[up][up] Considering it takes place before Origins we’re not even getting any actual Assassin’s this time.

[up] Well we’ll be taking over 28 city states at least though it’s not a permanent conquering so we can work for both sides whenever we want.

Are they at least bringing back the good combat from Syndicate?

See, I'm wary of that coz I can see that turning into tedium. That there's 5 or 6 you do for story reasons, and the rest are there because they are icons on the map and not because there's plot for each one of them.

Well it’s more actionized due to being a full on RPG.

Now we got special attacks like the Sparta Kick.

[up][up] Eh it Syndicate’s combat wasn’t very good. Too button mashey & weightless.

[up] Yeah that is a big worry there.

Like, Origin did a lot right, from a gameplay point of view, to revive the franchise, but it still skirted close to that line of "Too much tedium (The forts, the hidden treasures, the Ptolemy statues, etc...)" that old AC games have. But I think the huge ammount of sidequest (Even if many were sort of repetitive) that were all fully voiced helped fix that.

And hearing Odyssey's map is 1.5 times bigger, that worries me. Will the game have the content to support it? Or are we going back to the "Random task bloat" that played a huge role in the downfall of the franchise. Where the games became less about Assassinating and their plots and more and more bloated with random side events that didn't really add anything to the game. I don't want Odyssey to slip back into being what Jim Sterling appropriately calls Big Empty Sandboxes.

It’s also going full Mass Effect with its quests & side quests by having dialogue wheels.

It’s the most RPG installment yet.

The 1.5x the map is a misleading marketing statement. The reason that it's 1.5 times the size of Origins is because a huge portion of the map is the Mediterranean Sea. They have a big focus on naval combat this time around.

Lets just hope it avoids Black Flags MASSIVE AMOUNT OF COLLECTABLES on tiny islands. Cos that got old fast.

Territory mechanics in games are a bit weird... especially if it expects you to go solve it personally each time - from San Andreas onwards I always felt "What's the point in having a gang if I have to do all the leg work myself?!"

Surely if you could upgrade troops or garrison people? They seem to have acknowledged that "grind" isn't fun, hence the removal of obvious icons. There's playing the game and then there's doing repetitive activities that break the flow.

Have an auto-resolve, or some sort of option to send your own mercenaries. Don't make me micro-manage everything. Taking over a territory FINE. Defending it when there's a huge map, or I'm having fun exploring - that is a big no no.

It's not new to the franchise. Brotherhood had "I've recruited all those Assassins but Ezio still needs conquer every Templar outposts solo" and Black Flag had "I've got this flotilla but Jackdaw has to do all the missions"

Didn't have that issue in Origins myself.

If anything above ground ruins tended to be darker without the torch. It was funny how water generated light.

It was necessary because they hadn't invented underwater torches back then. I'm of the opinion that Bayek is a descendant of Sobek. Natural affinity for water. ;D

@Ghilz - yeah, not new but still aggravating. I get they want you to "play the game" but gameplay that feels like busywork seems to be common. It's padding, of course, but seems to have the opposite effect to the intended.

Hoping they find a different way to handle it, if we are "taking over" regions. Or if it just means we take them over and they don't get reconquered / attacked.

There's a SPOILERISCIOUS video on YT showing a LOT of gameplay. And utterly spoils the Gorgon battle / encounter. I clicked away as I thought they were just showing off gameplay. Nope. But it does show WHAT the gorgon is... or what seems to be causing it.

Non spoilery - combat looks... mental. It's more over the top than Origins. I like the look but AGAIN - I can see why people think this should be a different IP... or maybe same universe but not with the AC tag. It feels a lot more gamey.

But they appear to be embracing the Shadow of Mordor "Because it feels awesome" vibe and it does look very good fun. And the environments are gorgeous.

Heh, AC's never really been anchored in reality, what with "I can break any fall by grabbing a ledge on the way down", the leaps of faith, and "Poison which makes someone go berserk and drop dead 30 seconds later with 100% efficiency"

Sparta Kicking people doesn't really look weirder to me.

I keep hearing that. Is the Sparta Kick a meme or something?

I think the Sparta Kick is a bit more conspicious, though, especially since it seems to be a common finisher.

Personally, I'm worried about the game coming out so soon after Origins. Yes, I know it was partially developed while Origins was still being worked on, but going back to that once a year release cycle will not end well.

And this is coming from someone who liked every mainline installment in the franchise aside from Unity.

Sparta Kick might refer to the way the Persian ambassadors are kicked down a well in the film 300. It is also the source of the better known meme "THIS! IS! SPARTA!", not to be confused with "I'm Spartacus!" which is an entirely different meme from an entirely different film.

And it's been turned into a power attack in the game which blends quite well into this.

Apparently AC is taking a break for 2019 though, so it'll be interesting if this 2 AC games within a year of each other will work. I know people felt burned out with yearly releases, but hopefully this will satisfy the people who got Origins, finished it and then wanted more.

So far it seems to be riding the wave well, as just enough time has passed since the DL Cs.

I see a lot of complaints that Origins portrays murdering Caesar as a good thing even though he was a good ruler and Brutus was a jerk. But I assume everyone thinking Caesar was good and Brutus was evil is just Templar propaganda.

It doesn’t make for an interesting story to rob Caesar of all the complexity he had though.

Plus it kinda shifts the whole thing into more simple black & white morality.
