My read of Carla is that it's something of a defense mechanism. She proudly displays herself as an aggravating butthole (without ever engaging in genuinely harmful actions and behaviors ala Ruth or Mike) and then latches onto the people who put up with her at her seeming worst because she knows that they won't turn on her. If she acts like an annoying pest all the time then people will hate her for that, rather than having to worry about putting up with transphobia. She knows she's hated and she wears it like a badge.

And yeah, that kinda sums it up. Ruth's feelings for Billie have been super complicated for a while now, and now that she's on medication and actually feeling somewhat stable, she wants to see her again, if only to see what she feels now.

I’m glad that Speed Racer has finally started getting the recognition it deserves. That movie rules.
