Reason and Madness
Saiki Sakura sits on the roof of the school, staring out at Tokyo-3. She'd lived here all her life, but there was still something about this place that fascinated her, that drew her to it.
She sits alone. Normally, she would sit with one or two of her close circle of friends, but today, she had just wanted to somewhere quiet, somewhere peaceful, where she could just sit and think. It seems like she did that so rarely nowadays; she'd forgotten how relaxing it felt to sit up here, all alone with her thoughts.
After a few moments, she finally picks up her lunch and begins to eat.
She smiles, tilting her head back to look up at the sky.

Instead of going to the cafeteria for lunch, Sayu went out to the roof.
As she walked onto the roof, she observed the city around her. It was almost unbelievable that a city that large was rebuild completely in a few years. The skyscrapers towered above her, reaching towards the clouds. Tiny cars traveled on the streets and freeways, and a colorful crowd of people walked on the sidewalks.
She felt a slight wind blow her hair. She wondered what seasons were like. What was snow like? What was sakura flower blooming in the spring like? What was it like to have varying tempratures throughout the months? She might never know personally, since she was born after Second Impact.
She was taking her lunch box to the ledge when she saw another person by the roof.
"Umm...hello?" she said.

Perpetually Disappointed
Akio slid another counter into the board, then waited.
His opponent was cunning. Wily. It would certainly be a battle of wit unt-
"Ha! Four in a row! You loose!"
Akio looked up at his opponent. "Itsuki! You bastard! You're cheating."
"Just admit you lost fair and square, old man."
"Old man? why you bastard..."
"Just cough up the beer next time we're in the bar. I've got work to do."
Akio sighed. The kids'd be arriving today, which meant he had work too but he hadn't had anything to do since arriving. Breaking the habit would be hard.
At very least he should look presentable...
Nah.
He'll wait until they call him over the intercomm.

Reason and Madness
At the sound of another voice, Sakura turns to look, twintails blowing in the breeze. She isn't too annoyed with the destruction of her tranquility; it isn't as if she's the only one who knows about the roof, after all. She can't expect it to stay empty forever.
Smiling at the newcomer, she raises a hand in greeting. "Hi!"
Then she blinks, realizing that she's got a smudge of food on her lower lip. Scrubbing furiously at it, she waves the other girl over.

Finally, Akihiko had made it through the crowd. Now, it was a fairly clear shot to the roof. The roof was where he almost always ate. It was rarely occupied by anyone else, so he wouldn't have to put up with people trying to talk with him. He'd be nice and alone on the roof of the school.
Akihiko began to make his way upstairs.
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."
Sayu walked over, supressed a giggle as the girl whiped a smudge of food off her lip. Sayu sat down next to her, brushed some dirt off her school uniform, and opened her lunchbox.
"Sorry if I'm intruding," she said as she took out a sandwich, wrapped with a pink wash cloth with a cartoon bunny on it, "I was getting bored of the cafeteria, so I decided to come up here for lunch. I had been up here a few times after school, but I never ate up here." She took a bite out of her sandwich. It was composed of fish and lettace.
The urban ambience belong was an unique sound, sort of calming.

Sakura shrugs. "Nah, you aren't intruding or anything. It's okay. I mostly came up here for the view, anyway."
She takes another bite, chewing thoughtfully. "I used to come up here to eat all the time, but lately I haven't come up nearly as often as I'd like." She smiles. "It's really nice up here."
She looks over at Sayu and holds out a hand. "I'm Sakura, by the way. Nice to meet you!"

Akihiko made his way further upstairs, until he found himself at the doorway to the rooftops. At last, he'd find solitude in which to eat. He reached forward and opened the door to the rooftop, stepping through. At first, he didn't notice the two girls at all, rummaging through his backpack to get his food. The second he looked up, and saw them, he froze for a few moments.
Two people had taken his intended spot, both of whom were girls. His confusion slowly gave way to a surprising amount of anger. Why were they here? He wanted to be alone.
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."

When the door opened yet again, Sakura had turned to look. Another person? She hadn't realized that the roof was such a popular place to eat lunch nowadays.
"Hey!" She waves, a friendly smile on her face. "Wanna come sit over here with us? There's space!"
She pats a spot on the ledge next to her. After all, if they're all up here at the same time, why not eat together?

Sayu gave a bright smile and shook her hand, "I'm Sayu. Nice to meet you too."
She took another bite out of her sandwich. She wished she tried to put some ketchup on it back in the cafeteria. It would've been tastier in her opinion. But it was too late now. She took out a chocolate milk carton out of her lunchbox and laid it on the ledge.
She saw Sakura call over someone, a boy their age. She saw him in passing once or twice, but they didn't share a class.
"Is he usually up here too?" she asked.

One of the girls was talking to him now. This was just the kind of thing he'd been trying to avoid. Unnecessary interaction. But, now that these girls had taken his spot, it was becoming more and more necessary to speak to them.
"... My spot," he started. Akihiko's voice was very quiet, though still audible. "You took it."
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."

Sakura glances at Sayu. "I dunno, I haven't really been up here in a while."
At Akihiko's voice, she looks back at him and tilts her head. "Your spot?" She blinks. "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't realize!" She pauses. "Do you want us to move? Because I don't mind sharing." The smile returns. "The more the merrier!"

