Out of curiosity:

Have you ever read (and liked) an old fanfic? As in, from the early nineties, or even older? (Note: The Aeneid and the like don't count.)

I was reading old fanfics (as in, those that date to the mid-to-late 90s) when they were still new.

I could never get into With Strings Attached. Might be because whenever I try to read it I end up having to do something else. I need to read it though.

I haven't read any pre-nineties fanfiction. Most of it probably wouldn't be on the internet [would it? It wasn't originally uploaded, but now that I think about it people probably would scan fanzines and such], so it'd be harder to find, I suppose.

Know of any links?

The oldest fanfics I both liked and found the year when they were written are the following three. Although, they are from mid-to-late nineties...

  • Rhyme and Reason by Questy. Finished in 1995. On one end, we have a race against time to find four missing friends, with the clues hidden all over the city and some of them booby-trapped. On the other end, we have said four friends trying to get out of a maze of deathtraps, the kind that would look well in a Saw movie. There are very few fanfics that thrilled me that much. The villain might be questionable (as in, "How is that even possible?"), but the situation keeps the characters tense in such a way that good part of it can be felt by the reader.

  • Fly to the Light by Matt Plotecher. Finished in 1997. There was more from the same author, a year or two before, like Trite Fright Night (under the same link), but this is the first "serious" work. A tale of detectives, a missing dad, Yakuza and a clan heirloom. This and the sequels are called "Noir series", and I think the name is well-deserved. The stories show that the world is not all sunshine and friendship, so it's necessary to earn the Happy End. And boy, doesn't it taste sweet when you do.

  • Under The Bridge by John Nowak. Finished in 1998. It has Revenge, !!Science!! (The Research was Done, and very well I might add), a healthy dose of Hilarity, Dramatic Revelations, two sequels and a Russian translation. How many fanfics do you know that were good enough to be translated? Very close to being my favourite fanfic - and it was, at one point, but I found a few better ones. The part I liked the most is how the story is both serious and funny; even in the middle of a dramatic moment the jokes don't look out of place.

There was some Ranma fanfiction that might have been older, but I'm not sure of the year.

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.

I've read American Kitsune. I think that's an old fanfiction.

Pretty good, gets wonky around the eighth and ninth chapters but soon switches out and was a little enjoyable crossover treat.
