OK, I'm a little over halfway through NANA and it is a soap opera. I'm still interested in it, but on more than one occasion I've found myself saying "OH FOR GOD'S SAKE".

Stop now before it's too late! Don't watch past episode 27!

Too late, already at 29, and I know about key spoilers.

It only gets worse and worse from here.

OK, now I have to find out what you mean by worse and worse.

I don't remember exactly when each event happens. Have you gotten to the scene where Takumi locks Nana in a bathroom until she chooses who to give the baby to, followed by making her have sex with him despite her protests?

OH FOR GOD'S SAKE is right. No I hadn't gotten to that part yet. Jesus.

It is a freaking soap opera.

That's worse than that scene between Inari and Shu in the last episode of Princess Jellyfish.

And it keeps getting worse from there. That's the most despicable single scene, but still... This is why I pretend that nothing past episode 27 happened because the show was really good before then. (not counting the awkward four episodes of flashbacks in a row.)

I finished watching it last night, and I liked it.

I liked the complicated reasons for the choices the characters made. I liked the moral ambiguousness about the reasons for the choices. I liked the missed meetings and chances. I liked that the characters knew there were outside forces making things happen but didn't always know why.

And yes, what Takumi did was bad, way bad. I don't think that it was a gratuitous scene, people do things like that for reasons like that. Not pretty or pleasant at all, but it had the ring of authenticity.

I also liked the way that the people writing the adaptation handled the ending. It ended that version of the story without giving away stuff that hadn't been published yet. And the stuff that was there was open to interpretation.

The implications that anyone with a uterus who doesn't want to have a kid at age 20 isn't a real woman really got to me. Also, it felt like the writers demanded that Nana S make the dumbest possible decision at all times, and completely ignore possibilities like adoption. She made dumb mistakes before, but she generally at least tried. It didn't feel like she tried after the pregnancy thing.

...Anime has writers?

It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

I thought they were more author driven. Huh...

Well, NANA was manga first. But I haven't read it, so I can't say how much it differs. (Other than one scene that happened after the final episode of the anime, that prevents the final episode from happening properly. Kinda.)

I still mostly prefer Shounen series these days. There is just something about them that I love.[lol]

Now watching Moyashimon: Adventures in Agriculture. Silly as all hell, but I'm not quitting. Not anime but boy I can see the referents.
