First off, this is a fairly decent article with both its wicks and inbounds in the mid hundreds.

But ... exactly how is the name indicative of the trope? Is this a pre-existing term? Where is the Trope Namer? I'm not locating anything on Google to tell me where this name comes from or what it means.

Extreme admiration for someone can be called "putting them on a pedestal." A broken pedestal, then, would be the trope.

I just wanted to say that as a non-native speaker, I didn't hear that saying before, but I still figured the intention out from the concepts associated with a pedestal. A pedestal is something that holds great things. I the pedestal is broken, the supposedly great thing is no longer supported, it will fall.
