windows 7. Windows 8 is a mess.

Or, if you're willing to wait a few months, Valve is releasing Steam for Linux, Ubuntu specifically.

Naah, 'salright, I pretty much just need a video card, a processor, and a new power supply, and I've got those picked out already.

But if they don't work, then I'll ask. [lol]

[up] I commented on that. I want to get that, but it kind of encourages the death of the desktop.

And Intel is already phasing out seperate CPUs. All the processors will be soldered to the motherboard. Haswell is going to be the last to feature separate processors and motherboards.

I hope the AMD release of Steamroller is really good, because I, for one, do not welcome our new Intel monopoly.

My laptop's still at the service center for repairs. The fan started going on the fritz, making these annoying whirring noises. And as if that wasn't enough, it apparently fried my hard drive. (Not completely, but badly enough that they recommended replacement instead of waiting for it to totally break down.)

Thing is, they're still waiting for parts, apparently.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

I used AMD until it ended up breaking six months after use. -.-

I have no idea why I even went with Bulldozer in the first place.

I'll definitely buy their Steamroller set, because even if I give it away, I want AMD to stay in business.

Back to you! My darling has a LGA 1155 socket and is only into intel processors, if you know what I mean. Good, since I planned on getting an intel processor but I would have had an ASUS motherboard.

Oh yeah, model DH 67 CL. Working on a budget, and stuck in Mexico.

Since you're on a budget, you could go with the i3 3220.

My guess is that Intel wants to permanently fuse the CPU and mobo to make more money. Onboard sound fries? They sell another chip. SATA controller fries? They sell another chip. You want to upgrade to a board that gives you more RAM or PCI-E slots? Intel sells another chip.

On the flip side, how often do you upgrade your CPU without also having to get a new mobo anyway? Of course, on the flip side to THAT, this means less versatility in building computers.

Could be worse. You could be forced to get the new pancake computers. You know, like macs but not from apple. So far the ones I have seen have shitty specs and running windows 8, which I assume its not very resource-friendly.

But seriously, 2 GB RAM? My laptop had that and It had to be upgraded.

Actually, apparently, the one good thing about Win8 is that it's better optimized. Now if only we could pretend the terrible UI doesn't even exist.

I hope it comes with an option of "Turn of this shit I don't like" Like vista did. I mean, Is it too much to expect the start button to display the start menu?

#21: Dec 4th 2012 at 11:58:03 AM

My laptop has recently started to make ominous buzzing noises and run hotter than is healthy, so I don't know how much more life I will get out of it.

When I get a new machine, I'm strongly tempted to play around with some alternate OS's before I have too much invested in it. I've been planning to ditch Windows for a while now, but I can't afford the interruption in productivity on my sole computer right now.

[up][up]No, you can't, and yes, it is too much to ask.

[up]Well, Linux Mint is pretty user friendly for a Linux distro and can run anything made for Ubuntu, which amounts to "almost everything Linux ever". Regardless, you may want to make some LiveUSBs or LiveCD/DVDs of various distros so that you can play around with them before actually committing to one.

[up][up] Mine did too. That is usually a bad thing. The optimal solution that I came up with is to take it apart and clean the insides.

[up][up][up] Linux Mint Cinnamon is your best choice. Free, and easy. Works like Windows, too. With a start menu and everything. It works fine assuming you aren't gaming. Oh, and try [up].

Oh, and I'm new here. So hi, Computer Thread.

"Turn the shit off that I don't like" in Windows Eight, but only if you install a third party program to give you the start button back.

And I don't know if it's a virus or not.

As far as Linux gaming is concerned, Ubuntu (and Mint) are probably about as good as you're going to get (especially since that's what Valve is looking to make Steam available for first). Also, WINE can do an at least passable job of making gaming possible. I know it does a good job with Company Of Heroes and Team Fortress 2.

Okay, why does Main.Team Fortress 2 not redirect to VideoGame.Team Fortress 2?
