To clarify my first question - Are there other anime series linked to this one? These don't necessarily have to be in direct relation or continuity (Eg. All UC and AU Gundam series would fall under the same heading of the Gundam franchise).

I had started reading the manga, so the episodes that were coming out were old hat. But on the other hand, I eventually lost interest in the manga sometime around when they first started competing to be ... S Class? Was that what it's called? Ahh well.

That's a shame that you lost interest, because I've for the most part enjoyed that arc a lot.