Oh!" Sayu snatched her milk carton and pushed her lunchbox back to the left, "Sorry. I didn't know I took your spot. I never had lunch up here before...Should I move?"
She took another bite, observing one of the skyscraper in the distance. It was build like a spiral, made to resist earthquakes like any other Japanese building. The overhead sun gleamed on the windows.
The sandwich definitely need ketchup.
"Of course, Satsuki-sama."
Akihiko was silent again. If the girls were willing to move, this would be a little easier then he thought. "Yes. I would like you to move. Go back downstairs."
His speech was stilted, and rather awkward, as if he didn't really know how to say what he was trying to say. He didn't even realize how rude he was being.
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."
Sayu found the boy rather cold.
"Would it satisfy you if we just went over there?" she said, pointing to the ledge opposite of them, "I can do that." He seemed to not be the social type, a loner. Sayu was the opposite, looking for new people to meet.

Sakura blinks. "That was kind of rude. You don't need to be like that, we'll move."
That said, she picks up her lunchbox and stands. "You could have asked nicely, you know." She starts walking for the other side of the roof, to sit as far away from him as possible without actually going downstairs.

Sayu placed her carton in her metal lunchbox, closed it, and followed Sakura to the other side of the roof. She wanted to see what was at that side.
As she passed the boy, she said in a pervasive voice, "You can sit with us, you know?" She wondered what was with him.
"Of course, Satsuki-sama."
Akihiko paused for a second. If they didn't want to go back downstairs, the other side of the roof was the next best thing. Hopefully, he wouldn't have to talk to them, or even interact with them at all, then.
There was another moment's pause. He found himself doing this fairly often around girls, simply staring at them for a few moments as he tried to remember what he'd been going to say.
Akihiko remembered what people were supposed to do in this situation.
"Thank you," he said simply, before sitting down in the spot the girls had previously occupied. He ignored what the one who passed him had asked, and pulled his lunch from his backpack.
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."

"...Sure." She isn't sure what else to say in response as she walks away.
Sakura takes a seat, glancing back at the boy. She's silent for a moment.
"...So do you know who that guy is?" She asks as she reopens her lunch and looks at it. There isn't much left; she'd been almost finished when that weird guy had kicked them out.

Sayu reopened her lunchbox and took out her sandwich. Seeing that Sakura was almost done with her lunch, she gobbled the rest of it. After swallowing it down, she said, "I don't know. I don't know him. I was hoping you knew him."
She picked up her milk carton, opened the whole top part so the carton was shaped like a box, and drank it without a straw. It was a little clumsy, but she prefer that method better.
She laid it down and said, "What's your classroom? I'm in 3B."

Akihiko ate his lunch very slowly and quietly. It wasn't what he'd planned. He'd wanted to be alone up here, but these girls, for whatever reason, had seen fit to ruin that. It was irritating, to say the least.
Occasionally, he'd glance up at them. It was hard not to, they were like some kind of irritating insect to him. Hard to ignore. So he would simply look at them for a few moments with an expression of vague, almost unnoticable annoyance, before going back to eating.
"Oh, dear. The toad, the monkey, and the dog have all screwed up."

Sakura shakes her head, downing the last of her food in one gulp. "I don't think I've ever seen him before."
At least, she'd never noticed him before.
"Anyway, I'm in 3A." She closes her lunchbox and stares out at the scenery, sighing almost inaudibly.

Sayu drank the rest of her milk. It tasted cold and sweet, like chocolate milk was suppose to taste. When she finished it, she crumbled it and pushed a stick of dango out of its wrapper. She preferred to eat just enough to maintain her thin but healthy body.
"Do you have Mr. Saito for Japanese History?"

Sakura nods, setting her lunchbox to the side.
"Yeah. He's kind of useless, though, isn't he? I mean, it seems like all he ever talks about is Second Impact, like nothing ever happened in history. That other stuff's important too, y'know?"
She glances back at Akihito. "...He's looking at us."

Today was the day. Of course, the young candidates didn’t know this. They had no idea what they’d been selected for. NERV had been monitoring them for quite some time, along with all their fellow students. Tokyo-3 required extensive defense, from the threat that had first appeared fourteen years ago, the result of Second Impact.
The Angels.
Today, if all went as planned, then NERV would have its pilots, the Geofront would have its line of defense against the Angels.
The Evangelions.
NERV officers would soon get the order to seek these candidates out and bring them to NERV headquarters. They had little time to lose.
Slowly, the student looked up. There were people, other people his age, all around him. He walked through the crowd of students with a fairly single-minded goal, to simply get to the other side without interruption. He didn’t wish to talk to any of them, to meet a friend, in his mind that was unnecessary. He simply wanted to find a good spot to sit down and eat at.
Alone.
Fukui Akihiko looked away from his fellow students as he moved past them. Looking at them for any length of time could possibly initiate unnecessary interaction, which was simply something he didn’t want to happen. So he remained steadily focused on his goal, the other side of the crowd. His movements were slowly and precise, to avoid bumping into any other students. At most, he just barely would lightly brush against them as he moved. However, partway through his single-minded movements through the crowd, Akihiko couldn’t help but look up. For there was a small amount of curiosity.
He’d heard that the candidates may be brought in today. He didn’t know which of the other students they were, but they were likely here.
Moments later, the young teenager’s curiosity subsided, and he continued on his way.
