Well, SNK characters had been in a few crossovers in the last few years, so who knows?

SNK tends to be all about crossovers these days, and have been getting increasingly bold about it in the last few years. I'm expecting at least one guest crossover team of some kind, even if it doesn't turn out to be Street Fighter.

So, if it's Street Fighter, which would be your three character picks? Or for Tekken?

What I want for a Street Fighter team: Alex, Menat, and Laura.

What we're likely getting: Ryu, Chun-Li, and Luke.

What I want for a Tekken team: King, Leroy, and Roger.

What we're likely getting: Jin, Xiaoyu, and Kazuya.

Help me. I can't get it out of my head.

Yeah, the most likely team if we get a street fighter specific team is Ryu, Chun and Luke: the classic characters and the new hotness.

It wouldn’t be my favorite SF team (I really want Juri and Kim in the same game), and there are characters I think would be cooler in the KOF system, but those are the most likely ones.

That said - leaks aside - I’m still pulling for a “guest” team that’s just, like, one guest from a variety of things SNK has done collabs with in the past rather than a full team of just one series, a la the Pachinko team in XIV. So, like, Ryu, Baiken and Skullomania or something.

A Street Fighter team without Ryu and/or Chun-Li is rather unlikely. Ryu himself is practically guaranteed if they do such a team.

In a surprise move, KOFAS is getting a second Tekken collab, further details have to be announced but Nina in both her T7 and Bride versions is part of this new batch and the teaser image includes a poorly hidden Devil Jin silouhette.

Would be nice if they brought back and even upgrade some of the old Tekken fighters I guess, because I'm a big Jin main nowadays. But I know the rates are going to suck.

Shit, I haven't been here in a while. Okay, so I'm just gonna interrupt to ask a question and then bugger off again, don't mind me. Ahem...

HOW THE HELL DO YOU BEAT THE CPU IN OLD SCHOOL KOF GAMES??

Because I'm at a complete loss. I've been playing XV for 3 weeks and it's awesome, and so I picked up the Orochi Saga collection off the PS store to rekindle my affection for the series. I swear I used to be able to beat '97 and '98 when I was a kid, but I've been trying and I can't get anywhere with literally any of the 4 games in the collection. Either the AI in the collection reads your inputs way more than I remember, or I've completely forgot how to play the games after 20 odd years.

I'm not even gonna bother to attempt to beat '94 and '95 without an emulator with savestates, the AI reads everything you do in those games and I do not have the patience to waste literal days trying to beat Rugal without save scumming. And '96 has Goenitz so I doubt I'll be clearing that any time this decade either. But I'd really like to be able to reliably beat the AI in '97 and '98 at least.

Oh yeah, and the difficulty is set to 1. It's on the easiest setting and I still can't get past the 5th match (yeah, I'm not even talking about how to beat Orochi here, I lose the will to live before I even reach him.) The CPU blocks 80% of everything I throw at it and responds to whiffs and jump ins instantaneously. And everything just feels so sluggish, like all my inputs are on a half second delay. I know I've been spoiled by modern Kof. Fighting games in general are way easier nowadays since they're not trying to take your quarters and they feel more fluid and responsive. Also the CPU actually lets you hit it with raw supers.

This is gonna turn into a wall of text if I don't shut up, so TL:DR: I suck at old Kof now, need some tips for how to get around the CPU's ability to block everything I do and respond instantly even on the easiest settings. AI breakers would be nice. I'm most used to using Iori, I usually team him with Kyo and Yashiro. I have basically zero success with any other characters. I used to play the New Faces team a lot as a kid, but Shermie and Chris can't take down anybody now unless I get really lucky and the CPU just decides to eat dropkicks to the face.

And yes, I know, I suck. You don't have to bother telling me.

Can't think of anything witty, so have this instead...

Dude the CPU in old SNK games could be BRUTAL. Even on difficulty level 1 I struggle lol.

The orochi saga has notable input lag which makes it feel a bit stiff but nah you're right, the AI on those games CHEATS, especially 94 good lord. That said I notice that heidern is a bit of an AI killer cause due to the way they respond to charge moves his projectile lands more frequently compared to others and even Rugal can be beaten by sorta just spamming it over and over. I did manage to beat 94/95/96/97 with team Ikari, but beating Goenitz with Fatal Fury team took me like 2 hours, ugh. The games are just hella hard though I think 96/97's AI is easier than 94/95.

Alisa's T7 outfit always looked dumb to me. And I'm kinda sad none of the other regular Jins got buffed in some way. But hey, Devil Jin is pretty neat!

