Oh, you're right. I misinterpreted that line. I thought Ryuk was saying he'd drop the Note on the ground if Trump didn't take it, but what he was saying was that if Trump took it and died, one of his people would find it and be able to use it. It was a bit of an incentive to take the bullet. But Trump decided against it, so Ryuk took the note back with him.

....No. From what I can tell, he didn't deliberately save anyone with his actions.

We already discussed that it has to be a purposeful act for the Shinigami dies if they save the life of a human thing.

Otherwise, if they happened to kill a rapist, they'd die because doing so would save the lives of a lot of young women.

I think it also has to be that the person is already meant to die as well.

No it just has to be done with the intention of lengthening another specific human's life. They can kill random people whenever and it does not matter if they results in other people's life spans extending, so long as it was not done with that purpose in mind.

The Shinigami King probably doesn't follow the same rules that the other shinigami follow, considering he makes the rules. The King might actually be The Grim Reaper. That might be why he adds a law to prevent the Death Note being used in a non-death fashion beyond Jerkass Gods; its antithetical to something that is Death personified.

I mean we can't know for sure.

All we know is that he didn't do anything when Light was rampaging for five years while using the note for his own ends, but when Minoru basically gets everything he wants without writing a single letter in it, the King immediately arranges for his death.

Did Ryuk learn about the rules before he ended his contract with Minoru or after? I can't quite recall.

The Shinigami King presumably was pissed that one of his Notes was made into a commodity.

He's fine with it being used as a murder weapon since that's its whole point.

That just really sucks.

I find it hilarious that Minoru's efforts angered all the wrong people.

Honestly, the only smart thing to do with a Death Note is to burn the damn thing.

Do they just keep printing more in the Shinigami world? Or does the Note just magically replenish new pages? Depending on the answer burning the thing wouldn't work either.

Burning it won't mean one less Note in existence forever. I get the feeling the King can just make more of them.

Burning it is smart since there's ultimately nothing good that can come from a human owning one. Ryuk outright warns Light in the first chapter that using the Note causes misery for its owner.

But that's the thing.

USING the note causes misery.

Minoru never did that....and died quickly and with no pain....

....huh.

The funny thing is that the Shinigami King isn't above a little bribery himself concerning the Notes. He doesn't particularly like making replacement Notes, especially after Ryuk's bullshit, but he'll do it in exchange for two apples.

Shinigami King creates a rule that if you eat it you die....twice.

"What the...? A human ate it? Why would they...? WTF is wrong with this species?"

Obviously this means you kill him before he finds out. Bend the power of death itself to kill even the King and take his place.
