Well it is more action heavy so the boredom could be offset by good animation and presumably quicker pacing.

The anime can fix the boredom, but I’m not sure it can fix the writing…

This week’s Oricon top is unsurprisingly dominated by Jujutsu Kaisen, but it’s worth noting that even the other Jump series seemingly had a sales boost in its wake (or Demon Slayer’s wake I guess).

  • Jujutsu Kaisen 14 − 637k
  • My Hero Academia 29 − 429k (pretty sure it’s the series’ biggest launch so far)
  • Chainsawman 10 − 300k
  • One Punch Man 23 (Tonari no Young Jump) − 274k
  • Spy × Family 6 (Jump +) − 190k (537k last week)
  • Dr. Stone 19 − 143k
  • Black Clover 27 − 131k
  • Boruto 13 − 96k
  • Kinnikuman 73 − 71k
  • Bokuben 20 − 58k
  • Mashle 4 − 54k
  • Kaijû 8 1 (Jump +) − 46k (in its… fourth week I think?)

Chainsawman’s previous volumes also had a slight boost, probably due to the anime announcement.

[up] One Punch Man is on Tonari no Young Jump not Jump +. You missed Yozakura Family which sold 21k copies (It is the first time it has been on Oricon).

Also it isn't really a sales boost, all the (Weekly shonen jump at least) series had a seven day first week, which hasn't happened for sometime (I guess? Have to check) though Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw did receive boosts independent of that (JJK anime and Chainsaw man ending and anime announcement). Mashle also had some promotion with Tanjiro's voice actor too.

@Hard-Boiled Cop & Dolphin: So these humans can fight underwater just fine. Whatever's up with Samejima, he'll probably need it to keep pace.

@High-School Family: I love the meme that this is Shonen Jump's sports manga now. I think this is the first chapter where Kotaro was basically the only family member present.

@Sakamoto Days: I love when a series uses a Jojo-style "[defeated villain]: retired" caption to emphasize a character being alive doesn't mean we'll see them again.

So, Our Blood Oath is confirmed to be ending this week. Well, not really surprised, I mean the art and concept was decent but man, the execution was all over the place.

It and Moriking were the most obvious "Gone next round." series. Probably would have happened a month ago if the first volume came out earlier. With those two and Agravity Boys gone, nothing sticks out as particularly likely to go. But even aside from the upcoming four, we've got three series that haven't had a tankobon release.

The Elusive Samurai is… interesting. It has a likeable protagonist and deliciously old school art, but the writing could use some subtlety.

"He’s good at running away, but that’s what will make him a hero! Get it? He’ll be a hero! We’ll be sure to drill that in your brain so don’t you forget it! He’ll be a hero that runs away and hides! A h-e-r-o! Is that clear enough?"

Now the mid-chapter twist was admittedly effective, but the comedy bits after that felt really misplaced… So yeah, some potential, but much room to improve. At least it feels fresh.

Also, is the samurai named "Ashikaga Takauji" or "Takauji Ashikaga"? The translation can’t seem to make up its mind…

Yeah Elusive Samurai was a bit whacked in both good and bad ways, but I’m interested enough to see how it pans out.

[up][up]

It should be "Takauji Ashikaga" in Western name order. Ashikaga is his family name as he overthrew the shogunate to found his own.

Until today we only had the Japanese title "Nigejozu no Wakagimi", as even Viz's "upcoming series" alert made no mention of the title "The Elusive Samurai". I don't mind translating or even changing the title, as the localizer seem very in touch with the series' creators, but Hojo isn't really a samurai is he? It's like Samurai X all over again.

He’s good at running away, but that’s what will make him a hero!
It is an interesting way to have a Historical Domain Character that isn't an awful person by modern standards. The real Hojo Takatoki was apparently almost only known for not dying, so they seem to be going for The Greatest Story Never Told angle.

Now the mid-chapter twist was admittedly effective, but the comedy bits after that felt really misplaced...
I don't expect the rest of the series to be as dark as that got, but they didn't have to switch back to outright comedy so hard.

Also, is the samurai named "Ashikaga Takauji" or "Takauji Ashikaga"? The translation can’t seem to make up its mind…
The whole chapter uses surname->given name order, except his name on page 30. (Though it's weird how often he's referred to by given name.)

Also, the series page screws up and says the hero is Hojo Takatoki. The protagonist is named "Tokiyuki", and Takatoki is his father.

Blood Oath is talking about how the vampire supremacist needs to make amends to the person he's hurt most...and then just completely forgets about the human kid who got eaten by her friend? And even with the vampire kid it acts like she just got super thirsty and wasn't driven to eat her friend. Even if you're not talking a big game about vampire-human coexistence, that feels like a thing that should come up.

Anyway, dunno much at all about Japanese history but the new thing has the Assassination Classroom guy's name on it so I'm ready to see what's up.

Alright, thanks for the clarifications.

…Speaking of title, I actually find the Spanish title ("Héroe Fugitivo") much better.

[up] Huh, the Neuro and AC author, huh… didn’t know he had that much of a resumé. That means fan expectations will be high. =[

Really like the 1st chapter of Elusive Samurai. Considering its Matsui, his eccentric style is already showing itself from early on. Also, with Yorishige talking about bokke and tsukkomi, I'm guessing there's going to be some anachronistic elements at least from it's jokes.

The Viz translator of Elusive Samurai is pretty bad. He the one who translated Kn Y early part which probably the worst translated version among the 3 versions Kn Y have.

E.T technically is a Isekai movie

@Sakamoto Days: This manga's been working so far as a "short-form" kind of action series, so I wonder if the fights or story arcs will end up getting longer like in most weekly manga.

@Hard-Boiled Cop & Dolphin: Umi signalling for help is better than failing miserably on her own, but I'm hope she does something effectual herself.

@High School Family: It may not have been worth most of the chapter to set it up, but the moronic cycle of senior deference was a good bit.

Our Blood Oath is a series I'm confused that the editors OK'd. The series barely presented a coherent narrative, chapters were wasted on characters that were unimportant and then also didn't even take the opportunity to at least flesh out the brothers much, and it did basically nothing with the seemingly thematic monsters of the week.

If this series had any serious planning put into it then I suspect it was almost only the end-goal stuff, which you just can't do. I'm not sure I can blame the author. It feels like this is more the fault of the editors.

Anyways, I'm really enjoying Sakamoto Days so far, and I like that it's not only Sakamoto that gets to be a badass. It has a lot of potential and is basically a shounen John Wick family man.

Elusive Samurai is promising. I suppose the brutal and sudden mid-chapter twist comes from a cultural perspective: most of the Japanese audience probably already knows the general story of the historical figure.

I'm getting some Reigen vibes from the Elusive Samurai mentor priest guy. Depending on how far they can take the unique premise without turning the manga into straight shonen battles, this could be good.
