Could be worse. You could be trying to defend, say, Nickelback. (Disclaimer: I have nothing against Nickelback myself.)

Nickelback I used to be okay with listening to, years ago. I've kinda lost the ability to listen to 'em without hearing another third-rate Creed clone (who were a second rate Pearl Jam clone). I dunno...

Like I said, the only reason I mentioned U2 is cause other people seem to dislike 'em, here and elsewhere. But no, I wouldn't say I feel guilty about liking them. I don't feel guilty about liking much, except maybe 90s Pop music... tongue

The only Nickelback song I have in my library is "This Afternoon". I think that one is a genuinely solid, feel-good country-rock song. I'm actually surprised they didn't try to send it to country, although the video apparently aired on Great American Country.

Another guilty pleasure of mine — from what little output I've heard, I can't hate on boy bands that much. Not even One Direction. Most of them are just good-natured young guys who harmonize well, and there's nothing wrong with that. I like harmonies. Even if, in the case of some of 1D's earlier songs, the lyrics are a bit questionable… (One exception is Hot Chelle Rae, who absolutely sucked.)

The average boy band are good singers, that much is basically true. I'll listen to some of the older ones for nostalgia value occasionally. tongue However, I don't really take 'em seriously as artists. After all, most don't write their own songs or have any real involvement in their backing music.

Boy Band pop isn't something particularly deep or meaningful to me, but it's still fun sometimes.

"My First Kiss" (3OH!3). I can't really disagree with Todd In The Shadows' assessment of the song, but I'm willing to roll with it. It's fun.

Todd is right pretty often, though there are exceptions. tongue

3oh!3 were so much fun when I first heard them and their novelty value hadn't diminished.

Oh god, that High Voltage song is one hell of Guilty Pleasure song.

How is that a burning Taco Bell's building relevant with Hell's Gate? Why's his crotch flicking and bigger than a bowling? What's with all those creepy painting?

And i love every second of it.

Everything the Electric Six ever did is awesome, IMNSHO. tongue "Gay Bar" and "High Voltage" being the obvious ones to point out. But I mean, they have an album called I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master. How could they NOT be awesome?... grin

Electric Six is a solid, underrated band. Absolutely nothing guilty about liking them.

[up] If that song's lyrics are ironic or intended as commentary, then it is actually not bad, from a lyrical perspective at least... tongue

[up]Eh.. It's an a awfully cliche-ridden song.

There are a lot of other songs that criticized the rock'n'roll life style with more wit and talent.

"Not bad" isn't quite the same as good. wink It's better than most of Nickelback's oeuvre. Which ain't saying much... tongue

I don't disagree. That song's merely more tolerable than most Nickelback songs. That is, assuming it's not completely sincere. In which case, it's terrible...

[up][up]I'm certain it's ironic, but Nickelback is not really the kinda band that should be preaching about artistic integrity.

[up]They have none. I get that. Preaching to the converted, here. tongue Hell, as I've said before: they're a third-rate Creed ripoff, and Creed were a second-rate Pearl Jam ripoff. The fact that they're a ripoff of a ripoff says it all, to me...

[up][up]Don't think so. Haven't really listened to anything of theirs (at least, not intentionally) in ages... wink

I thought Next Contestant was a half decent Nickelback song, with its pretty badass riff... then I heard the lyrics which are essentially Chad throwing a strop because other nasty boys keep trying it on with his girlfriend... "Never mind", I thought.