[up][up][up] Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the input lag that's throwing off all my instincts. The timing on jump kicks especially feels really weird, and the distance on normal jumps is so much shorter than what I've got used to. Everything feels like I need to think about what I'm doing a couple of seconds before I actually do it, rather than just fight on instinct and reaction like I usually do.

I did finally beat '97 last night after an hour and a half. I ended up going back to the New Faces team and remembered the tactic that I probably used to beat the game the first time on my friend's Neo Geo: spam the absolute shit out of Shermie's dropkick. That and abusing her HCF+P throw off of jump ins, which for some reason the CPU basically never counters. Orochi beat me once, then he proceeded to eat dropkicks to the face got taken down with me getting hit twice.

Yeah, the CPU in the early games is really weird. I was having trouble with stage 5 because it kept putting me against the Japan team, and Kyo's AI reads the fuck out of your inputs more than any other opponent. But gratuitous dropkick spam is the way forward.

Now I just need to figure out how to win as the rest of the cast...

Watching the retrospective...again.

  • They had only 2 years to get 14 done, 4 designers, 8 programmers, and they had to make their own engine?
  • The graphics didn't bother me, but damn, they had to work at them.
  • 20 years later after saying they wanted a game with like 40-50 characters, Oda got his dream wish, yeah he went "if we're coming back, we have to go to back or go home," and made 48 characters and 2 bosses from SCRATCH.
  • Okay, fair, I think XV and XIV has supers that were cool and lame, but yeah, thinking back to how they've had 5 supers for each characters, I can forgive the lamer ones. 50 characters plus 5 supers, that's like 250 animations, hot damn.
  • DO people like Robert's old look or his new look?
  • The new KOF Characters Are Good, You're all Just Mean segment. Yeah, I think new fans would agree more than older ones on that take. Xanadu's the main exception for him, but I like him.
  • Kim makes his criminals suffer, Luong makes Kim uncomfortable, karma.
  • I didn't know people hated Team South America was basically Team Brazil.
  • I want a new Fatal Fury team to shatter expectations now.
  • I'm really torn on if the next KOF game should be a new storyline or make a definitive to the Verse Saga. Making the three part installments as DLC with new story campaigns is a nice idea though.

  • Tekken collab chat
  • Survey for "which IP do we want to collab with in the future" results in pic related
  • Stance swap showcase
  • Summer Mary event with Hwoarang will be added for the collaboration
  • "Boss showdown" game mode where you will fight an enemy (Devil Jin) for different rewards, you can also apply penalties to yourself which will give you higher rewards
  • New badges added for the Tekken collab
  • There will be new collabs in the future
  • MK is a no-go at the moment because "If we can't use fatalities, what is the point?"

So, in a recent interview Oda said they are interested in a new crossover with Capcom but they haven't approached them in any serious capacity to start negotiations about it. The commemorative art they released at EVO was sort of a test to test the waters and see if people were interested in such a crossover.

Assuming he isn't lying to our faces, then this completely debunks the 4chan "leak" since there's no way they would get permission for an SF Team in 2023.

MK is a no-go at the moment because "If we can't use fatalities, what is the point?"

It's really a shame. MK's style would probably cross over extremely well with the gameplay styles of other traditional fighters like KOF and Street Fighter, imo.

Buuuuut the fatalities have always been the sticking point. You could add fatal moves to the non-MK characters (or something similar) for the sake of the crossover, but that only really works sometimes, if it doesn't work it ends up really bad, and most companies wouldn't do it anyway.

Or you could just drop the fatalities (or, say, reinterpret them as supers) and focus on just bringing the characters together, but as the quote says: without the fatalities, are they really MK characters?

The official KOF character database was updated and includes all the characters up to XV plus the Maximum Impact cast. There are interesting things to be gleaned from it:

  • Kusanagi is officially considered a NESTS clone and distinct from his 03 appearance as a Yata mirror illusion
  • They're sticking with Krohnen being a weird guy with googles that appeared from nowhere and might be related to NESTS
  • Nameless is pointed out to still be NESTS 9999th experiment, raised on Deimos and currently sent to earth
  • Love Heart is not Ret-Gone since she has her own entry but it specifies she's a character from Highlights Entertainment. Similar to Makoto Mizoguchi that is listed as a character from G-Mode in the Maximum Impact entry thus, essentially making her a guest character.
  • XIV's Nightmare Geese is considered a separate character from Geese in the same vein that Rugal is separate from Omega.
  • Out of all the bosses, only Igniz and O. Zero are specifically stated to be dead, weirdly enough.
