People have called out on many lazy reviewers comparing any hard game with Dark Souls.

Uh, people are complaining about Dark Souls. Where do you think the "Git gud" meme came from? Dark Souls has a massively toxic fandom wherein the very admission that you have difficulty with the game means you're a shitty garbage person who has no business playing video games and should find a different hobby and/or kill yourself.

And that fandom likes to spill over into other games. "Pfft, you think this is hard? Loser. You wouldn't last five seconds in Dark Souls. Now that's a REAL game!" Dark Souls has become gamers' favorite dick-measuring contest.

And man, the arguments over a proposed Easy Mode for Dark Souls 3 were legendary in their horribleness. The very idea that someone would desecrate the sacred difficulty of Dark Souls by giving the game an Easy Mode was seen as a slight against man and god.

Wait people were actually angry about Cuphead being difficult? I just saw people making jokes about the one reviewer who said it was to difficult but clearly doesn’t actually play games and was to prideful to admit that their lack of expeirance was an issue and have someone else do the review.

I did see one article that claimed Cuphead and other hard games were "fetishising skill".

I think that the big Cuphead controversy was an article discussing how the cartoons that Cuphead draws inspiration for were blatantly racist. Certain people misinterpreted this article as accusing Cuphead of being a racist game. I don't know if Jim has done a video on that controversy though.

I dunno, I always thought the dark souls memes were from people that were proud of the difficulty rather than making fun it. Not my fault I don't keep up with the memes lol.

As someone who's been in the Souls fandom for years I've actually barely ever run into the unironic "lel get gud scrub" crowd. I don't doubt they exist, though.

I think a lot of people in the fandom are tired of the difficulty meme because it gives people the wrong impression about what the games are about.

Like, I wouldn't even say Dark Souls is flat out way more difficult than the average (though that being said I still have yet to beat the first one), it just refuses to give players breathing room in ways other games usually do. If you make a mistake in DS you will end up paying for it.

x6 He admitted that he was bad though. And someone else did the review probably because they wanted someone who could play the game to review it.

It should be noted that Dean Takahashi, the reviewer who failed at Cuphead, did have to amend a review criticizing the difficulty of Mass Effect because he forgot to use talent points. So the whole criticism that "journalist should be able to play the game so as to not give inaccurate review" does have some leg. So here's a second video from Game Theory, debating the question whether or not video game journalist should be required to be good at game

I've only ever actually played one Dark Souls game and I didn't like it very much. The mechanic where every time you die, it permanently reduces your HP meter to make future attempts harder rubbed me the wrong way. It's a Fake Difficulty mechanic that makes the learning curve pointlessly steeper than it needs to be.

I'd probably have liked it a lot more without that stupid mechanic.
