I can't think of a good example offhand, but this seems like a fairly easy trope to illustrate. Anyone got any ideas?

If someone can get some screencaps from T2 showing the tire rolling out of the wreckage of the semi after the culvert chase, I think that'd work well enough.

T2 immediately popped into my mind when i looked at the link

We probably don't need all of these panels, but let's see what everyone thinks.

Niiice. Maybe cut one of the actual wheel panel, two looks redundant.

Looks good, and you can cut the last panel.

Not "bad"... but... (yes, that's not exactly a compliment)

I'm partial to something where the free wheel is rolling sideways relative to the camera. Typical cartoon rendition is car charges offscreen to the right, BOOM, then a loose wheel goes bouncing back into panel right to left.

I took out the bottom panel of the T2 example, and made a pic from the Garfield example on the page; the panels are kinda small, but I think they're clear enough (the fuzziness was in the source pic).

I like the Garfield comic better.

[up] I'm leaning toward that one, myself.

The Garfield example is clearer — but the TF 2 pic has the advantage of being closer to the troper as written: roller skates are rather atypical. Primarily we're talking about a motor vehicle.

I don't think that's a concern. Or if it is, it's much less important than clarity.

The Garfield one works very nicely in the depictive department. Probably even just the two panels by itself (the offscreen crash and bouncing wheel) — I really hate triangular three-panel arrangements because it just screams "cut out a panel to avoid using the whole strip".

[up] I think stacking those panels vertically would look a lot more awkward than having them arranged as they are. Also, I think the big panel's necessary for setup.

Since this is lagging and the Garfield pic's got more overall support, it's up, potholed, and tagged, and the first T2 pic is added to its example on the page.
