In this weeks episode of Macross Delta Mikumo status is no longer mysterious. Wright's alliance status is no longer in question. Belger's who's side is he on status is up in the air. Who Lady M is status is pretty much solved. And will Freya live till the end status is in question.

Anyone notice that weird one-frame title card at the very end? Was that just an in-joke from the subbers?

Yeah, the subbers have been putting those up for a while.

So the merchant guy has been spending most of the series slitting his own throat?

Could be that he thought it would be a good investment then realized partway through what Windermere was really up to and decided to cut his losses and run.

Oh hai NUNS fleet... bye, NUNS fleet. Guess we don't have to worry about you turning the sector into dimensional origami after all.

I know NUNS has always been kind of trigger-happy in these series (to quote Nekki Basara: "Reaction weapons, reaction weapons! Why is our answer to everything reaction weapons!?"), but in this one case I can kind of see why they would deploy them. When the entire galaxy is at risk of losing their minds in an instant, sacrificing one star cluster becomes a tenable option.

It amazes me that Heinz and the rest can talk about "freedom" with a straight face considering their entire strategy is enslavement via mind control and suppression of free will. Does no one on the whole of Windermere see the hypocrisy?

The Megaroad-01 was mentioned. Macross is finally picking up that plot thread! Will we finally find out just what happened to them? On Lady M's identity... everyone seems certain it's Minmay, but... how Lady M operates doesn't seem to fit Minmay's character. I'd put my money on Misa, actually.

Final battle hype, activate!

I'm not sure if the show can be wrapped up with most of the plot holes answered...

[up] I'm hoping for a second series.

Unless there's an announcement, I'm not holding my breath. Fan fiction will probably try to rectify this.

Maximum cheese. ReiMaki also using the power of love was nice, though

Mirage remains pointless to the end

Lot of subplots remain unresolved. Shooting for an OVA?

In the end, the show is watchable but underwhelming. Still think it's a victim of a late retool

So... before I dive back into this now that its concluded I just want to know if Freyja kicks the bucket at the end? Cause if this is going to be another TTGL like ending I'm out.

To answer your question: Freyja lives, although it's implied her lifespan's going to take a hit from this.

Overall: good finale, I just wish that they'd done a better job with the earlier parts of the series. The pacing was generally pretty iffy and the characters were largely underdeveloped, but the action was good. Plus they actually made me get onboard with the second OP, so props for that.

[up] Thanks. I just didn't want to see a repeat of TTGL's ending which still chaffs my ass to this day.

In the end, the show is watchable but underwhelming.

Sums up my feelings. It wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't particularly good either.

I mean, Frontier was always going to be a Tough Act to Follow, but even considering that, Delta just didn't wrap things up well. There are so many questions left unanswered, and that is not okay! Hell, the entire impetus for the Windermerean's war is still unresolved!

Dammit, Kawamori, when you inevitably make companion movies for this series, you had better pick up some of those plot threads!

Plus, I really didn't like the way the heroes failed at everything until the very end. Did they have even one real victory across the series against Windermere up to this point?

Well, personally, I love stories like Frontier's, so probably a little biased in that regard.

Although I also think the action sequences were better in Frontier.

Frontier was better than Plus, and both were a helluva lot better than Zero, but SDF Classic and Dynamite 7 are still the top two IMHO.

[up][up]I can understand that. I also love stories like Frontier's. I also love stories like the original Macross. In fact, they're the same kind of story when you get down to it. Even some of the characters are pretty darn similar or at least have similar functions. (The idols, the smart guy/best friend with glasses, the mentor that dies almost dies, etc.) There are some differences, sure, but it's not enough to really separate the two. The only major thing Frontier adds are sterotypical anime hijinks; the bit with the underwear in particular just made me close my eyes and crease my forehead out of bemusement.

The point is it, the original Macross not only did everything Frontier does first, but it does it better, which is a pretty amazing thing for a 30+ year old show. (Except for maybe the action scenes, but... 1.It's 30+ years old, give it some slack, and 2.The overall story's always more important to me than just some action scenes.) And it leaves the sterotypical anime hijinks out of the equation, though I guess a lot of them hadn't even been invented yet. (And thank God for that.) Don't get me wrong; I like Frontier well enough, but it pales in comparison to the original Macross.

I agree, Frontier was kind of a retread of the original Macross.

Not that that's a bad thing, I feel it pulled it off really well. The only thing I really disliked about it (other than that stupid underwear scene) was that it gave the Zentraedi pointy ears, which I felt was unnecessary.

Another thing I don't like about Delta was all the alien societies it introduced as well. Ragnans, Voldorians, and Windermereans, all living within the same small-ish region of space, implying that similar population density is out there among the galaxy, which would mean there are thousands of these Protoculture races out there.

I'd always liked the fact that the Macross franchise had relatively few distinct civilizations (humans, Zentraedi, Zolans, Vajra, and maybe the Protodeviln if you want to count them). That just got thrown out the window in favor of silly stuff like cat-people (Why?) and fish-people.

Just a little thing that bugged me.

[up]I've actually been wondering if maybe this sector of space is a Protoculture testing grounds of sorts. Maybe some Protoculture in the region got bored and decided to start messing around with DNA to see what they could create?

It doesn't particularly bother me though—it's a big galaxy, it makes sense that there'd be so much more life out there than appeared in the original series.

Seems like Delta is not done well, especially near the end of the show.

I keep hearing whispers of conflicts between Kawamori and the producers, does anyone have some confirmation on that?

It might explain why they somehow ran out of time to wrap up the story.
