...Unless Nintendo bails them out guess that's it for the better Mario RPG series.

What's likely going to happen is Nintendo will snatch up the devlopers and some of the concept of what was the next M&L game and get it together from there.

And if I had to guess, the HD wall was ended up breaking them.

Sucks for the devs, but at least Nintendo might stop feeling compelled to shaft Paper Mario if Mario and Luigi is no more.

I'm fairly certain Color Splash's sales (Or lack thereof) put a kibosh on that sub-series ever seeing the light of day again.

I'd hope Nintendo would understand that people want an old-style Paper Mario, not none at all. They didn't kill Metroid after Other M and Federation Force, after all.

Well, there goes any chance of getting a Partners in Time remake...

Partners in Time wasn't much fun anyway.

[up] It's actually my personal favorite, if mostly due to the darker story, and it's problems could have been ironed out with a remake. It certainly needed one more than Bowser's Inside Story did, at least.

REDIT: Former Game Informer senior editor Imran Khan: a source told him Nintendo axed all future 3DS plans because the BiS remake did badly.

[up] No shit it did bad. It came out right at the end of the 3DS' life cycle, and nobody was asking for a remake of BIS since the game was good enough as is and already backwards compatible with the 3DS.

I still don't understand why they skipped remaking Partners in Time. Did they think a BIS remake would sell better?

[up][up] Actually, yes, they mentioned in an interview that was exactly why they skipped Partners in Time, along with Fawful being very popular in the West: https://www.gameinformer.com/interview/2019/01/14/alphadream-on-remaking-bowsers-inside-story-and-how-mario-luigi-could-possibly

Bi S sold much more than Pi T on the DS and they likely expected it to at least do decently well.

[up][up][up][up] Thing is, at least until the October 2018 financial meeting, Nintendo was basically insisting they would not kill off the 3DS. They likely had plans to squeeze as much out of it as they could. If I remember correctly, the January 2019 financial meeting had no mention of the 3DS, outside of the recently released Bi S remake, Wario Ware Gold, and the then upcoming, and final 3DS first party game, port of Kirby's Epic Yarn.

Partners in Time could have used a remake, but I'm not sure if they could address its two biggest flaws (linear nature and Bros. Items) without completely changing the game. Bowser's Inside Story definitely didn't need one, though. It stands up fine as-is, and its only flaws wouldn't get fixed in a remake anyway.

The BIS remake doesn't even change anything other than replacing the art style and adding in a Minion Quest mode, does it?

List of changes.

A bunch of them are minor things.

They also went in the wrong direction with Paper Jam, too, NSMB-ifying it with generic environments and no OCs, which is probably one of the main reasons why that game failed.

I don't know who thought 3DS games in 2019 was a good idea. They were barely holding on in 2017.

Yeah, I don't see anything on that list justifying a remake.

I'm not too broken-up about the bankruptcy, the series peaked with BIS and was on the decline ever since (remakes included).

@CookingCat: Oh, neat.

Wait, then why couldn't they remake Pi T and give it a Minion Quest-style side mode where you play as Fawful trying to build an army to take over the Mushroom Kingdom with and market the game based off that? It's been ages since I played Bi S, but Fawful had to have more help than just Midbus at the beginning of the game, right?

[up][up] Dream Team was still good, and I actually like it better than BIS, but Paper Jam was the definitely the start of a decline.

[up][up][up][up] The 3DS sold 200 thousand hardware and 1.5 million software units during the first three months of this fiscal year (April thru June 2019), sold 2.5 million hardware and 13.25 million software during FY 2018 (April 2018 thru March 2019).note

So, yeah, Nintendo is still trying to get as much as they can out of the 3DS and likely would have brought more new software if Bi S's sales didn't suck.

For 2017, it makes sense they would at least continue because no one was quite sure how the Switch was going to do, and Nintendo would need backup in the form of the 3DS.

Dream Team wasn't bad but I consider it a step down from BIS and when the cracks really began to show. The final battles with Antasma and Dreamy Bowser were pretty awesome though.

But yes, Paper Jam is when the mild decline turned into a steep cliff drop.

Hey, Dream Team was The Neverending Game. Rumor has it no one has actually beaten it, and if they got close new levels were spontaneously generated to keep the player going. Forever. So it's got that going for it.
