I wouldn't make that comparison since the games are going for mostly different things.
They would have to re-release 06 to probably finally erase that stain.

I'm reminded of The Keef Crew's video making fun of MVC Infinite, which took a break from taking the piss out of the game to have this exchange (paraphrased).
Character 1: You know, there actually is something solid here. Why are people so down on this game?

In Sonic 06's case, people like Pokecapn were the nails that sealed the coffin. As memes continued to to increase in prominence, Sonic 06 memes because the defining Sonic memes.
In many eyes at the time, 06 was The Thing That Cemented the "Sonic Cycle" as a thing. Once that happened, suddenly literally everything in the franchise that wasn't awful became an exception in pop culture's eyes rather than just... another installment in the franchise.

It doesn't really help that the fandom itself indulges in those memes when they wanna really be down on the things they don't like. Its one thing when its done towards products that are relatively good or just unremarkable like most of the 2010+ games and they just look like whiny babies.
Its another thing when literally everyone is beating down on 06; its gotten to the point where I'm not too shocked by how the fandom has been starting venerate it recently because even attempting to do so before got you laughed out of the room.

Well Kuro pointed out the irony of Sonic being all about friendship but his friends are basically useless in 06, while Shadow is supposed to be the loner, but has the most supportive group.

In any case...Frontiers sure is getting a lot of pre-release DLC isn't it.

I'm glad people enjoy something about '06. I just can't. The best thing it did for me was introduce Silver. Even then, he didn't fully become the character I enjoy until the comics picked him up.

Factually wrong based on how fans behave on social media or dedicated forums/threads or both all around?? Because there's a very clear difference between communities like Sonic Stadium and Retro compared to Reddit and Twitter.

Maybe. It's mostly based on observation, as i'm sure thats not the case with many.
As a friend said, "Dragón Ball fans hate Goku". Maybe the same applies here too.
Besides, the point of the comment was to point out the irony that the Best Sonic stories don't have the supporting cast.

It's pointless as a statement and there is honestly no such thing as a "fake fan."
People get into series for tons of reasons, and regardless of what they are, that doesn't make them any less of a fan.
If you need to throw fans under a bus to make a statement, it wasn't really worth pointing out in the first place.

I don't think that's what Tomodachi is touching upon. Not that Sonic fans aren't fans of the franchise but aren't fans of Sonic as the sole character. There are subsets of fans who honestly do make it their identity to be attached to certain Sonic characters such as Amy Rose and you already know the case with shippers.
Then again my take is that they're bigger Anime fans than they are Sonic fans, but I'm not trying to imply any sort of "fake" fandom just because some fans prefer "Shonen Sonic" over "western Sonic". It's just some fans really do channel that divide through Twitter and Reddit discourse.
Sonic is Sonic at the end of the day.

It was kind of hard to tell, since you used vague wording. Though that said, it still felt like throwing people under the bus and it's more or less talking poorly of fans from other sites. So it'll just cause turmoil. Let's just move on, mayhaps?
The thing is it was never just the fact that 06 was a bad game, but the perception that Sonic had been getting worse since at least Heroes. 06 was meant to be a return to form with an ambitious new direction on cutting edge hardware and instead, it was at best a mediocre and unfinished mess that was debatably the worst game yet. That was why the game being underwhelming and janky was such a huge deal and why the reputation ballooned to become what it is today.
