Because it's set on a parallel Earth which is similar our own Earth, but is set in an alternate historical timeline? There are a few anime like that.

...But if you want to look at it that way, everything is an alternate timeline. And Earth is Earth, parallel or not. (Sorry, not thinking straight right now. Will compose my thoughts later on... or maybe not.)
