Lesse... this is just off the top of my head, so I know there are a bunch missing, but...

  • Jack Kirby: paying the obligatory tribute to the king of comics. Jolly Jack was not only a phenomenal artist, but he put out pages at a pace that has rarely been equalled. He had his flaws, for sure- his faces were often... uh... something..?, but the impossible energy roaring out of his panels cannot be denied.

  • Osamu Tezuka: and, of course, paying the obligatory tribute to the god of manga. Much like Kirby, his pages burst with energy, frenetic action dragging your eyes through the pages at a ridiculous clip until you get spat out at the end of the story, a bit breathless from the ride and grinning from the excitement. Fantastic stuff.

  • Sergio Aragones: One of the usual gang of idiots and instrumental in the creator-owned comics revolution, Sergio has one of the most distinctive styles in comics today. And also one of the most crowded tongue. Seriously, the man does crowd scenes like almost no-one else (with the possible exception of the guy who does Where's Waldo). Sergio is the reigning grandmaster of the visual gag and the fastest cartoonist on the planet. Wild, cartoony, intricately detailed and just plain fun.

  • Stan Sakai: Another independent, Stan is a great artist and a superb letterer- he does the lettering for Groo The Wanderer, one of Sergio's projects. Of his own stuff, of course, there's Usagi Yojimbo. Mostly presented in black and white, Stan's art is spare, understated and elegant, without a single line out of place... and yet still manages to give a strong sense of solidity. Political intrigue, war, love, honour, betrayal, revenge, and a frankly startling amount of information about feudal Japan that you'll find yourself learning almost involuntarily, all starring a cartoon bunny with his ears in a samurai topknot.

  • Alan Davis: my pick for one of my very favourite artists at Marvel, I think- to put it simply (and a bit dumbly tongue), the art is just so very, very pretty. For some reason, his rendering of the Phoenix flare is my absolute favourite.

I'm gonna add a couple more names to my list.

John Stanley, Basil Wolverton, Al Jaffee, Mort Drucker and Paul Coker, Jr. ..if Mad counts, that is.

And yes, Tezuka would be there, too.

Juanjo Guarnido is probably the most skilled artist in western comics I have seen in years. He was a former animator, and it shows.

Adam Hughes, Darwyn Cooke, Frank Cho (with some reservations), 70's era Neal Adams, and...lots more I can't think of off the top of my head...
