We're Vigilante Taxonomists, right? So, why don't we live up to our name and devise a taxonomy for media analogous to the one used for living things?

Here are a few proposed divisions

Media is divided into analogues of Domains by what's needed to represent it.

  • Pure Information (covers the vast majority of media, can be stored in a computer)
  • Permanent Physical (sculpture, architecture, etc)
  • Transitive Physical (performances not intended to be recorded, or purely physical constructs which are only temporary)

The Pure Information "domain" is divided up into five Kingdom analogues based on how it's stored in a computer:

  • Video (TV, Film, Animation, etc)
  • Audio (Radio, Music, etc)
  • Image (Comics, Art, etc)
  • Text (Literature, web pages, source code, etc)
  • Software (self explanatory)

This is as far as I've managed to get so far, but the idea is that once you reach the Species level, you're dealing with a specific work.

Accidental mistakes are forgivable, intentional ones are not.
