My daughter took a 32-color box and proceeded to mark up just about every flat surface she could find.
I bought it for her because I was nostalgic for them, too. That cured me...

New game smell. Used to be, you opened up a video game box, and you'd get the smell of fresh plastic, which was always a reminder of Fun Times Ahead for me. You kinda-ish could get it if you held your nose real close to a GBA cart when you opened it, but it wasn't nearly the same. Console games haven't had it since the N64 days, and the GBA was the last portable holdout.
Of course, I learned years later that said smell was leftover reagents from the process of making the plastic casing for the carts and was likely carcinogenic... but then again, aren't so many childhood joys like that?
