After introducing a love interest to Kanshi, they go address the semi-pre-established relationship between Keigo and Nemu. I wonder if Miharu is getting something too.

Anyways, what we got was pretty great. Very natural expansion on what all characters involved already had, and despite being a far more serious episode than the norm, still managed to fit some really good gags, like Nemu's additional comment on Wolf's pecs.

Akanebnashi has a Judge Ooka story this week. I've seen other stories with him, (and used them at Toastmasters) but in a much more condensed format.

Earthchild just seem like it going nowhere. Also every chapter filled with exposition doesn't help. And then there the inconsistency problem...

It definitely sounds like the worst idea for a serialization since I started reading.

You can just assume nothing starts in this magazine with an actual plan even a few volumes ahead, so why should we expect a premise like that to hold water indefinitely?

I heard someone say Ayakashi Triangle is moving to the app exclusively?

If so then that seems like an indication of Jump looking for alternate solutions for moderate successes and promising series to not get axed early during the current flagship shortage. Cutthroat competition is good, but it's not helpful to murder too many series that are likely to grow into decent successes.

Marriagetoxin was fun. Was not expecting an LGBT shounen manga.

If it got axed it often mean it not attracting readers or showing any promise, changing the magazine not gonna fix that.

AT changing magazine is more due to the author request rather than not having readers.

The magazine adds new series to a set schedule which makes regular axings practically mandatory.

But Jump has been getting in a pickle with the balance of new versus "veteran" series, where there simultaneously have been too many veterans but also too many veterans set to end, as well as a bunch of moderate successes in the battleground slots to further crowd out newbies. It's an unpredictable timing issue now that Jump is no longer based around the milking model where the ideal is for a series to stretch as long as possible.

And Jump knows well that a series exploding into the top ranks from the getgo is desirable but unrealistic for producing flagships. Kimetsu no Yaiba is pound for pound the best selling manga of all time, but it was only ever a moderate success in its first years. I remember people predicting it would be in the Under 20 club when it started, even calling it "Kimetsu no Cancel". The author having to speed up certain plot points faster than intended.

Jump has been in the position before where the space to compete was way too small for newcomers, but back then it also had lots more firmly established older series to provide the publication itself stability. Now it pretty much has neither, which needs new solutions. Jump can't rely on One Piece forever to hold the ceiling up.

Eh that just the loud Westerners minority speaking and from what I saw, Western fans of WSJ are often wrong about what gonna be a hit and what gonna be axed. Kn Y was pretty well-receive in Japan when it came out, it even have early CP. And the fact that Kn Y was a moderate hit with good rating is what keep it in the magazine. The axed series not only aren't moderate hit but their ranking are terrible too (Samurai 8, Red Hood, TPGW,...). Basically the ranking reflect the series potential to grow it fanbase and how much confident Jump have in it which are things Jump looking for. Even the rushed plot point thing is fault since the author interview said that the first editor and the author already planned out the plot of entire series from the beginning.

[up]That feels a bit disingenuous. The fact that there are plenty of series that were popular among Westerners but cut off at the vine among Japanese readers doesn't mean that those series were inherently bad, just that they were more to Western tastes than Japanese. Digital platforms like Jump+ mean that Western opinions are now monetizable to manga companies just like Japanese opinions, although there are some growing pains. Doesn't mean that the super-domestic appeal was better, or that the culturally-universal appeal is better. It is what it is, and what it is will probable not be clear until this technology becomes more entrenched.

From what I saw about the series that have more Western appeal, those series are often have novelty ideas but horrible execution of said ideas. Western fans simply place to much value on the premier alone that they often ignore the execution of a series. So it not really about taste but rather Japanese and Western fans place emphasis on difference aspect of a series and in this case, Japanese fans have better idea about where to focus. Ideas are cheap, execution is expensive.

The problem with that view is survivorship bias. The only series we get to see blossom and grow are ones that Japanese fans liked, and continued to like for long enough to make a decent-length serialization. If Western fans like it and Japanese fans don't, it's cancelled before it has a chance to grow beyond that first impression.

The one that got axed did got time to blossom though, they just didn't blossom to anything worthwhile. Those series had fundamental issues that the authors failed to address or should have been iron out before serialization. And Western fans just keep praising those series while ignoring the fatal flaws because they often only see the potential rather than the reality. TPGW is a manga about making manga where the writer has no idea what the main focus is, no drama and have no understand how the medium he want to talk about work. Red Hood is an adventure manga that spend too much time not adventuring, Samurai 8 rely too much on exposition and world building without making the readers engage first. Like I said, it not that Western fans and Japanese fans have different taste but rather Western fans just care too much about the premier that they willingly ignore the flaws of those series. "It get good after X chapter" is not a good sale pitch.

Got around to reading Goodbye Eri, it was a great one shot and a fantastic story. I love how much was left to interpretation.

I also read the final chapter of Magu-Chan God of Destruction, it was beautifully bittersweet.

Fujimoto really has a knack for showing the ugliest and most beautiful sides of humanity simultaneously. I might have liked this one even more than Look Back.

I don't think the Japanese/foreign divide in some series' reception is as much about taste as format. In Japan, new series in Weekly Shonen Jump primarily have to get readers and positive feedback from within the established, paying reader base. People reading in English and some other languages can get into a new series for free, even if they're not reading anything else in the magazine—not coincidentally, that's how Jump+ works.

AT changing magazine is more due to the author request rather than not having readers.
There are many possible reasons for the magazine change—seeking a new audience, a better schedule, looser content/editor restrictions—and it's impossible to tell which was most important.

In any case, it's off to a good start. The first new chapter got about a million views in its first 24 hours. That's similar to Mato Seihei no Slave and Dandadan, and about a third of Spy x Family or Kaiju #8. The series in total has about 6 million views in its first 8 days, though that's spread over 89 free chapters.
